Difficult to write a match report when you are not there! Thank you Jim Parker and Andy Fairbairn for helping out with Adam and I missing. Unfortunately one of the umpires did not turn up and so thank you Jim and Cornwall parents for umpiring before I arrived late on. Thank you David Vallance for umpiring and Sue for scoring, thank you all the parents for the magnificent tea and Rebecca Hoddinott for organising the teas and drinks etc.
We lost the toss and Cornwall put us in. Matt Skeemer and Marcus Hoddinott put on 56 in 17 overs before Skeemer was caught. Jack Maunder survived a caught behind and put on 59 with Marcus in 10 overs, before Jack is caught behind. Marcus, against Cornwall the side he bats well against, he had got runs the day before for Exeter, was then out for a very good 70 just after drinks in the 34th over. Dan Powell followed next over before Seb Ansley and Henry Gater put on 38 in 4 overs! Seb is then out and there are a number of small partnerships with Henry at last fulfilling his potential scoring a great 60 before he is caught in the 44th over. You can do it! The innings closes 251-8, Devon scoring 119 off the last 15 overs. Great effort.
After tea Cornwall's reply gets off to a bad start when Turpin is caught by Seb Ansley off Ollie Dawe. 20-1. Hosking and Gribble then put on 57 in 13 overs before Matt Skeemer has Hosking caught by Ollie. Dom Bess then takes two wickets, a caught and bowled and LBW, Cornwall 110-4 off 32 overs. I had arrived by now and was umpiring, with Ollie and others bending my ear. Yes I did have a lovely weekend lads and the wedding was awesome. The fielding, I felt was a little below par, the odd ground fielding error and half chance catches not being taken or players not going for them- possibly because the players felt Cornwall were not going to win, we had won already and the interest had therefore gone out of the game. Quite a few hits had also gone to cow corner and we had not set the trap. Perhaps I am being harsh again? Todd then took a wicket, Mark Gribble (72) well caught on the edge of the circle by Dan Powell. He then took another wicket and the match petered out Cornwall 183-7 off their 45 overs and Devon winning by 68 runs.
Finally thank you Hatherleigh CC and more particularly Charles Inniss for everything you did. Thank you russell for the photos.
Devon 251-8. Hoddinott 70. Gater 60. Partnerships Skeemer and Hoddinott 56; Hoddinott and Maunder 59. Cornwall 183-7. Gribble 72. Devon won by 68 runs.
