Palladium Builders West Devon Youth Cricket League
Semi-Final ( 03/08/08)
Plymstock 146 for 1 (H. Kerton 60, M. Thomas 48, T. Richards 0-14)
Plympton 62 for 9 (D. Queen 16, B. Gibson 3-11, B. Patrick 2-1, R. Maffey 2-6)
Plymstock beat Plympton by 84 runs
Plymstock entertained Plympton for the second time in a week when the teams met in the semi-final of the Palladium League Cup. Unfortunately Plympton were without some of their usual players due to holidays. The home team won the toss and chose to bat with Hallam Kerton having a new opening partner in Max Thomas. Twenty overs later the two were still in. Kerton, who was run out off the last ball of the innings, amassed 60 and Thomas just failed to reach his first 50 by only two runs. Some wayward bowling to start the innings helped the batting total, but Plymstock found it difficult to score against T Richards, whose four overs only cost 14 runs.
Plympton set about chasing the 146 runs required but within a few overs the rain came and play was interrupted for about 30 mins. When the teams went back out some accurate bowling and keen fielding in difficult conditions kept the visitors' score down. Dan Queen (16) and R Walton (15) were the main scorers for Plympton. Billy Gibson took 3-11 and Ross Maffey 2-6 in three overs of accurate spin bowling, and Ben Patrick finished with 2 for 1.
Plymstock now go forward to the final to be played in September when, hopefully, the weather will be more summery.
Plymstock meet either Whitchurch or Tideford (this semi-final to be played by 31st August) in the final on Sunday, 14th September.
Final
14/09/08
Tideford 82 for 5 (D. Shirley 28, B. Kitt-Osborne 17, R. Maffey 3-10)
Plymstock 74 for 9 (O. White 24, M. Thomas 14, B. Kitt-Osborne 2-4, K. Watts 2-14)
Tideford beat Plymstock by 8 runs
Tideford & Plymstock met in the final of the Palladium Builders U13 final at Whitchurch on a rare sunny afternoon. As at the earlier U15 final, a minute silence was held in memory of Peter Cox before the game started. Peter was a well-known local umpire & cricket follower who was a familiar figure at Plymstock & many other grounds. He was a great supporter of Plymstock cricket teams both seniors & juniors.
Plymstock won the toss on a very wet grass pitch & asked the Cornish side to bat first. Ben Kitt-Osborne & James Taylor put on 22 in quick time but Osborne was well caught behind by Hallam Kerton off Billy Gibson for 17 & Ben Underwood then bowled Taylor (7). Ross Maffey bowled his 4 overs of spin for only 10 runs getting three important middle innings wickets including Dugal Shirley whose 28 was well constructed on a difficult batting strip. Harry Landers supported with 10 not out in Tideford’s final 20 over total of 82-5. Ben Kitt-Osborne opened the bowling with a very hostile spell accounting for Charles O'Higgins & next ball top batsman Kerton caught behind. Oliver White played sensibly for his 24 & was well supported for a time by Ryan Bailey (8). Kyran Watts took two quick wickets & Plymstock were always behind the run rate. A brave 14 by Max Thomas took Plymstock close but 12 off the last over was too tall an order & Tideford won by 8 runs. Osborne (4overs 4 runs 2 wkts), Watts 4-14-2) Nick Pooley (4-15-2) were the pick of Tideford bowlers .
The game was played in a very sporting manner by both teams & the large crowd was treated to an excellent example of the strength of local junior cricket.
Thanks must go to the two umpires Mr Roger Berry and Mr Terry Kingscott who had already stood in the earlier U11 final, to Whitchurch for their hospitality & organisation, The Palladium Builders for their continued sponsorship & the league organisers who again made the final a smooth & enjoyable day.
Man of the match was awarded to Ben Kitt-Osborne whose useful 17 & invaluable bowling helped Tideford become the Cup winners in their first year in the league.
