Plymstock 94-3 (O. Mulberry 40, L. Savage 27, R. Skinner 2-20)

Plymstock beat Plympton by 7 wkts

On a cloudy night Plympton opened the batting. Tight bowling by Plymstock restricted the flow of runs but J. Outtram (28) and M. Kidd (37 not out) helped set a target of 91 to win, I. White (2-1-2-2) being the most successful bowler. Plymstock openers O. Mulberry (40) and L. Savage (27) made a good start with the total being overhauled with 3 overs to spare. R. Skinner (4-0-20-2) being the most successful of the Plympton attack.

13/06/07

Yelverton 76-5 (R. Bennett 42, M. Boon 2-14, J. Stephens 1-11)

Tavistock 80-1 (J. Stephens 31*, J. McGahey 30*, R. Bennett 1-11)

Tavistock beat Yelverton by 9 wkts

Yelverton elected to bat and started slowly against accurate bowling from McGahey (4-2-11-0) and Stephens (4-1-11-1). Bennett struck a number of boundaries in his 42 but when dismissed by Boon (4-0-14-2) the Yelverton innings ended on a modest 76 in their 20 overs. The Tavistock reply began slowly with Bennett (4-1-11-1) taking an early wicket before Stephens (31 not out) and McGahey (30 not out) playing to a comfortable win with over 2 overs left.

13/06/07

Whitchurch 143-9 (J. Meadows 50, O. Frost 37, R. Dart 3-22)

Cornwood 119-8 (R. Dart 49, O. Frost 3-32, J. Meadows 2-20)

Whitchurch beat Cornwood by 24 runs

Whitchurch won the toss and choose to bat.  Openers Meadows and O. Frost (37) got the home side off to a brisk start before Cornwood opening bowler R. Howe (4-0-28-1) removed Frost lbw.  However Meadows stayed at the crease to score his maiden 50 with a straight driven 6 before finally being removed by R. Dart (4-0-22-3), the pick of the Cornwood bowlers.  Some spirited resistance from B. Frost (12) and a bit of help from extras (32) saw the home side closing with 143 for 8 wickets. Cornwood made a slower start, struggling to pick up runs from the Whitchurch opening bowlers Macrae (4-0-12-1) and Meadows (4-1-20-2).  However, despite the loss of his opening partner, R. Dart stayed at the crease to build an excellent innings of 49 before falling as the sixth wicket to the bowling of O. Frost (4-0-32-3).  The only other batting resistance came from Yarnold (15 not out) who played some excellent shots that belied his 10th slot in the batting order.  Again with some assistance from wides (22), Cornwood closed on 119 for 8.  The Whitchurch fielding was greatly improved with Bond and Sherrell doing some excellent ground fielding and five catches being held in total. Whitchurch will be hosting local rivals Tavistock in the next match.

Week 8 beginning 17th June 2007

20/06/07

Plymouth 122-3 (G. Stephenson 33, J. Libby 31, J. Mailing 1-26)

Plymouth beat Ivybridge by 31 runs

Week 9 beginning 24th June 2007

26/06/07

Plymouth Civil Service 116-9 (M. Alam 41, C. Sanders 25, J. Coker 3-5, J. Mailling 3-17)

Ivybridge 110-3 (G. Daw 34, J. Zimmerman 33, D. Ellard 1-28, C. Sanders 1-9)

Plymouth Civil Service beat Ivybridge by 6 runs

PCSCC U15s once again had Mohsin Alam to thank for the majority of the runs in their total of 116-9 against Ivybridge. Mohsin scored 41 and was well supported by Chris Sanders who contributed 25 in a partnership of 55 for the 4th wicket after Josh Mailing who took 3 for 17 off of his 4 overs had reduced Civil to 26-3. Once Mohsin was out Civil’s batting struggled against the accurate bowling of Josh Coker who finished with 3 for 5 off of his 4 overs including 3 wickets in his last over. In reply Ivybridge got off to a good start with Greg Daw and Josh Zimmerman putting on 58 for the first wicket. Once Greg was out for 34 well caught by Dan Winsor off the bowling of Dan Ellard, Civil managed to slow the run rate down mainly due to 4 overs of miserly left arm spin from Dan Winsor who went for only 7 runs off of his 4 overs. Chris Sanders removed the danger man Zimmerman for 33 and Ivybridge were unable to score the 12 runs needed off the last over bowled by that man Mohsin.

