PAIGNTON Panthers completed a hat-trick of wins in the Meek Mortgages Torbay Twenty20 Cup when they defeated Torquay Titans by 22 runs in last night's final at Barton.
Twice before Torquay have tackled Paignton in the final and twice before Paignton have come out on top.
Last night's match was no exception to the previous two with South African Riaan Jeggels top scoring on 50 not out in a Paignton total of 133 for six, then taking two for 21 with the ball to help keep Torquay to 111 for eight in reply.
Torquay left-armer Jon Baglow (2-30) struck twice early on as Paignton struggled to 12 for two. Surviving opener Seb Benton was joined by Jeggels (pictured) at that point and their stand of 51 changed the game.
When Benton fell for 36 off 34 balls, Jeggels found a new running mate in Tim Ward, who hit a quickfire 23 as Paignton accelerated to 124 for four. Jeggels batted through to the end and only faced 42 balls for his unbeaten half-century.
Runs weren't a problem at first for Torquay – they had 56 on the board at the 10-over halfway stage – but losing wickets was as they were four down at the same time.
Although Hudson battled way for 29, the best of the rest were Ed Yeo (15), Mickey Wilkinson (14) and Matt Bulbeck (14) as Paignton got the break on.
Fifty-five to win off the final five overs was too tall an order an Torquay's reply fizzled out.
Jeggels was named man of the match for his batting, bowing and a good catch to dismiss Bulbeck.
