Inter District Under 14s Reports The Wests Campaign

West Devon was crowned 2003 Inter District under 14 Champions having completed a clean sweep in this year’s competition. Their first game was away to the East at Seaton and in overcast and damp conditions they batted first. Captain Charles Martin set the example with a 70 ball 57. He put on 80 for the first wicket with Richard Garland. Martin hit 5 fours and 4 sixes in his 75 minute stay at the crease. Garland departed 5 balls later and Danny Carroll and James Nicholls then put on 19 for the third wicket. Carroll departed at 103 and Nelson struck as James Burke was trapped in front at 111. Nicholls (25) and James Frappell put on 24 for fifth wicket. Further useful contributions took the score to 165 -7 at the end of the West’s 50 overs. The East’s skipper Garry Chappell finished with the remarkable figures of 10-6-6-1. Harry McDowell took 2-29 with the remaining wickets shared between Seward, Howe, Smith and Wyman.

In response the East’s innings never gained momentum with extras being top scorer with 24 as they were dismissed for 91 in 41 overs. Danny Carroll took 4-11 off his nine overs and under 12 James Burke took 3-8 off his six overs. The captain Charles Martin completed a fine individual performance with 2 wickets for 12 runs. After the initial fixture at Plymstock was rained off the West’s game with the South was re-arranged at Cornwood where the damp conditions resulted in the game being played on a non turf track. The sun eventually came out and it shone on the West who won by 233 runs. The West was invited to bat and the highlight of their 291 all out was an outstanding 103 by Will Murray. He batted 101 minutes faced 120 balls and hit 16 fours and one six in his 103. He put on 63 with James Nicholls and 104 with Danny Carroll. Carroll went on to score an 87 minute 51 facing 63 balls striking 2 fours. Ollie Robinson scored an undefeated 24 as Wildgoose took 3-57 and Joe Hyde 2-27.

Ollie Robinson made an early breakthrough for the West as he sent back both of the South openers for 2. He finished with figures of 3-8 and Carroll completed his second useful performance of the season with another four wicket haul this time taking them for 14 runs.
