The Derriford centre cup winners, Mayfair Sapphires, are the 2009 Devon Indoor champions. They disposed of two premier league clubs, Sidmouth and Bovey Tracey, on their way to the title. Heathcoat's withdrawal at the eleventh hour did not give the organisers an opportunity of finding a replacement club so newly promoted Bovey Tracey were given a bye into the final. It was a low scoring afternoon at Derriford with the highest score of the day the 68 with which the Plymouth based club won the competition. In the first game the 2008 champions, Sidmouth, were always on the back foot as they lost the important wicket of Anthony Griffiths in the first over and were restricted to a below par 60 all out in 11.2 overs. Mayfair had put on perhaps the finest fielding performance witnessed in the finals with a simply staggering catch by Dominic Wood to remove powerhouse Matt Cooke the pick. Wood had also held Griffiths. The home side dismissed the remaining four batsmen by run outs. Top scorer was extras with 19, followed by Miles Dalton on 12 and 10 apiece from Cook and Mark Jasper. Mayfair got home with four wickets in hand with twenty balls to spare. Again extras played an important part providing 21 runs, Paul Woodward scored 14 and the captain Seb Jordan saw his side home with an undefeated 17.
Not surprisingly Mayfair's fielding was not quite of the same quality in the final with the Bovey batsmen given several lives. Batting first Bovey's Peter Bradley and Nick Seager both retired on 25 as a large total looked on the cards, however the other four batsmen only contributed an additional six runs which was also the total of extras. Bradley returned to be run out for 26 and Seager scored three more to reach 29 before he became another victim of the Wood / Jordan combination.

Much to Bovey's fighting spirit the result of the game was still uncertain right up until the final over when the rule book was being checked to see what would happen if the result were a tie. Chris Bradley 2-11, G.Bougourd, whose first over went for 15, recovered well to take 2-24 and spinner Tim Millington 0-18 helped pile on the pressure. In fact opener Mark Woodward, who had batted through for an undefeated 31, got his side home off the final ball of a nail biting final. Extras were the second highest contributor with 18 and as in the first innings apart from 11 from brother Paul Woodward there were no other major contributions in the final product of 68.
The Derriford centre were outstanding hosts giving up four hours of their valuable playing time and it was a bitter disappointment that the first hour was not utilised. Umpires Danny Daniels and Paul Dawe officiated in a quiet and efficient manner. Mayfair now play Somerset champions Bridgewater, again at Derriford, on Sunday 22nd February starting at 3.00pm |
