Barrie Matthews, a Torquay team-mate in the 1960s and a future Devon captain then, remembers Cole with affection.

“I first met Derek as a young cricketer playing in Torquay fixtures at Dartmouth Naval College,” recalled Matthews.

“He was an immense man and a formidable opponent.

“In my county days he had retired before I started playing, but his career statistics speak for themselves.

“As Devon's chairman Derek was very supportive when I became captain, always available to help with any problems and was a great guide for me in my early days.”
