Tight Finish

Tthe introduction of Lewis Bosomworth’s spin into the attack slowed the Hatherleigh efforts somewhat – and they lost Cherrington to Bosomworth in the 23rd over. At 92 for 5 and at least an over behind the clock players and spectators alike were beginning to sense an exciting finish. This became increasingly obvious through overs 25 to 28. In the 29th over Exeter St James snatched another wicket – keeper and skipper Tim Phillips catching Jack Hayman off Sam Skinner, and when only one run was scored as well it was down to the last over with Hatherleigh needing 5 to win and with wickets in hand. Penberthy watched from the non-strikers end as Bosomworth bowled a dot ball – but then he and Jake Burnage scampered a bye.

Four balls to go and 4 to win – hearts were in mouths!! Penberthy hit a 2 off the next ball and followed this with a 4 through extra cover – a fitting way for a skipper to see his side home. He top scored with 34 not out.Hatherleigh won by 4 wickets amidst jubilant scenes, but it takes two to make a great match and Exeter St James played a major role in a game where, in the end, it was a shame someone had to lose.Peter Wright presented the trophies on behalf of DCBYA and commended both sides for the quality of their cricket, especially in the field. He also thanked umpires Clive Bulled and Vic Gainey, and Brian Jones, Charles Inniss and Paul Cooper on behalf of the hosts Hatherleigh Cricket Club for their excellent hospitality.
