Plymouth Mount Wise 117 for 8 (J. Cummings 49, M. Adams 2-15)

Yelverton beat Plymouth Mount Wise by 3 runs

After the disappointment of losing in the QuarterFinal of the MCC U13 National Club Championship last week, Yelverton Typhoons proceeded to the 2nd round after a narrow victory over Plymouth Mount Wise. Plymouth Mount Wise won the toss on a warm sunny evening and asked Yelverton to bat first.  After an opening partnership of 26, Yelverton lost opener B. Pearson. This was to prove to be the fielding side’s last success as remaining opener D.Ackford and No.3 J. Douie batted through the remainder of the innings for score of 77 not out and 20 not out respectively in Yelverton’s score of 120 for 1 off their 20 overs.  The pick of the Mount Wise bowlers were D. Goody (4-0-16-1) & B. Singlehurst (4-1-13-0). Ackford and D Cooper opened the bowling for Yelverton, but no early wickets were lost as Mount Wise slowly accumulated runs.  The introduction of W. Johnson (4-0-17-1) immediately produced a breakthough, Johnson taking a wicket with his first delivery with the score on 27.  M. Adams also bowled well in tandem with Johnson bowling his 4 over spell for 15 runs and picking up 2 wickets.  At the halfway point, Mount Wise were on 46 for 3 but remaining opener J. Cummings was holding the innings together.  Despite losing 2 more wickets, the Mount Wise total climbed steadily in the next 8 overs and with 2 overs left they needed 16 to win.  J. Douie bowled the penultimate over and picked up the wicket of B. Couldwell, well caught by C. Dawe at cover and the final over arrived with 10 still required.  However, D. Cooper held his nerve and dismissed Cummings for a well played 49 and a run out left Mount Wise 4 runs short of victory on 117 – 8.  An entertaining game and a narrow victory for the Typhoons by 3 runs.

Connaris and J. Webber bowled a tight opening 8 overs.  Connaris (2 for 11) and J. Webber (1 for 8).  However J. Brazier got the scoreboard ticking with 27 and was well supported by Matthew Evans who contributed 16 in their 50 run partnership.  However to control proceedings for Plympton on came Alistair Wass who picked up both Evans and Brazier and ended up with great figures of 4 for 12 for 2 overs.  In the ended Plympton won by 26 runs.
