Wolf slams record score in Brockman Cup

DAN Wolf smashed his way into the record books with an unbeaten 144 for Paignton 3rd XI in their 80-run Brockman Cup win at South Devon.

Wolf – he’s playing for Devon Lions against the Worcester Academy on Sunday – showed South Devon’s youthful bowlers scant respect on his way to the highest score ever made in the 83-year history of the competition.

He hit 15 fours and six sixes in a devastating display of big hitting.

Along the way there were stands of 52 with Noah Wright – he made 16 – and 132 with Tom Blundell (18).

Harry Ward, in at the end with Wolf, was run-out for 18.

South Devon’s six-strong bowling attack contained four players from the U17 side, who battled gamely to keep Wolf and Blundell in check.

Sometimes it didn’t go well – Joe Kitto’s first over was thumped for 26 – but Cameron Fogden, Jimmy Allen and Jonty Tupman all bowled overs that went for four or under.

South Devon replied with 127 for six, which on almost any other evening would have been a respectable total.

Openers Ryan Maunder (32) and Ian Shepherd (29) put on 60 for the first wicket.

Three wickets fell for nine runs added, and after that the game meandered to a close.

Neil Matthews scored 16 of his 17 in boundaries and Fogden got 16 quickly before the overs ran out.

Ward with three for 30 off four overs was the most successful Paignton bowler.

Wolf is the sixth batsman in the cup’s 83-year history to make a hundred – and his is the best of them all.

Previous centurions in order are Ray Haydock (101), Dave Smith (102), Chris Sleep (138), Ben Robinson (100) and Toby Codd (105).
