FILLEIGH suffered a first defeat of the season when beaten by 67 runs at North Devon .

Dan Bowser continued his fine Sunday League form with a splendid 139, an innings that included four 6s and sixteen 4s. Tom Ansell hit 49 as the Instow men posted a healthy total of 280-6. John Hickman and Jamie Palmer both bagged brace of wickets for the morning leaders who made a decent fist of the run chase, especially when Jaz Kalsi was at the crease. Kalsi hit two huge 6s and seven 4s in a knock of 71 and Palmer hit 24 batting at number nine to add to his earlier wickets. However wickets fell at regular intervals and the reply close don 213-8. Max Curtis was the most successful home bowler with 3-29.

Lynton & Lynmouth climbed into joint top spot – they share that distinction with non playing Heathcoat – after a 15 run victory at Victoria Park who have slumped to third bottom after a run of defeats. Graham Fitt and Chris McKee both hit 37 in the Lynton total of 178. Colin Bettis (3-36) and Andy Jeffrey (2-31) claimed wickets for the visiting side who then bowled out the hosts for 162. Connor Constable led the bowling honours with 4-37, just outdoing Dad, Nick Constable (3-33), whilst both Jamie Palmer and Tuson each bagged a brace.

Alec Hodges was in great form for Bideford spanking a glorious 108 in a team total of 253-7 at home to Newton Tracey. Ali Clements played his part with a fine 82 as only Steve Bater (3-55) made any impression with the ball. The visitors made a good fist of the run chase, finally closing on 230-9. Phil Steward continued his god form with 52, Simon Gear hit 49 and Ian Gear chipped in with 39. Ian Haytor claimed 4-49 and Chris Luxton took 3-31 for the home side who were claiming victory for only the 3 rd time this term.

Division Two

BRAUNTON completed the first half of their seasons fixture schedule with a seventh win in eight games, beating hosts Bratton Fleming by seven wickets.

The hosts batted first and posted a healthy 194 led by skipper Paddy Dartnoll (51) and Adam Paine (34). Mark Mitchell was the pick of the bowlers with 5-20 from 5.1 overs and then, after Ian Roberts had struck 55 at the top of the order, Tom Popham (56no) and Brady Saunders (53no) saw their side to a seven wicket success. Pete Simmonds was the most successful of the home bowlers with 2-46.

Beaford won for only the second time this season and with it dumped Filleigh II on the bottom of the table thanks to an eight wicket win. Filleigh batted first and closed on 171-9 with Rob Collier (43) and James Popplewell (39) the main contributors. It was then a case of ‘over to the Lakes' as Mark Lake hit an unbeaten 70 and Geoff Lake scored 56 to see Beaford to a comfortable win. Harvey James and James Marsh were the two home bowlers to take wickets.

Holsworthy climbed into 3 rd spot with an excellent run chase to defeat visiting Hatherleigh. Robert Cockwill hit a superb 91 and the in-form Gareth Tidball was spared buying yet another jug by a single run when dismissed on 49 as Hatherleigh posted a very healthy 245-8. James Long the pick of the home bowlers with 3-28 and the same player then played his part in a successful run chase, hitting a quick 40. John Tidball was the star for the hosts with an unbeaten 77 whilst Steve Drew chipped in with an unbeaten 51 and there was also a half century from Matt Williams as the home side closed the game out on 246-4.

Division Three

IT was a very special day for Witheridge as they played their first ever game at their brand new home of Gratten Park , and christened the pitch with a much merited victory against Barnstaple & Pilton II.

The home side batted first and Karl Bremmer had the honour of scoring the first ever competitive run at the venue. The New Zealander did not stick around for much longer and it was left to Chris Kelmere (85no), James Hope (76) – his the first 50 on then new ground – and Richard Ashworth (42) to lead the hosts to a close of 272-4. John Wainwright produced the best of the visiting bowler's figures with 1-25. Bob Heaman then hit 26 in the reply but wickets fell at regular intervals as Paul Rendell returned figures of 3-11 from 6 overs and Barum closed on 144-9.

Stuart Cole said of the new wicket: “It played very well indeed and we are so pleased with it. It was rather on the slow side but the bounce was even with only the odd one keeping low. It's certainly testament to the hard work of groundsman Richard Hope that it has turned out so well.”

Ilfracombe were given an almighty turning over at Westleigh when they were put in to bat and bundled out inside 18 overs for a paltry 35. Richard Pearson was the star of the show as he sent down 8.5 overs to return the magnificent figures of 7-11. There was also a brace of wickets for Jay Corry whilst in that visiting total of 35 all but 13 of the runs came in extras! The hosts did lose two wickets in the run chase but James Ford with an unbeaten 26 saw Westleigh to a second win of the season.

