Records tumble!

Cornwall (3)

Gater finished on 119 not out and Toland on 65 not out in an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 163.

With records tumbling and personal bests in abundance it was time for photos of the scoreboard all round. Rarely can both bowling attacks have been mauled in such a fashion at this level.

For Cornwall: a fine show by their batters to set up such a monumental challenge – for Devon: a triumph particularly for the two batting heroes. They fashioned the win by executing every task and role required with total clarity, and did it in a way that underlines their increasing maturity as middle order batsmen.

For our hosts, Mount Hawke and Porthtowan CC: hearty congratulations for staging the match which they had meticulously prepared for – and for producing a “road” for the batters (530+ runs) and a graveyard for the bowlers (6 wickets).

The lessons for our lads were numerous, especially the bowlers and fielders – but we now know that chasing down a big total is within our grasp and every match reveals another dimension to the team’s and individuals’ capabilities.

Devon finished the group stage of the ECB Cup on top of the table with 4 wins from 4 and now move on to the Quarter Finals away to (probably) Wales. An interesting re-match in prospect!!
