"Evans Above!"

On a blistering hot day at Bicton, on a track which got easier to bat on, Devon swealtered to their second defeat of the season against Wales due to a magnificent 178 3rd wicket partnership between Evans (120) and Butlin (70NO). Unually Devon won the toss, thanks Adam and deciding to bat soon lost Heather Knight. James Burke (83) and Luke Bess (42) then put on 96 before Bess played at a wide one and was caught at point. Evenden (29) and Burke then put on 64 before Evenden got out and at 160-3 off 38 overs Devon were looking at posting a below parr total. In an endeavour to score faster and with the overs slipping away, 3 more wickets were lost before Justin Williams (35NO) and Tom Cross put on 44 in 5 overs to take Devon to 232-8 off their 50 Overs. Williams showed the others how to take the attack to the opposition by using his feet and hitting straight and together with Cross whose running between the wickets was superb this little cameo partnership gave Devon the initative and a chance. After a splendid tea, thanks parents, and with temperatures in the high 20s Devon lacking the bowling services of Adam Dibble failed to get the early break through until Sam Cload, the pick of Devon's bowlers, came on and bowled Norman.  James Burke then took the first of his 2 wickets but Wales were by now gaining control. Matt Clarke and Luke Bess kept the runs down but even though Devon didn't give up and fielded their hearts out and couldn't be faulted for their efforts, they couldn't get the break through they needed. Evans on completing his chanceless century decided to finish the match on his own but needlessly got himself out but by now Wales were home and dry with 5 overs to spare. Our thanks to Peter Cooke, Sidmouth CC, the Umpires and the parents.
