2004 Under 14 Inter District Reports (2) With Marc Webber injured in the warm up Harry Stephenson again took over and took up where he had left off in the previous game. Nathan Probert had a good day in the field with a fine catch and a direct run out from 40 yards. The West's fielding satisfied their manager with a united performance.
Forty-eight for the West's first wicket
was the required start when Duncan Hefford (30) got over ambitious and
tried to hit leg spinner Tidball into the field only to be caught at mid
on. His was a useful knock that set up the tempo with his captain James
Fletcher. The skipper fell next but Probert and James Burke (22), who had
bowled well at the death, kept up the momentum and the West were 88-3 at
the half way stage. It was the sixth wicket pairing of Michael Cowling and
Jack Nash who gave their side the impetus to win the game putting on 68
vital runs. However with ten overs left 64 runs were still required with
five wickets left. The pair countered the run rate with two big overs when
they posted double figures each hitting a six. Nash was out at 183 for a
vital 25 and it was left to Matt Gregory, Harry Stephenson (who was run
out going for the winning run) and Tom Howourth to steer the West home. As
with Jack Newton's knock against the East Cowling's innings was a
career best and he batted beautifully increasing the rate just at the right
times. He was undefeated on 69 having hit 9 fours and 2 sixes. The
North kept at their task well and contributed to an absorbing game of
cricket with their captain Gareth Tidball (20; 2-11 and 2 catches) named their man of the
match but although it was tight between Andrews and Cowling the batter won
the nod for the West.
