Under 15 Cup Final14/09/08 Plymouth Peverell 164 -1 (J. Libby 74*, A. Hill 47, G. Stephenson 29*, M. Smith 0-11) Plymstock 117-4 (A. Stevenson 69, M. Smith 16*, G. Overill 3-20) Plymouth Peverell beat Plymstock by 47 runs The U15’s season finale was thankfully given a setting on a Sunday morning where the sun shone at last and the players able to remember what the game of cricket was actually like to play. Before the game a minute silence was held in memory of Peter Cox, a well-known local umpire & cricket follower who was a familiar figure at Plymstock & many other grounds. Plymouth won the toss and decided to bat on a very damp pitch. Openers Jake Libby and Alex Hill played themselves in against some very accurate bowling from Adam Stevenson and Mark Smith. They continued to accelerate until Hill (47) was caught by Stevenson after putting on a century partnership with Libby. George Stephenson (29*) opened his account with a typical boundary six and helped Plymouth to an unexpectedly large total, with some inconsistent Plymstock bowling and fielding, Libby carrying his bat on 74. Such a large total, even on a drying pitch, was always a tall order. A fiery Jack Hughes and Sam Higgins kept Plymstock openers Hallam Kerton and Adam Stevenson under control. Unable to find gaps in the field a frustrated Kerton (8) was caught off George Overill (3-20) and Stevenson, who tried to push the score with Mark Smith (16*), was eventually caught for a valiant 69. With tight work in the field a major factor, Plymouth won by a comfortable 47 runs. Man of the match, adjudicated by umpire Dave Court, was given to Plymouth’s Jake Libby for his fine batting performance as well as his captaincy and work in the field. A great deal of thanks goes to hosts Yelverton CC who laid-on a barbecue, refreshments and a well manicured ground which is a credit to their Club. |
