The Palladium Builders Merchants West Devon U13 cricket final was contested between Plymstock Sabres & Plymstock Panthers at Whitchurch CC on a rare sunny evening. The Panthers had become this season’s 'giantkillers' by disposing of joint league winners Plymouth & recovering from an almost impossible situation to beat Ivybridge in the semi final. Adam Stevenson won the toss for the Sabres & decided to bat. Max Thomas opened the bowling & struck with the first ball, clean bowling Jo Batten. Ollie Elliot Smith (8) & Rory Coltham (47) put on 47 for the second wicket & then Adam Stevenson joined Coltham to put on another 40 runs. The Panthers were without semi final bowling heroes Jake Bellison & Bradley Shepherd but Peter Beckeridge (2-23) bowled 4 overs of testing off-spin. Hallam Kerton joined Stevenson & they took the score to 134 after 20 overs in quick time. James Blackmore took an excellent catch in the covers to dismiss Coltham in what was a very good fielding display overall.
Blackmore & Dean Hill opened for Plymstock Panthers & put on a solid 30 in the face of very accurate bowling from Billy Gibson & Ross Maffey. Hill was run out for 10 by a direct throw from Elliot Smith while Blackmore (23) soldiered on before Billy Gibson caught him off Scott Munn’s leg-spin. Max Thomas hit 17 before being run out off the last ball to take the Panthers to 79. In what was probably Plymstock Sabres best bowling & fielding performance of the season, the Panthers were unable to break free from the tight hold the Sabres had on the match. The game was of a very high standard in all aspects & just demonstrates the quality of local youth cricket. Thanks were passed to the umpires & Whitchurch for hosting the final before the trophies were presented to both sides.
James Blackmore was voted Man of the match for his overall contribution & the positive way in which he skippered the Panthers.
