TUESDAY, JUNE 6

AUSSIE Brad Wright thumped and unbeaten 81 to help Abbotskerswell to a seven-wicket win over near neighbours Ipplepen in the one outstanding match left in the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup first round.

Pens, who skipper Simon Tapley won the toss and opted to bat first, posted a respectable 145 for seven in their 15 eight-ball overs.

Lee Curtis was top scorer on 38 – he and Luke Tuckett (34) posted 41 for the second wicket   then Keith Bell (18no) and Steve Forsey put up another 41 for the seventh.

Pick of Abbots' bowlers by a distance was wily left-armer Ronnie Owen with three for 17 from his four overs.

Wright was Abbots' anchorman all the way through and with back-up from Marcus Green (21no) and Gary Caunter (15) had the runs knocked off two balls into the last over.

Waiting for Abbots in the quarter-finals on June 14 are Totnes & Dartington.

   Ipplepen 145-7 (L Curtis 38, L Tuckett 34, K Bell 18no; R Owen 3-17, J Aggett 1-26), Abbotskerswell 146-3 (B Wright 81no, M Green 21no, G Caunter 15; L Curtis 1-27, S DeFriend 1-33). Abbotskerwell bt Ipplepen by 7 wtks.

DARTINGTON & Totnes comfortably disposed of Lustleigh on their way to the second round of the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup.

Scott Stevenson top scored with 48 for D&T as they posted 103 for nine in their 15 eight-ball overs.

Lustleigh were never allowed to get going in reply – Tom Williamson and Bertus Loots made sure of that with four miserly overs each at the start – and despite some late swinging from Steve Wright they could only muster 72 for four.

Scott Stevenson and Matt Hickey (18) shared in a stand of 60 for Totnes that helped them towards their total. Ben Hood (4-24) was the most effective of the Lustleigh bowlers, just shading Gerard Starling (3-20).

Nigel Sawrey-Cookson made a patient 24 at the top of the Lustleigh innings, but Loots (1-18) and Willimson (1-8) soon had the visitors behind the clock.

Wright clubbed Hickey around at the end, but it was way too late to influence the outcome.

Totnes will be at home to either Ipplepen or Abbotskerswell in the second round. That game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

   Dartington & Totnes 103-9 (S Stevenson 49, M Hickey 18; B Hood 4-24, G Starling 3-20), Lustleigh 72-4 (S Wright 29no, N Sawrey-Cookson 24). Dartington & Totnes bt Lustleigh by 31 runs.

IT'S 12 years since Cockington last won an Aaron Printers Narracott Cup game and they ended their long wait for another one in some style with a 46-run win over Torquay 2nd XI in a high-scoring encounter.

Cockington's Shaun Needham was clearly out to make a point against his ex-club as he thumped 78 towards a total of 183 for five – good going by anyone's standards in 15 eight-ball overs.

Peter Needham made 32 and Scott Colegate 25.

Torquay replied with 137 for six, Jonathan Rice making a best of 48 not out. Matt Thompson chipped in with 28.

Cockington will be at home to Stoke Gabriel in the second round. Stoke beat Kingskerswell by six wickets in the other outstanding tie.

   Cockington 183-5 (S Needham 78, P Needham 32, S Colegate 25; W Bennett 2-17), Torquay II 137 for 6 (J Rice 48, M Thompson 28; S Colegate 3-29, D Scott 2-25). Cockington bt Torquay by 46 runs.

STOKE Gabriel made light work of Kingskerswell on their way to a five-wicket win and a place in the last eight.

Kerswell's innings was never really allowed to get going – Nick Sandbrook (2-10), Sean Dwyer (2-21) and Dave Pruysers (1-19) made sure of that – and in 15 eight-ball overs they could only muster 82 for six.

Richard Hancox (19) and Mark Etherington (17) put on 41 for the third wicket, but no one else made a double-figure score.

Stoke opener Steve Tolley (25) anchored the chase and with and Chris Samargis (17) got the reply up to 56 for one. Neil Robinson (17no) and Rob Baker (13) finished the job with more than three overs to spare.

  Kingskerswell 82-6 (R Hancox 19, M Etherington 17; N Sandbrook 3-10, D Dwyer 2-21), Stoke Gabriel 87-5 ( Tolley 25, C Samargis 17, N Robinson 17no, R Baker 13; P Lacey 2-27). Stoke bt Kerswell by 6 wkts.

BOVEY Tracey have the chance to avenge last year's defeat in the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup final after beating Barton II in a tense affair at Cricketfield Road.

Waiting for Bovey in the second round on June 7 are holders Paignton, who are already through after their win over Babbacombe earlier in the week.

Bovey looked set for a huge score after racing to 63 without loss as Peter Bradley (24) and Matthew Makepiece, who made 40 off 21 balls, put bat to ball.

Veteran Mike Lievesley (4-13) halted the charge and with Luke Adderley (2-30) and Tom Porter (2-36) chipping in, Bovey were bowled out for 129 in the last of their 15 eight-ball overs.

Barton shot off in reply to 92 for three – Tom Whittle (53) and Andy McVeigh (44) putting on 74 – then started to fall behind the run rate.

Barton reached the last over from Bovey's Charlie Carter needing 15 to win with seven wickets in hand and couldn't quite to it and finished five runs short of victory on 125 for five.

South Devon proved too strong for Chelston at Marsh Road as they ran out comfortable winners by 35 runs.

Dave Stubbs (23) and Matt Blackmore (26) gave South Devon a 50-run start for the first wicket, then skipper James Blood (28) and Phil Blackmore (23no) added 53 more towards a total of 124 for four. Phil Hunt (2-21) was the pick of the Chelston bowlers.

Phil Blackmore then claimed four for 12 as Chelston were restricted to 89 for eight in reply. Vivek Kulkarni top scored for Chelston with 16 – six of which came in one huge hit off Mike Smith.

South Devon will be at home to Brixham in the second round, which is also on June 7.

PAIGNTON overwhelmed Babbacombe by 64 runs in their re-arranged Aaron Printers Narracott Cup tie after piling up a whopping 142 all out in their 15 eight-ball overs.

A 50-plus partnership at the top of the order between skipper Neil Edmonds (26) and Mark Smith (20) set the tone of the Paignton innings. Eddie Church (26) and Martin Swanell ensured that the scoreboard continued to tick over.

Richard Farkins had one eight-ball over he will want to forget when he was smashed for 29.

Babbacombe found they were batting in the gathering gloom and pretty soon the chase was abandoned. Tim Goodwin made 27not out in a total of 78 for two.

Edmonds, Smith and Liam Bryan, whose for overs only cost 13 runs, all bowled well for Paignton.

   Paignton 142 (N Edmonds 26, M Smith 20, E Church 26, M Swanell 23; A Oscroft 2-37, T Goodwin 2-31, P Bates 3-20), Babbacombe 78-2 (T Goodwin 27no, R Redding 20). Paignton bt Babbacombe by 64 runs.
