DEVON umpires Andy Forward and Steve Lavis passed the final part of their level three qualification with flying colours.

Forward, Lavis and Cornish official Tim Boston, had all attended the ECB ACO level three course, designed to assist umpires prepare and prosper in multi-day cricket and, in particular, in MCCA and D List cricket matches.

The officials, having completed four modules of classroom-based learning, had to produce a technical report on a cricket-related matter.

Once complete, the participants have to present their reports in front of fellow officials and ECB umpiring education manager Nick Cousins at a meeting hosted at the Dolphin Hotel in Bovey Tracey.

Forward gave an insight into dealing with fast, short-pitched bowling.

Lavis followed with his report on assisting, as a mentor, a colleague over a two-year period.

Boston completed the trilogy by dealing with managing match situations.

“The topics were presented in three different ways by three brave men, each of whom responded happily to probing by Cousins and questions from the audience,” said DACO secretary Paul Dart.

“Everyone learned something useful to take forward. Over time, the ECB ACO hope to develop a reference library of these reports.”

Cousins explained the process, provided courteous, helpful and challenging feed back to each participant and explained why, in his opinion each participant had passed and merited the award of level three status.

“This was a challenging evening for the three participants, whose mettle was tested in front of colleagues,” said Dart.

‘That everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening is a testament to the three, who thoroughly earned their level three certification.”
