Devon
won by 4 wickets.
This result
means that Devon have won their group (7 points out of a maximum of 8)
and qualify for the quarter finals of the competition.
A three hour early morning car journey was not ideal preparation for fielding
first on a hot day and some of Devon’s early play reflected this.
Hampshire established a good base with 48 for the first wicket before
Lloyd was run out and Ashton c&b by James Carr, both in the same over.
Thereafter Hampshire were unable to put together any significant partnerships
in the face of accurate bowling and improved fielding. A good performance
behind the stumps by Justin Yau increased the pressure and Hampshire were
eventually dismissed for 135, a very achievable target on a good pitch.
This certainly seemed the case when Josh Bess and Dan Bowser put on 96
for the first wicket before both were dismissed at the same total, Tom
Allin quickly followed and 96 for 0 became 97 for 3. Accurate spin bowling
then saw Devon reduced to 125 for 6 and a mini crisis. Some sensible running
by Carr and Gray shifted the balance back in Devon’s favour and
the game was won with 2.3 overs to spare.
The quarter final will be played at a neutral venue before 10th August.
