Blundell's named in Cricketer Top 100

BLUNDELL’S School have been recognised for their passion for cricket by being named one of the top 100 schools in the country for the sport.

The independent school on the outskirts of Tiverton takes its cricket seriously with former Somerset and England A keeper-batsman Rob Turner the man in charge.

Cricket is played across the school – boys and girls – from U18 1st XI down to U12 level.

The school has 12 grass nets, six squares and two indoor nets. County sides of all age groups, up to Devon CCC, use the main ground at Blundell’s  for games,

And it is that devotion to the game that has earned Blundell’s a place in the Cricketer magazine’s Playing Fields of England Top 100 - see right.

Turner, who appeared in more than 500 games for Somerset during his professional career, said Blundell’s is proud of its cricket tradition.

Famous old boys include Vic Marks (Somerset & England), Hugh Morris (Glamorgan and England) and Jeremy Lloyds (Somerset and Gloucestershire).

Numerous old Blundellians – Ian Gompertz, Paul Warren, Tom Wight Liam Lewis and Zak Bess to name a handful – have gone on to play Minor County cricket for Devon.

Turner believes a new generation of cricketers is about to break through.

“There were 450 schools nominated for a place in the Cricketer Top 100, so we are proud to make it to the final list,” said Turner.

“Many fine cricketers have gone through the school and I have seen some during my 10 years here.

“Right now we have high hopes for Dan Pyle – Hamsphire have been showing an interest in him – and Millie Attwell.

“I hope it won’t be too long before we see an old Blundellian going to a First Class county again and going on to play for England.

“King’s School and Taunton School have both done it; I would like Blundell’s to emulate them.”

Blundell’s is one of only two schools in Devon to make it into the Cricketer’s top 100.

The other is South Dartmoor Community College, which has enjoyed huge success in the Devon age-group cups in 2015 and achieved national recognition at Girls U15 level as ECB T20 winners and Lady Taverners Indoor runners-up.
