West v South – Match Drawn

On a fine day at Mount House School the West won the toss and decided to field, Their opening bowlers, Steed and Hancock, bowled a tight line and reduced their visitors to 24-3 after 8 overs. The South responded with a good partnership between Charlie Stocks (15) and Jonty Parsons (46) putting on 75 for the fourth wicket with the West’s bowling deteriorating and they bowled too many poor deliveries. At the fall of Stocks caught by Hancock off Matthews, Parsons was joined by Abbott (18) and the pair took full advantage. The West responded with some brilliant fielding and they started to claw their way back into the game and with the introduction of the opening bowlers brought Parsons dismissal, bowled by a brilliant in swinger from Hancock. In the end they restricted the South to 160-7. The best bowling figures for the West were achieved by Will Steed (6-1-13-3) and Jordan Hancock (8-1-31-2).

The tea team talk for the West indicated that they believed they could reach their target but they would have to improve on their previous Sunday’s performance which they achieved. Steed and Pope provided a steady start being confronted by equally tight bowling from Bucknor, Drake and Eaves slowed down their opponents. Despite this the home side started to make steady progress. Steed fell to Bucknor. Economical bowling from slow left armer Woolcott further restricted the West allied to outstanding fielding the West were finding the chase difficult. Adam Stevenson (20) batted really well but fell immediately after the drinks break. The West was in further trouble at 85-5 when Osama Alam (13) was dismissed. They decided then to just bat and see how many they could make but they continued to loose wickets and were 107-8 with nine overs it was left to Ellery Jones (16*) and Jordan Hancock to negotiate a draw both batting outstandingly. The West finished on 137 -8 thanks to a health contribution of 72 extras, the leading South bowlers were Davies (4-1-18-2) and Saunders (5-1-16-2) a thoroughly enjoyable encounter.
