Green included in England EDP squad for Oz tour

DEVON youth graduate Ben Green has been named in the 18-man England Development Programme working towards a tour of Australia next Spring, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Green, who was 17 at the end of last month, was part of the England U16 Development Programme last year.

Somerset took an interest in Green during 2013 through his performances for Devon and the West & Wales U15s at the Bunbury Festival, where he won the tournament’s all-rounder award.

Green spent last winter working on his game at the Somerset Academy, work which paid off in 2014.

He played for the full Devon side in the Minor Counties Championship and the Unicorns KO Cup, appeared for Somerset 2nd XI and capped the season by turning out for England U17s against Pakistan.

Green (pictured) also found time to turn out in the Devon League Premier Division for Exeter, scoring 321 runs, including a century against Exmouth, and taking 15 wickets.

And there were two appearances for Devon in the U17 side, including a five-wicket haul against Wales at Sidmouth.

Green started out in the Devon U10s with Ted Ashman and has worked his way through the age groups on his way to England selection. The Exeter School pupil has been Devon's youth player of the year for the past two years.

The 18-man EDP squad features players from across the Under-17 and Under-19 age groups, and represents the first intake of players to be overseen by ECB’s new head of the England Development Programme, Andy Hurry.

The 2014-2015 EDP squad will take part in a series of short training camps at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough, before embarking on an overseas development camp to the subcontinent in December.

The tour to Australia is in March-April, ahead of the start of the English season.

David Graveney, the England Development Programme chairman of selectors, said: “The composition of the 2014-2015 EDP squad represents a change in direction for the England Development Programme with the Under-19 and Under-17 age groups fully combined for the first time.

“This move has created one smaller squad of players for Andy Hurry and the rest of the coaching staff at the NCPC to work with more closely, and simultaneously gives the county academies greater ownership in developing their young players moving forwards.

“We believe we have selected an outstanding 18-man EDP squad, and I am especially excited by the wealth of young talent currently coming through the development pathway.

“This group of players will now get the opportunity to take part in a training camp on the sub-continent before Christmas, followed by a challenging tour to Australia in March-April next year, providing two fantastic learning experiences of playing in contrasting conditions and environments.”
