Devon Under 14s v Cornwall Under 14s                          Sunday 22nd June 2003 Troon CC

Chappell "Crown"s a frustrating day

A frustrating day was "Crown"ed for Devon Under 14's by a fine knock by Gary Chappell and another brilliant one handed catch in the gathering gloom and drizzle this time by Harry McDowell. A solid opening partnership saw Chappell and Joe Smith

put on 41 in 12 overs but when Smith departed the next 10 overs went for 20 runs as Cornwall bowled much straighter and for the second match two Devon players failed to find the gaps or more importantly look for an alternative and take singles. Iain Crombie got Chappell running and then Chappell accelerated the run rate with 5, 4's in quick succession before Will Murray and David Wrench put on 32 in 6 overs. The 4th rain interruption brought the Devon innings to an abrupt end at 142- 4. Scoring at 6+ for the last 10 overs, Devon looked sure to score in excess of 200 off their original 50 overs.

After negotiations in the rain to try and make a match of it, greatly assisted by the willingness of the Umpires, the Cornwall management team and Troon CC, and without the aid of Colin Powell, Cornwall were set 37 overs to get the runs.

Ollie Robinson thundered in and bowled well with pace and bounce, perhaps a tad too short, and Joel Seward swung the ball getting the only wicket due to McDowell's wonderful catch.

With the descending gloom, thunder continually grumbling overhead and Joe Smith's cry "lets get a second wicket whilst we can still see the score board" the Umpires called a halt to proceedings just before the heavens opened again. Match eventually abandoned.

To cap a fraught day the Devon players then got stuck in traffic on the infamous Goss Moor. Hope everyone got home before midnight!

Thanks to the Umpires, the Cornwall management and Troon cricket club for trying to get the match played.
