South Hams Roborough Cricket Club came to the
rescue of the Devon Under 13s when with a free league Saturday they were
able to host the annual under 13 game against Millfield School. Roborough
were very kind and generous hosts going out of their way to make the two
sides very welcome. Luke Bess continued his luck with the toss and lost it
and Millfield took first use of the pitch. They were never in control as
wickets fell at regular intervals as all the home side bowlers bowled well.
The rest of the side supported with great enthusiasm in the field as the
Somerset School were bowled out for 98 with Paignton's Mark Gilmour taking
5-9 with his medium pacers.
Sam Smith and Jack Hockin opened and batted sensibly but it was not until
the skipper Luke Bess came to the crease that the initiative was taken by
the home side as he batted with great aggression playing a gem of a cameo
until he was caught sweeping for 33. Smith went immediately afterwards but
James Burke and Shane Evenden ensured a comfortable victory with plenty of
overs left.
After two victories in their two friendlies the Devon Under 13s now embark
on the National County Competition.