28/06/07

Cornwood 122-5 (F. DeMendonca 53*, S. Tall 20, J. McGahey 1-10, J. Stephens 1-13)

Tavistock 93 all out (M. Boon 24, J. McGahey 18, E. Grewal 5-8, R. Dart 3-3)

Cornwood beat Tavistock by 26 runs

In this period of repeated cancellations a window opened for Cornwood to travel to the Ring to play hosts Tavistock. Tavistock chose to bowl first with opening pair McGahey (4-0-10-1) and Stephens (4-0-13-0) making it difficult for Cornwood to get the ball away off the damp pitch. At 26 for 3 in 8 overs Cornwood looked in trouble but Tall (20) and DeMendonca (53 not out) helped themselves to the remaining Tavistock bowlers to raise the score to a more respectable 122. Tavistock’s reply was to keep the scoreboard ticking over at the required run rate from the off. Apart from an early run out by Cornwood’s athletic fielding the Tavistock batting looked very solid with Boon (24) and McGahey (18) carving some fine shots. A slippery field and dropped catches, the ball doing a fair impression of a bar of soap, made matters worse. Tavistock were sailing to a win but Grewal (4-2-8-5) left Tavy reeling in a spell of destructive fast bowling with four overs remaining. It was left to Dart (1-0-3-3) to finish off the tail in the 18th over leaving Tavistock 29 runs short on an evening where repeated flurries of Dartmoor rain threatened to end an otherwise well-fought match.

Cup Preliminary Round

27/06/07

Whitchurch 107-7 (T. Sherrell 45, A. Chesters 13, C. Sanders 3-26, D. Windsor 3-10)

Plymouth Civil Service 70 all out (C. Sanders 12, J. Elliott 4-11, J. Meadows 3-20)

Whitchurch beat Plymouth Civil Service by 37 runs

On Wednesday 27th Whitchurch U15s hosted Plymouth Civil Service in the preliminary round of the Palladium League Cup competition.  The hosts won the toss and elected to bat on a rather damp pitch.  With both openers falling cheaply it was left to Sherrell to play a captain’s innings, amassing 45 runs with some excellent running and strong boundary shots.  Chesters (13) provided good support before falling victim to C. Sanders (3-26).  The pick of Civil’s bowlers was Windsor returning figures of 3-10.  Whitchurch closed their innings 107 for 7. Whitchurch started the defence of what seemed a rather low total with some good, economical bowling.  Elliott was the first to strike, removing opener Alam (7), with Luffman taking one of three good catches behind the stumps.  Meadows (3-20) chipped in with the wicket of the other opener, Carr (11) as the home side made good progress through Civil’s batting line up.  Sherrell added further misery to the visitors, taking 2 for 7 before Elliott returned for his final over.   This proved too much for Civil as Elliott claimed a further three wickets to return superb figures of 4 for 11.  Fittingly for a team that showed excellent fielding and good teamwork, the final wicket fell to a direct run out from the arm of B Frost.  Civil closed on 70 all out, a 37 run victory for Whitchurch who move on to face Yelverton in the next round of the cup competition.

28/06/07

Tideford 95-9 (T. Williams 28, L. Marsh 25, B. Jackson 3-6, J. Libby 3-9)

Plymouth 97-1 (G. Stephenson 37*, A. Chapman 36*, T. Williams 1-12)

Plymouth beat Tideford by 9 wkts

Plymouth won the toss and put Tideford into bat on a very wet pitch. Marsh (25) & Williams (28) gave Tideford a solid platform to build on and 95 looked a decent total to defend. Ben Jackson (3.5-2-6-3) had the best of the bowling and Jake Libby (4-0-9-3) was close behind.

The Plymouth reply centred on Jackon (15), Stephenson (37 not out) and Chapman (36 not out) taking the bowling on. They passed the Tideford total in the fourteenth over with one wicket down. Chapman was pick of the batsmen and after surviving a very close lbw appeal went on to carry his bat. Williams (4-0-12-1) was the best of the Tideford bowlers

29/06/07

Yelverton 94-5 (R. Avery 29, M. Tamsett 25, A. Meredith 2-21)

Whitchurch 116-4 (T. Sherrell 79*, J. Meadows 12, O. Mulberry 1-28)

Whitchurch beat Plymstock by 7 wkts

On a damp evening Plymstock batted first and posted a score of 115 off their 20 overs, Joe O'Hara top scoring with 41 not out and Max Thomson with 19 not out. O Macrae being the pick of the bowlers returning 4 for 16.

