North v South at Westward
Ho! Sunday May 15th (page 2)
|
They
hit boundary after boundary, in a spell that seemed to last a
lifetime and looked unlikely to be broken. It was after the
partnership was entering its 19th over that Watton was Run Out by
another impressive throw and Bracher, on for Clements, was ice cool
behind the stumps to remove the South batsman for 37. A fantastic
knock. Kelmere was still there and whilst he was the South were
looking likely winners. It was then the North team spirit and
"never say die" attitude came through.. |
It
came to the final over, South needing 13 for the win and North
needing 3 wickets. Draw? We'll when Ray Clarke came to bowl the
final over there was almost a little inevitability about the
outcome. The first ball was a dot, Kelmere missing out on a boundary
opportunity. Second ball and Kelmere was bowled but Clarke for a
superb 39. One or 2 raised eyebrows! The next ball a 2. Draw was
looking so likely with only 3 balls remaining. Next ball Bracher
took it superbly and noticing the batsman off balance whipped the
bails off. Stumped! 191-9 and now 2 balls remaining. A nervous
looking number 11 walked to the crease. Huxtable crowding the bat in
hope of a catch. Clarke bowls. Huge appeal. OUT! LBW. The North win
with a ball and 10 runs to spare. |
South
had played their part in a great game but it was North who took
maximum points and with it a 2nd place finish in the
competition. Manager Asa Wright delighted at the work of the
players throughout and praised their team spirit and attitude.
"These lads have come together for a total of about 20
hours since last autumn. To think that we have a team spirit that
most club sides would be envious of is a credit to
the players and parents who come together and make it a success. It
is an utter pleasure and privilage to be involved with this team and
I wish every one of them success in the season." |
