v East at South Devon CC Sunday May 8th
|
Weather: Cloudy turning to bright sun shine, chilly
Toss: East won and
chose to field |
East applied early
pressure only conceding 11 runs off the first 8 overs: Pinney 2
maidens, McDowell 1 maiden. South batted patiently with
Tuckett and Doxat-Pratt building the score to 24 until the
first wicket fell in the 11th over. Toland having made
the breakthrough with his first delivery went off the pitch with a
bad back. South forged another good partnership through Tuckett and
Thompson (cpt), both batting with composure and good running moved
the score to 53. East reverted to spin through Debenham and Lenygon.
Debenham trapped Tuckett LBW for a well-constructed 15 runs. Enter
Hickey who struck some lusty blows. Just before the drinks break one
powerful strike went straight back to the bowler Lenygon. Miles made
a valiant attempt to catch it, but in the attempt was struck on the
throat. It takes a lot to stop Miles, who had to sit out the rest of
the game |
Drinks break 22 overs: The East had some thinking to do with
South moving along comfortably to 58 for 2. Lenygon, still finding
it difficult to talk (that will be a first) predicted a total of 160
to 180 for South.
|
Resumption: South put
another 30 runs until a very good catch by Debenham to dismiss
Hickey (on 38) off the 1st delivery from Goss. Thompson
then shuffled across the line and was trapped LBW to Steer the
East’s left arm seamer. Ingham bowled Eaves cheaply for 2. 114 for
5 became 132 for 7 with Raistrick taking two wickets. A strong final
partnership between Ansley and Longstreet added 38 runs to the
total. Ansley trapped LBW Gater with the very last delivery of the
innings. Longstreet undefeated on 22. |
South total: 170 for 8 (50 extras) off 44 overs
|
Parr opened with Lenygon (now fully recovered) and attacked
from the start until Longstreet bowled both. The score 30 for 2
after 6 overs. Toland and Gater continued to blaze away with 6s into
the crowd. The score raced to 55 in 11th over when Toland
hit one straight up in the air. A well-taken catch by Southcombe off
the bowling of Eaves, saw the back of Toland (27 including two 6s),
which should slow things down a bit. Gater continued to attack with
an element of luck, supported by the phlegmatic Parkin, he kept the
scorers busy. Thompson stumped Parkin in the blink of an eye, off
the bowling of Eaves. The score now 94 for 4 in the 17th
over. Enter the busy McDowell who opened his innings with another
boundary. Gater having reached his 50 went for another big hit but
was caught by Hickey off the bowling of Hearn. Gater’s
entertaining innings of 52 off 35 balls, included one 6,seven 4s.
