DRAWN Warwickshire 10pts Devon 10 pts
This was
an excellent game of cricket, high on quality and very competitive. Warwickshire
won the toss and not surprisingly chose to bowl on a damp overcast morning
but with the forecast of much better conditions later in the day.
Devon responded well to this with Bess and Bowser putting on 41 for the
first wicket in 10 overs. Josh Bess batted particularly well scoring 55
before being bowled.Whilst a number of players all made useful contributions
Devon did lose their way a little with a number of careless shots and
were pegged back to 169 for 7 (A delicate position on a good pitch). Typical
of this team Carr and Porter reacted very positively and took the final
total to 231 for 7. Far from a safe total on this ground but defendable.
Warwickshire replied with a steady start of 50 for the first wicket but
in 20 overs due to some accurate bowling. Thereafter the advantage ebbed
and flowed and a delightful innings from Ord threatened to turn the game
Warwickshires way before being run out through a direct hit from Jon Raistrick,
a crucial wicket and only emphasises the importance of good fielding.
Two similar dismissals followed, Acton and Bess being the fielders and
Warwickshire were forced to play out the last few overs to ensure the
draw.
Given the current league positions (Devon having won 2 games with maximum
points whilst Warwickshire drew with Gloucestershire) the result clearly
benefited Devon.
At the end there were numerous compliments on the quality of Devon’s
cricket, including some from people with respected reputations in the
game. The team were a credit to youth cricket in Devon , not simply for
their technical ability but their obvious pride at representing their
county and clear determination to compete against a good Warwickshire
side. Well done to all involved (including our opponents).
