The Devon team started their season last Sunday in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 9 wicket win over Gwent at Exeter’s University Ground. Newcomer Raymond Clarke (North Devon) bagged 4 wickets for only 12 runs in an impressive debut display of swing bowling, ably supported by Barnaby Huxtable (Braunton) who bowled with controlled hostility for 2-18.  They were backed up by  some sound fielding and certain suicidal instincts among Gwent’s batsmen, who woke up rather late to the need to put a decent score on the board.

The Devon reply was dominated by a knock of 70 by Braunton’s Tom Mitcham, very much the senior partner in an opening stand of 94 with Freddie Gabbitas.  Gwent tried 7 bowlers, to no effect, and Devon cruised to victory in only 21 overs. An excellent team effort, and a very good start the season!
