CHUDLEIGH are set to parade Belgian international Faisal Khan in tomorrow’s game against Budleigh at Kate Brook.
Chudleigh have been short of bowling firepower after losing seamers Jon Martin and Sean Day to South Devon during the winter
With Ben Holmes also missing at the start of the season, the attack was looking a bit threadbare.
So Chudleigh trawled around and found Khan, who has played through the age groups for Belgium and has just returned from playing for his country in an ICC tournament in Spain.
Last season he played for Barnard Castle in North Yorkshire before spending part of the winter in the ICC Centre of Excellence.
As an EU passport holder, Khan can play in the same side as Sacinthan Galhenage, who made a promising debut for Chudleigh in their three-wicket defeat at Brixham last time out.
Galhenage, a South African of Sri Lankan descent, has been playing for Free State U19s at home, having come up through the age groups from U13.
A batter who bowls off-spin, he made 26 in Chudleigh’s total of 128 all out, then took three for 33 from ten overs as Brixham struggled to get the runs.
Chudleigh, much changed from the side that won promotion last season, struggled against Brixham’s miserly spin attack.
Gary Spencer (1-18) and Paul Heath (2-16) kept it tight, then Jordan Gregory (5-28) ripped out the middle order.
Next best after Galhenage with 16 was Rob Clarke.
Chudleigh have as good as they got in the field and has Brixham 39 for four after 18 overs - Clarke taking two and Will Heather sending back dangerman Andy Pugh.
Andrew Lewin’s 44 off 96 balls in a stand of 74 with Gregory (37) made it possible for Brixham to win and by the Galhenage got them both out on 113 the target was down to 16 to win.
Ed Foreman, the new Chudleigh captain, said there were plenty of positives to take into the game against Budleigh at Kate Brook this Saturday.
“Considering we were missing both our opening bowlers, I was very pleased with our bowling performance and also our fielding was excellent,” said Formeman.
“I have to give credit to Brixham, who looked very organised and put a lot of pressure on with their spinners. The obvious area for improvement is our batting.
“For most of us this was our first game of the season so runs were hard to come by. But we needed to make more of the starts we got.”
