South African pacer merchant heading for Brixham

BRIXHAM have signed South African quick bowler Matt McGillivray to spearhead their A Division campaign this season,

The Boundary Park outfit had hoped to challenge for promotion last term, but finished below halfway and were never among the contenders.

Wickets were hard to come by – Jacob Gregory (29) and Mark Orchard (25) had most of them – and that;s something  captain Andy Pugh will hope McGillivray can rectify.

McGillivray (24) is a First Class regular for Gauteng – 70 wickets in 22 games – and can bat a bit too.

When he played for Doridge in the Birmingham League in 2012 he took 31 wickets at 17.38 each and had a batting average of 46.

McGillivray has turned out for Lions franchise in South African 50-over cricket this winter.

Aussie Stuart Edgar is coming over from Brisbane to play for the season.

He is a First Grader with Ipswich/Logan CC who bats and bowls off-spin.

From closer to home Brixham have snaffled Joel Ashworth away from Paignton.

Ashworth is a keeper batter whom Brixham expect to make a big impact this season.

Josh Hunt, an early order batsman, has switched from Premier side Torquay.

“He is going to fit nicely into the first team at the top of the order and strengthen an area that we were badly lacking in last year,’ said Pugh.

Brixham 2nd XI were promoted last season and Pugh has his eye on a clutch of players ready to step up into the 1st XI.

All-rounder Rhys Dallow, spinner Matt Parsons and opening bat Tom Hopper will all get chances to press a claim.
