Cornwood Dels beat Whitchurch by 6 wkts

In the Palladium under 11 Cup competition Cornwood Delamore played Whitchurch in a closely contested final. The Dels went on to win the match ending Whitchurch’s three year unbeaten run in this event. Cornwood Dels won the toss and put the John Stevens (Devon) Cup runners-up into bat. After a slow start Whitchurch eventually finished on 80 for 4 in their 20 overs. This was mainly due to the efforts of Luke Cummings (26*) and Charlie Barriball (25*). The pick of the Cornwood bowlers were Reece Boase (3-12) and Matt Skeemer (1-5). The Dels bowled with good control to keep their opponents down to an achievable total.

Whitchurch got off to a great start by running out George Thompson with the score on 1. However a stand of 40 between Skeemer (25*) and Boase (13) got the Dels back on track. The Dels then lost quick wickets and found scoring very hard because of some tight bowling from Whitchurch. A close finish was always on the cards.Cornwood needed 5 runs off the last over to win the match. John Whitfield and Matt Petherbridge managed to scramble some singles through good running. On the penultimate ball Petherbridge scored the winning runs for the Dels when he hit a boundary to finish 4 not out and secure Cornwood a deserved victory.

After the game a presentation of the cup and individual awards was made, Reece Boase of Cornwood winning the Man of the Match award.

Thanks must go to Whitchurch for hosting the game and umpires Roger Berry & Terry Kingscott.