In reply T. Sherrell carried the Whitchurch attack almost single-handed scoring 79 not out, ensuring a Whitchurch win with 3 overs to spare.

11/07/07

Tideford 92-6 (L. Marsh 26, J. Horsborough 20*, J. Mailling 3-15)

Ivybridge 95-9 (Z. Reeves 19*, L. Marsh 2-1, J. Davis 2-10)

Ivybridge beat Tideford by 1 wkt

After a succession of losses Ivybridge got back to winning ways with a narrow victory over Cornish rivals Tideford. Ivybridge won the toss and put the visitors into bat. Tight bowling from J. Coker (0-20) and A. Bradley (1-10) at the start of the innings followed by J. Mailling (3-15) and T. Bennett (1-22) restricted the Tideford batting. L. Marsh (26) was well caught before J. Horsborough (20 not out) and J. Davis (6 not out) managed to get the score up to a defendable 92 for 6. The Ivybridge innings got off to a slow start with both openers going early. Despite a hard-fought 15 from A. Bradley wickets began to fall regularly and at 49 for 6 Ivy looked all but out of the game. L. Marsh was the pick of the Tideford bowlers with only one run and 2 wickets coming from his 4 overs. Z. Reeves (19 not out) kept Ivy in the game and in the last over with 7 runs to win picked up 5 from the first 3 balls. The next ball skidded down the leg side, racing to the boundary giving Ivybridge the victory with one wicket to spare.

11/07/07

Yelverton 117-2 (T. Watkins 50*, T. Price 35, G. Stephenson 1-31)

Plymouth 67 all out (A. King 25, T. Watkins 4-21, J. Lenden 2-5)

Yelverton beat Plymouth by 50 runs

Whoever won the toss in this game was going to have the advantage on this damp Yelverton pitch. Yelverton elected to bat first and had a slow start with good bowling from James (4-0-12-0) and Bryant (4-0-18-0). Bennett (19) was the first wicket to fall off Stephenson (4-0-31-1). Price (35) accelerated the scoring rate hitting several boundaries and Watkins (50 not out) played a captain’s innings carrying his bat for the 20 overs, the team finishing on 117. In reply Yelverton’s bowling kept Plymouth under the required rate and never looked as if they would make the total required. King (25) and Chapman (15) were the best performers for Plymouth with only another 11 runs made by the other batsmen. It was Watkins’ night for bowling, taking 4 wickets for 21 runs, Plymouth falling 50 short.

12/07/07

Plymstock 75-8 (O. Mulberry 15, R. Dart 3-6, R. Howe 1-11)

Cornwood 79-3 (E. Grewal 21*, S. Tall 16, O. Mulberry 1-15)

Cornwood beat Plymstock by 7 wkts

This match was played on an evening that threatened even more rain but both sides were keen to get on with it. Plymstock were put into bat and found it very difficult to get the ball away with a combination of tight Cornwood bowling and a surprisingly well-made Delamore Park pitch. Mulberry (15) and O’Hara (12) were the only batsmen to get into double figures. Cornwood bowlers shared the wickets apart from Robin Dart who took 3 of the Plymstock middle-order, Plymstock finishing on 75. Cornwood’s reply was a lot smarter than Plymstock and they reached the winning runs in the 12th over with Ewan Grewal (21 not out) hitting the winning boundary. Plymstock openers Mulberry (3-0-15-1) and Savage (4-0-19-1) were the only wicket takers as darkness started to draw in.

Week 12 beginning 15th July 2007

16/07/07

Whitchurch 117-8 (O. Frost 52, O. Macrae 15, B. Pridham 3-26, B. James 1-12)

Tavistock 119-4 (J. McGahey 49, M. Friend 40*, O. Macrae 2-17)

Tavistock beat Whitchurch by 6 wkts

Any Tavistock v. Whitchurch game is always a competitive affair as with most ‘derby’ games and this one was no exception. Whitchurch got off to a flying start with the Tavistock bowlers bowling too short. Ollie Frost took full advantage hitting seven fours and a six in a fine innings of 52. Tavistock struck back with Stephens having Meadows caught behind and McGahey having Sherrell caught at short extra-cover. After ten overs a score of 77 for 4 looked like giving Whitchurch a large total but a tight spell by Ben James (4-0-12-1) and three wickets for 26 by off-spinner Ben Pridham restricted Whitchurch to 118 off their 20 overs.

