With McKenna out of the action it was critical that the momentum was kept
up. At 109 Devon lost Merrick Steward and at 124 David Grainger- Allen.
McKenna then returned to the action as the pair put on a further 27 added
to their earlier contribution of 18 took their joint contribution to 45.
McKenna was caught for a splendid 67(7 fours, 72 balls), a career best by several
miles and the pressure was now back on Devon. Remarkably the side had
kept to the required scoring rate throughout the innings and now with
12 overs remaining the rate required was still 5.83! The pressure was
now on not only Overton but all the remaining batsman to score at this
rate without losing the three remaining wickets. Cricket is all about
partnerships as Jonty Parsons (7). Tom Worth (7) and Dylan Penberthy all
continued the good work of their predecessors. Overton was unstoppable
having now passed his fifty, when he did give a chance it had ice on it
as it went so high. With last man Penberthy pushing and running to give
Overton the strike Devon needed four runs off the thirty eighth and final
over. First ball Penberthy gives the strike to Overton, three dot balls
- for the first time all afternoon you could hear the birds singing -
penultimate ball - 4 - game over noise levels attract the environmental
health department. A magnificent team performance revolving around the
brilliance of individuals McKenna and Overton who was undefeated on 67
(10 fours, 55 balls). Devon did loose one battle the extras - conceding 64 to
Dorset's
46. Cricket can be a great game, it was a great day until England conceded
2 in the 91st minute to ruin the journey home.
