Crunch looms for Chudleigh

CHUDLEIGH have two games coming up which are going to make or break their season after they slumped to an eight-wicket defeat at Paignton.

The A Division’s bottom side went into the game full of confidence after beating Barton by the same margin last time out.

The boot was on the other foot this time though as Chudleigh were limited to 181 for nine, which Paignton chugged past inside 28 overs.

Chudleigh can still play their way to safety in the last five games by getting past Lewdown and Abbotskerswell.

Their next two matches are Abbotskerswell at home then Lewdown away, both of which they have to win.

“From our best performance of the season to our worst,” said Chudleigh captain Ed Foreman.

“We need to show a lot more desire and application to achieve our goals this year.

“Paignton are a very good side but we made that win very easy for them.”

Foreman top scored with 48 for Chudleigh before falling at 61 for two.

Matt Heather (37) and Sachintha Galhenage (23) kept the board clicking round and at 137 for three with 15 to go Chudleigh held a strong position.

Then wickets started to fall to Zubyar Hamza (4-21) and Chudleigh slowed.

Dan Britcliffe scored 28, but tail-ender Dan Le Marquand was the only other batter to reach double figures before the overs ran out.

Paignton didn’t mess about knocking off the runs, or at least Hamza didn’t!

The South African slammed 132 not out off 79 balls with 17 fours and six sixes – that’s 104 in boundaries – as Chudleigh’s bowlers were put to the sword.

Faisal Khaliq and Galhenge accepted, no one went for less than eight an over.

Richard Ashworth made 21 – he and Hamza put on  85 for the first wicket – Peter Taylor chipped in 13 and skipper Connor Bryan was not out 14 when the winning post was passed.