The Tavistock reply got off to poor start with Pridham being bowled by Macrae for 1. Things didn’t get much better with Tavistock reduced to 22 for 3. Then came the partnership of 84 between James McGahey and Mark Friend. With 12 needed to win McGahey was unluckily run out for 49, but Friend (40) was joined by Leeson to see Tavvy home by 6 wickets.

17/07/07

Plymstock 153-1 (O. Mulberry 64*, L. Savage 52, J. McGahey 0-16)

Tavistock 94 all out (J. Leeson 28, B. James 20*, A. Bird 3-6, M. Trevorrow 1-9)

Plymstock beat Tavistock by 59 runs

On a sunny evening Plymstock won the toss and elected to bat. An opening stand of 128 between Oliver Mulberry (64 not out) and Liam Savage (52) helped set a total of 153 for 1. John McGahet was the pick of the Tavvy bowlers conceding only 16 runs off his 4 overs.

In reply Tavistock lost wickets at a steady rate and were all out for 94 with one ball remaining, 59 runs short.. J. Leeson top scored with 28 and B. Jones 20 not out. Alex Bird returned bowling figures of 3 for 6 in 1.5 overs, the best of the 9 bowlers used by Plymstock.

17/07/07

Plymouth Civil Service 158-5 ( A. Carr 74, M. Alam 19, C. Oliver 2-40)

Yelverton 82 all out (R. Bennett 28, N. Bulley 3-14, T. Shaw 2-5)

Plymouth Civil Service beat Yelverton by 76 runs

18/07/07

Plympton 74-5 (P. Fulton 29*, Z. Reeves 1-6, J. Coker 1-7)

Ivybridge 75-8 (A. Bradley 28*, J. Coker 18, P. Fulton 4-8)

Ivybridge beat Plympton by 2 wkts

Another tense affair at Erme Playing Fields saw Ivybridge host Plympton for their last home game of the season. Josh Coker put Plympton into bat and Plympton were soon in trouble with 15 for 2 off 6 overs. P. Fulton (29 not out) was the only batsman to trouble Ivybridge and helped the score to 74. J. Coker (4-0-7-1) and Z. Reeves (4-1-6-1) were the pick of the bowlers.

Ivy’s chase didn’t get off to the greatest of starts but a solid partnership of Bradley (28 not out) and Coker (18) helped to push the score. P. Fulton (4-0-6-4) opened the flood gates and a succession of 5 quick wickets put Plympton back in control. However, with only 1 run needed from the last 3 balls Ivybridge scampered home to victory with one ball left.

19/07/07

Tideford 61 all out (T. Williams 10, E. Staddon 3-6, S. Tall 2-11)

Cornwood 62-8 (S. Tall 16, T. Williams 4-23, J. Taylor 3-16)

Cornwood beat Tideford by 2 wkts

At last, a very pleasant evening where cricket was the winner. Tideford put themselves in to bat on a very spongy pitch from which runs would always be hard to get. Only T. Williams (10) managed double figures with the Cornwood bowling making it very hard to score. Elliott Staddon (4-1-6-3) was particularly accurate as was Steve Tall (2-0-11-2) leaving Tideford all out for 61 in the 18th over.

Cornwood’s reply was just as measured and seemed to be on course for a comfortable win until Williams (4-1-23-4) and Taylor (4-0-16-3) used the local conditions to shake the batting apart. Only Steve Tall (16) managed double figures but sensible batting eventually secured the win in the 14th over with 8 wickets down, Cornwood breathing a big sigh of relief at the end.

19/07/07

Whitchurch 103-9 (J. Meadows 38, B. Frost 20, G. Stephenson 4-7, M. Partington-Smith 3-10)

Plymouth 105-3 (G. Stephenson 56*, A. King 20, B. Frost 2-37)

Plymouth beat Whitchurch by 7 wkts.

This game was turned by George Stephenson (again!) and Nick Wills who between them took 5 for 17 off eight overs after Whitchurch had taken 41 off the first 3. Meadows (38) top scored for Whitchurch, helping them to finish on 103 with Partington-Smith taking the last 3 batsmen in the last over.

Stephenson then settled the matter when Plymouth came to bat with 56 not out (3 sixes & 7 fours), Barney Frost (4-0-37-2) taking the wickets. Plymouth reached their target in the 17th over with 7 wickets to spare.
