First round

SCOTT Eaves and Alex Newman bailed Brixham out of trouble in their twice-delayed Brockman Cup first round tie against Bovey Tracey.

Chasing Bovey's total of 92 all out in the last of their 20 overs, Brixham were struggling at 61 for six when Newman and Eaves got together.

Simon Newton had posed most of the problems with the ball for Bovey by taking three Brixham wickets for two runs in four overs. The only batsman who hadn't had a problem with Newton was Richard Ward, who hit 30.

Newman (17no) and Eaves (13no) knocked off the rest of the runs to seal victory for Brixham with eight balls to spare.

Earlier, Simon Caunter (4-15) and Lee Upham (3-10) were largely responsible for bowling Bovey Tracey out.

Lewis Hammett (23) and Adam Squire (21) were Bovey's main run sciorers

Brixham will be away to Stokeinteignhead in the second round next Tuesday (June 5).

HOLDERS Stoke Gabriel are out of this season's Brockman Cup after crashing to an eight-wicket defeat against Cockington.

Stoke's total of 99 for eight in 20 overs – Dave Higgins top scoring on 31 – always looked a little on the light side and so it proved.

With Tom Cross hitting and unbeaten 43, and Neil Colegate making 20, Cockington strode to victory with five overs to spare

   Stoke Gabriel 99-8 (D Higgins 31, C Life 16; T Humphrey 3-20), Cockington 100-2 (T Cross 43no, N Colegate 20). Cockington bt Stoke by 8 wkts.

KINGSKERSWELL, cup winners in 2004, got their 2007 campaign off to an impressive start by completing a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Shaldon at the Kerswell Bowl.

Kerswell asked Shaldon to bat first and all their batsman struggled desperately. No one made double figures!

The bowling honours for Kerswell were divided between Pete Douglas (3-6) Mark Kenyon (2-8) and Phil Lacey (2-9) being the stand-out performers.

Shaldon's total of 66 all out never looked likely to be enough and Kingskerswell, despite the early loss of their openers, had Mike Etherington (22no) and Nathan Weedon (26no) to thank for a comfortable victory completed with more than seven of the 20 overs remaining.

Kingskerswell are now due to play Chelston in the quarter-final on May 29.

   Shaldon 66 (P Douglas 3-6, M Kenyon 2-8, P Lacey 2-9), Kingskerswell 68-2   (N Wheedon 26no, M Etherington 22no; C Revell 2-13). Kingskerswell bt Shaldon by 8 wkts.

IPPLEPEN set up a derby clash with Abbotskerswell when they defeated an unimpressive South Devon side by 44 runs at Marsh Road.

The Pens totalled 131 for seven in their 20 overs, the bulk of which came from opener Matt Quartley (39) and Tom Sercombe (48).

After Dave Alsop was trapped on the crease by Dan Ball without scoring, Quartley and Sercombe put on 74 for the second wicket. Quartley finally had his middle stump knocked back by Dave Amery (4-21), but only after hitting four fours and a six from 39 balls faced. Sercombe, who hit six boundaries, was caught behind down the leg side also off Amery.

South Devon needed a positive start – and got nothing like it as they dipped to 35 for five after eight overs with Adam Peters (2-17) and Pete Gamble (3-16) doing the damage.

Ian Shepherd's attempt at middle-order heroics – he bludgeoned 32 off 25 balls – wasn't enough to haul things round as South Devon were bowled out with two overs to go for 86. Jon Norrish made 12 and Adrian Hewings 15.

Pens back-up bowling was impressive with Sercombe taking two for four and Sam DeFriend – definitely one to watch for the future – bagging two for 10 off four tidy overs.

   Ipplepen 131-7 (T Sercombe 48, M Quartley 39; D Amery 4-21), South Devon 84 (I Shepherd 32, J Norrish 17; P Gamble 3-16, A Peters 2-17, S DeFriend 2-10, T Serombe 2-4). Ipplepen bt South Devon by 44 runs.
