2007 Champions - The West

Batting first the West scored at four and a half an over against the South with opener T,Cummings falling seven short of a deserved fifty. Alam did reach this landmark going on to be undefeated on 63 and being nominated man of the match for his side. Jack Richardson took 4-28 off seven overs. The East started well with an opening partnership of 78 between Bosomworth and Folland (16) leading the way, unfortunately once they both departed at the same score it was left to lower order to fight for a draw but apart from an undefeated 16 from Chaplin and ten runs from Richardon to add to his wickets winning him the man of the match award they were not successful being all out in 33.2 overs.

The two top teams from last year's competition met at a sunny and warm Westward Ho! The South's skipper, McKenna, called correctly and asked the North to bat on a green early season wicket. The home side started confidently and had taken the score to 48 in the fourteenth over when George Yates bowled Ansell. After the first drinks break Craig Overton and booker compiled a partnership of 52 in ten overs. Booker was the next to go, caught on the boundary off Adeley. Three overs later, Joe Abbot, took the vital wicket of Overton whose 76 had included eleven fours. The South were now back in the game. The North's middle order moved the score on with one and twos. However Jamie Overton put his foot on the accelerator and the bat then started to dominate as he struck five fours but he fell at 191 with five overs remaining. Eaves and Buckner then took back the initiative restricting the North to 200-9. Buckner took 3-36 off his eight overs.

The South responded well with the scoreboard ticking over rapidly with the North not helping their cause with some wayward bowling. This persisted throughout the innings with thirty-three wides being conceded. Once the bowlers hit their straps the South were reduced to 38-5 after twelve overs as Briggs struck twice with vitally the South's captain and big hitter was run out for a duck. However the South's man of the Match George Yates held the innings together until he fell at 69-7 in the twenty-sixth over - advantage North? Joe Abbott and Jonty Parsons (26*) decided otherwise and put on a vital 50 for the eighth wicket. With Abbott dismissed by Ansell the North scented victory but it was not to be as the last wicket pair of Parsons and adeley added 40 in seven overs to claim a hard fought draw. To their credit both sides played hard and should be proud of their efforts in a highly intriging match.

On a breezy day at the picturesque Stoke Gabriel ground the East thoroughly deserved their comprehensive victory over the South. Having been invited to bat the East reached an impressive 215 -9 off their forty-four overs. The innings was built around a patient but increasingly aggressive 61 by opener Harrison Folland, who was the East's man of the match. Matt Golding 32 and Merrick Steward 27 also made important contributions but the icing on the cake came with Tapper (21*) putting on an unbeaten 28 for the ninth wicket in the final four overs. In general the South bowled far too many loose deliveries but Craig Eaves (the South's man of the match) returning 3 for 18 off eight overs, Woolcott took 2-24 also off eight and Yates 2-22 in six overs all could be pleased with their personal contributions.

When they batted the South totally failed to come to grip with the challenging task in hand and folded tamely to be all out for 90 within 34 overs. All of the East bowlers had impressive figures with the spinners Golding, Steward and Folland sharing seven wickets between them.

The West and North did not travel as rain had an early say. It is unlikely the game will be rearranged.

On a bright day Ipplepen C.C. provided an excellent batting track. The South elected to bowl first and despite a spirited attempt failed to match the West's challenging total of 208-8, reaching 176-9 in reply. The visitors total was built around a magnificent undefeated hundred from Scagloini who came in the second over. He played shots all around the wicket and his ton included twelve boundaries. He put on Staddon (20) a second wicket partnership of 60 and equally importantly 39 for the eighth wicket with Stevenson (22) off the last four overs was essential to the outcome. The South, who conceded forty extras, looked a tired unit by the end whilst Yates 1-16 off six, Bucknor 2-28 also off six overs, Joe Abbott ( eight overs 3-39) and Saunders, whose four overs cost just 7 runs could be pleased with their efforts.

The highlight of the home sides run chase was a polished 73 from opener Yates, in particular in the seventh wicket partnership of 55 with Abbott ((22) during which it briefly looked as if the South might get home. The final pairing of Lewis and Woolcott saw out the final three overs from the pace attack to deny the West outright victory. The West conceded 43 extras including 37 wides and the pick of their bowlers was the spin duo of Solomon and Cummins. Bowling in tandem they critically slowed down the south's run rate before blowing away the middle order. Soloman's spell of 3-23 off eight was particularly impressive.

The warm sunny weather finally returned to greet the North and East teams at Westward Ho! The North won the toss and Curtis dually asked the East to bat. Folland and Bosomworth batted the early overs conservatively and added 33 for the first wicket before a fine catch by Jamie Overton off Lochead removed Folland. The East continued to bat slowly as the run rate struggled to around two an over. The introduction of debutant Robert Mann bowling slow medium inswing foxed the East batters as he produced figures of 8-5-4-4, several batters tried to force the ball but were dismissed by a series of one handed catches. The East’s innings closed at 101-7 off their full quota of 44 overs with top scorer Bosomworth (47) not being dismissed until the fortieth over. The key to the North’s fine bowling effort was to take the pace off the ball.

The North stated shakily with Craig Overton being dropped on 2 off the bowling of Mansfield and the East, later, paid dearly for this let off. Against the medium pacers moved on to 62-2 off fifteen overs and the first drinks break. The East’s two successes were the wickets of Booker, who was smartly stumped by Bosomworth off Mansfield and Curtis who was bowled by Bath. The Overton twins then decided that the game would be won sooner rather than later. After drinks spin was introduced but this only speeded up the rate as the North completed their victory in the twenty-first over. Craig Overton remained unbeaten on 67 (11 fours) and Jamie Overton’s undefeated 21 included three fours and a six. With the West picking up sufficient points in drawing with the South this fine result left the North in second place.
