Smith shines in new role

In light rain Will Murray Devon Under 14's Captain lost the toss and Devon were inserted on a slightly damp green track at Seaton CC on Sunday 1st June. As the weather cleared the new opening partnership of Garry Chappell and Joe Smith put on 84 in 16 overs to give Devon a solid base.

Chappell (34) played a number of beautifully timed shots before being brilliantly caught one handed low down in the slips by Essen who later caught Smith (78) with an oustanding effort at backward square leg. At 110-1 off 27 overs Devon were very handily placed at lunch to push for a good score.

Charles Martin (15) was out shortly after lunch before the reserved Iain Crombie(23) and Smith put on 46 in 10 overs. As the tempo uped wickets were sacrified before debutants Joel Seward (25no) and Harry McDowell (13no) put on 25 in the last 3 overs giving Devon a respectable  and defendable score of 231-7 off 50 overs.

With 35 minutes until tea, Oli Robinson (8-2-22-1) and Joel Seward (10-0-30-2) steamed in and together with vocal agile fielding epitomised by Chappell throwing himself horizontal and stopping a ball single handed at backward square leg, restricted Dorset to 18-1 off 10 overs at tea.

Immediately after tea Will Murray dived full length and stopped a drive and Charles Martin picked up the ball and rattled it over the top of the stumps for Dan Hardy to run out Pearce.Chappell (8-3-13-1) then bowled Jones but Dorset dug in until Carroll (7-2-20-2), had Sweatman well caught by Wrench with his second ball in County cricket. Helped by dropped half chances Armstrong (63no) then anchored Dorset's stubborn reply and with Devon unable to bowl Dorset out, they finished on 149-7 off their 50 overs.

DEVON WON BY 82 runs.
