Craig Overton out for up to 10 weeks following ankle op

CRAIG Overton had surgery on his ankle this week in a bid to ensure he will be pain free for the 2015 season.

The 20-year-old Somerset and North Devon CC all-rounder suffered a recurrence of a long-standing ankle problem whilst on duty with the England Lions recently

The as Somerset physiotherapist Jamie Thorpe explained why the decision was made for him to go under the knife.

‘We always try to manage these things without an operation for as long as we can, but it was evident in Craig’s case that he needed surgery,’ said Thorpe.

‘They’ve removed a piece of bone that was sitting at the back of his ankle which was pinching when his foot was pointed.

‘We are confident this will settle everything down in time for the season and allow him to bowl pain free.’

Overton (pictured) is hopeful that this will put an end to the problem and is keen to get back in to action as soon as he can.

‘No one likes to be injured but the operation went well and hopefully it will all be sorted out in time for the summer,’ he said.

‘I think I’ll be out for around eight to ten weeks, so if it all goes to plan I could be ready for the first game of the season and if not then definitely the second match.’

Whilst the operation appears to have been a success, Thorpe said the club won’t be rushing Overton back in to action.

“Although it is a fairly routine operation, it still puts a lot of stress on the ankle where the surgeon has to go in,’ he said.

‘We need to protect the area for a couple of weeks and then his ankle will have to get used to accepting load again.

‘Daz (Darren Veness, Somerset CCC strength and conditioning coach) will also have to work his magic on him to get him strong again.

‘So as you can see, it’s not just about the injury itself, it’s a combination of things that need to be addressed.’
