Devon U12s v Cornwall U12s 2014 Report

Sandy:   "...and then you put a dot in this box, Neil.  Don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it".

Neil: " ...and remind me how many runs you got yesterday, Sandy".

Match 3 saw the surprisingly long trip to St Minver, to meet the Auld Enemy. Another toss lost, but the opposition kindly invited Devon to bat.

The message for the day, bat positively and keep the run rate up.  A huge improvement on previous starts, as by the 14th over the score was 69-3 with Freddie Ford leading the way with 30 from 25 balls. Louis Morison continued where he left off, with 41 from 47 balls.  Ollie Hannam got in on the act with 35, and Cap'n Jack, quickly becoming the Joss Buttler of the side, punished the bowling at the end, peppering the short boundary. His 60 from 37 balls included 7 fours and 3 sixes.  The final total of 231-7 looked impressive.

The only frustration for the management  - batters getting in to the 30's and 40's and then getting out.  The big scores will come though.

In reply Ollie Blakeman and Tom Simmons both took early wickets and the spin attack of Sam Read, Ollie Pugsley, Will Oxland and Max Hancock strangled the run rate in the middle of the innings, and the Cornish captain decided to bat the innings out. They eventually finished on 142-4, 89 runs short of their target.

Disappointingly the fielding performance was affected by the lack of intent shown by Cornwall, and the standards dropped to an unacceptable level. There were 47 extras, and that number will become crucial in tighter games.

The team have shown the high levels they can reach and are their own harshest critics.  They accept that their level of performance can and should be higher than it was in the field today.  Perceptive young men!!

Still it can't be bad, when you perform half a game below par and still win by 89 runs!!!
