Paceman Popham on way to North Devon

FAST bowler Jack Popham has reluctantly left Barnstaple & Pilton for North Devon as his career continues to blossom,

The 20-year-old paceman enjoyed a breakthrough season for Devon in Minor Counties cricket last season, taking 20 wickets at 11.7runs each in four outings. He topped the bowling averages for Devon and was in the top 10 nationally.

Popham has been training with First Class county Gloucestershire for some time and appeared for them in the Second Eleven Trophy last season.

Popham said he had a lot to be grateful to Barnstaple & Pilton for, but in the interests of his career now is the time to step up to a better level of club cricket.

“It was a tough decision to make as I have been with Barnstaple & Pilton from the age of six,” said Popham.

“Barnstaple & Pilton is a great club and they have been tremendous to me.

“I have been training in the main academy at Gloucestershire – last year I was in the sub academy – and feel now is the time to move to a Premier team.

“North Devon was the obvious place to go, and not just because it is on the doorstep.

“I like the way they are going about  things, trying to build a strong side of players from north Devon.

“It also helps I know Barney Huxtable (captain) and Max Curtis quite well from playing with them for Devon last season.

“Other clubs were interested, but North Devon is definitely the right choice.”

Popham bowled six overs for Devon in the win over Exeter University on Sunday before taking a breather because of a back strain.

He is included in the side to face Somerset 2nd XI at Heathcoat this Sunday.

Popham’s aim this summer is to continue the improvements he made in 2014 – and play as much cricket as he can.

“My holiday is pretty well used up already for cricket,” said the trainee designer.

“There are Devon games, games for GloucestershireAcademy and , hopefully, games in the 2nd XI for Gloucestershire.

“My boss is absolutely fantastic about it. He knows I want to be a professional cricketer if I can and is doing everything he can to help me.”
