Corns on way back to top flight

GOING up! Cornwood are on their way back to the Premier Division after a 12-month absence after clinching promotion with a 62-run win over Bradninch.

But the job’s not finished yet as Cornwood can still go up as champions if they beat long-time leaders Brixham this Saturday in the final game of the season.

Both sides have 14 wins in 17 starts so far and with just five points between them it really is a winner-takes-all situation.

Cornwood hit 217 for nine against Bradninch in a rain-reduced 46-over tame – Jackson Thompson top scoring against his former club with 60.

Thompson and Ben Warren (38) put on 87 for the first wicket, but there was a lull in proceedings for a while as veteran seamer Paul Nott (4-34) slowed up the Corns.

Jason Hall anchored the bottom half of the order with a steady 21 after going in at 132 for five.

Hall was ninth out at 214 having put in 24 with Matt Butterworth (14) and a crucial 44 with Craig James (21no).

Not was the pick of the bowlers, although Charlie Walker (1-36) and Lawrence Greenway (1-20) were both hard to get away.

Bradninch were all out for 112 in reply having never got out of third geat on the chase.

Opener Ross Acton made 56 of 85 balls, but other than a stand of 27 with Tim Piper for the third wicket lacked support.

Cornwood had the game won in the time it took Bradninch to slip from 46 for two to 77 for six.

When Acton was ninth out at 106 – one of three wickets cleared up by Elliot Staddon at the end – the game was over.

Ada Goodliffe (3-25) and Matt Skeemer (2-22) did the early damage for Cornwood.

Opener Warren said promotion had been the undisguised aim this season so it was mission accomplished.

“We really wanted to go straight back up after relegation last season as we felt we didn’t do ourselves justice at times,” said Warren.

“Other than the two games we lost – Hatherleigh and Tavistock – we have been pretty consistent all season.

“One of the reasons we have done so well is having a deeper player pool to work from.

“Last season we had seven or eight players capable of doing a job in the first team – this year it has been 13 or 14.

“Another good thing is different players have won games for, right through the team from one to 11. We haven’t been relying on a couple of players to do it all for us.”