Shebbear's Martin Bray has already hit a wheelbarrow of runs this season and he was denied yet another century when dismissed for 92 in the home game with Bratton Fleming II. Quinton Clarke was also in good touch as he hit 73 and with Jamie Pengelly also striking a fluent 45 the home side were able to close on a huge 336-8. Bratton Fleming had a real go at the run chase before losing wickets at what proved to be crucial moments and the reply floundered on 268-8. Jack Frith and Clara Nealson each claimed three wickets for Shebbear who remain hot on the heels of 100% section leaders Incorrigibles.

Sandford II were five wicket winners at Bude where they chased down the home side's total of 156 thanks to a superb 62 from Nigel Ashplant. Only Warren Rumble (92) was able to make much impression as the combination of Pete Steer (4-17) and Peter Rowe (4-27). Then Ashplant senior will have made his skipper son, Simon, very pleased with the way he led the run chase. Pete Whitby chipped in with 31 as only Derek Piper (2-28) and Mark Purcell (2-32) had any success with the ball for Bude.

Division Four

BIDEFORD II skipper Darren Hart hit a maiden century as he opened and struck 115 of his side's total of 234-7 at Newton Tracey II.

Alan Withecombe gave good support with 38. Alan Hillman claimed 3-33 for the home side who then were bowled out for 208 after taking on a brave run chase. Graham Moore led the reply with 64 and Colin Wadsworth chipped in with an unbeaten 51 but Paul Hockaday helped himself to match winning figures of 4-29 in 6.4 overs.

Kelseymen were ten wicket winners in their home game with Victoria Park II, although, to be fair to the visitors they were struggling to field a side, calling in their regular umpire and another player who had to skip off an hour before stumps to catch a flight to a holiday destination! Mark Slade (44) and Dave Anderson (38no) were the principle run getters for the visitors. Anderson is the side's regular umpire and had not played a full game for some three years. Dave Branch also hit 19 – he was the Park player who needed to be excused later on to catch a plane. The visiting innings ended on 139 as John Lethbridge (3-17), Martin Lewis (2-17), Walid Iqbal (2-22) and Dan Croakham (2-28) combined to bundle the visitors out. Paul Jaggers (72n0) and Harry Brooker (63no) clearly had their eye on returning to the pavilion to watch the England versus India World Twenty20 game for they only needed 21 overs to knock off the required runs as the home side claimed a ten wicket win.

Weare Giffard maintained their hold at the top of the table with victory over Cheriton Fitzpaine. The Mid Devon side slip out of the top two places after this second successive defeat.

North Devon III won by 59 runs at Lynton & Lynmouth II where they first scored 159-7 and then bowled the home side out for 100. Mike Ansell top scored with 69 and Matt Smith hit 44 whilst Pete Druce claimed a couple of wickets for the home side for whom only Tristan Jones (39) was able to put bat to ball with much effect. Colin Paine and Barnie Haywood both took a couple of wickets for victors.

Division Five

HEATHCOAT II picked up their second win of the season with a six-wicket Knightshayes success over Nomansland.

The Witheridge men batted first and were bowled out for 177 with James Gibson (58) and Gary Say (39) the main run getters. Nick Lyneham was the home hero as he claimed a fivefer with figures of 5-50. Pete Randerson then stroked a trademark 84 before running himself out. Jim Cridland hit 38 and there was an unbeaten 30 from Matt Hague who also hit the winning runs – a beautiful cover drive, to seal victory.

Bude II won a low scoring affair at bottom of the table Bishops Nympton. Ben Smith (33) and Thomas Hall (31) were the leading scorers in a Bude total of 129. James Campbell took three wickets for the home side and then managed to provide the top score in the reply, that 17 as the home side were bundled out for 98 to lose by 31 runs. Bude skipper Mike Taylor took 3-17 and James Ellis took 2-15.

North Molton won a thrilling game at Barnstaple & Pilton where they restricted the home side to 182-9 after scoring 191-5. Matt Geen (53no) and Guy Loosemore (52) were the main scorers in the visitor's innings. Chris Newton claimed 4-38 for Barum who then made a great fist of the run chase, finally closing just a couple of lusty blows from victory. Dave Loader led the way with 44 and James Rowe hit 28, but there was also a young man who almost made a huge name for himself in the contest as 15 year old Joe Brearley hit 39 to take his side to the brink of victory. Loosemore took 3-20 and there were a couple of wickets too for Charlie Downes as North Molton won to continue their pursuit of 100% section leaders Belstone.
