their nerve. Against tight early bowling Gary Chappell and Martin put on 25 before Chappell was unluckily run out backing up. Martin and Wrench gradually picked up the tempo playing a number of super shots with Martin using his feet really well against the spinners and either chipping the ball over the infield or into gaps, whilst Wrench played some lovely straight back foot drives. To plan when Wrench was out trying one too many ambitious smears, Martin anchored the rest of the innings completing his 100 off 126 balls in 140 mins. Will Murray played a little cameo before Iain Crombie and Martin then put on 33 in the last 6 overs. 266-3 perhaps 30 runs less than Devon should have got on what turned out to be a very good pitch. In the hour before tea Wiltshire progressed steadily with only a hint of what was to come. After a splendid tea provided by the parents, (thanks- but look what it did to our bowlers!), they immediately went on the attack taking every opportunity to find the boundary. Collier 86 held the innings together whilst Bowler 22, then Taylor 66 and then Perritt 44 tried all they could to win the match for Wiltshire. The Devon bowlers- minus Carroll with a badly bruised arm-no one than Chappell held their nerve and with 22 required off the last over, it was a tall order. The first two balls went for 4, nail biting stuff Mum, but Nicholls came through backed up by some excellent fielding and Devon won by 9 runs. A magnificent match enjoyed by all. Wiltshire 257-8. Iain Crombie finished with 2 wickets destroying the stumps on both occasions whilst Jamie Wyman also bowled well. Birthday boy Joel Seward ploy of bowling around the wickets worked and Harry McDowell's slower ball worked most of the time! Thanks to Blundell's School, the Umpires and to the parents for the excellent tea. Thanks to Jon Nicholls for scoring. |
