Reflections

Wales (2) Wales though had the advantage of being so far ahead of the clock that they could afford to watchful – with Carr and especially Debenham bowling very tight lines.

JJ finally broke the Wools-Johns partnership trapping the former LBW. At 164-6 there was still an opportunity for Devon to make inroads and force an exciting finish – but Johns and now Davies were having none of it and steered the home side to victory in the 40th over.

On reflection Devon should have got more runs and with 3 batters getting established one at least should have gone on to get a big score – that would have enabled others to bat around him. In the field the lads looked somewhat jaded and short of that collective edge that is their hallmark. There was to be no comfort in rotating the fielders in the heat either as injuries to first James Toland and then Lewis Gregory took their toll. Barring JJ Debenham and Alex Carr all bowlers were put off in varying degrees by the wind. Debenham’s outstanding figures of 9-1-17-1 were exemplary. So – disappointment, certainly, but a chance to re-focus and tighten up in all areas this Tuesday at Bradninch C.C against Gwent.
