DEVON
were on the end of a five-wicket revenge beating by the Warwickshire
Invitation XI in their final warm-up game before today's C&G
Trophy tie with Essex at Exmouth.
Warwickshire were thrashed by
145 runs at Bicton College on Sunday after Devon dismissed
them for a paltry 38 in reply to their own total of 183 for
seven.
The boot was on the other foot yesterday when Richard Swann,
one of seven Warwickshire batsmen dismissed for nought in
the first game, led the run chase with 79.
When he went Robert Williams,
another duck club member from the previous day, saw Warwickshire
through to the end with an undefeated 38 as they won with
an over to spare.
Devon's total of 244 for nine in 50 overs was underpinned
by a stand of 17 for the fifth wicket between Exmouth's David
Court (64) and Paignton's Neil Hancock (59).
They came together on 77 for four after skipper Bob Dawson
(30) had seen off the new ball.
Warwickshire must have wondered of they were in for another
pasting after Hancock knocked back opener David Hawkes' middle
stump in the first over.
But Swann, backed up by Fran Klopper (29) and Jason Young
(32) broke the back of the chase in stands of 93 and 54, leaving
it to Williams and Neeraz Prahbu (33) to wrap things up.
Devon 233-9 (N Hancock 59, D Court 64, R Dawson 30; U Awan
4-38), Warwickshire 234-5 (R Swann 79, R Williams 38no; D
Court 2-22).
