A NEW name will go on the Devon Senior Cup this season following wins for Bovey Tracey and Bradninch in the two semi-finals.
Bradninch beat Cornwood by 33 runs in the other semi-final to book their ticket to Plympton for the final on August Bank Holiday Sunday. They have not been this far before in the competition, which dates back to 1966.
“It will be the biggest game in the club’s history, that’s for sure,” said Bradninch captain Ross Acton.
“Halfway through the season we decided to concentrate on the cup as we were out of contention by then in the league. So far that decision has paid off.
“If we can go on to win the cup it will be a sign that that the club has really arrived.”
Bradninch put 188 for eight on the board at Cornwood – Haydn Murray blasting 91 of them.
Murray and Dan Hardy came together with the score on 13 for three and their stand of 156 formed the backbone of the Bradninch total.
As is often the way when a big stand ends, wickets tumble and Bradninch lost three for no runs at all before their overs ran out.
The bowler was Dave Petherbridge, which was some compensation for him in an eight-over spell which cost 62 runs.
Cornwood’s problem was struggling to keep up with the run rate in the second half of their innings. They were well placed at 77 for two at drinks, but slowed up against Gary Chappell (3-26) and Murray (2-18).
Richard Conn (33) and Craig Harris (32) were the two main Cornwood run scorers in their final tally of 155 for nine.
“On that wicket we always felt we had enough runs to defend with the bowling we had,” said Bradninch skipper Acton.
“Haydn is in great form right now, which is just as well as we were in a lot of trouble at 13 for three. “Dan Hardy batted superbly as well.”
Bovey Tracey breezed past Paignton by eight wickets in their semi-final of the Tony Pryce Sports-sponsored competition. They have appeared in three previous finals – 1994, 1996 and 1997 – and lost them all.
Bovey were always odds-on favourites to go through after dismissing Paignton for 112 with five of their 40 overs to come.
Ryan Bougourd was the destroyer in chief for Bovey with an opening salvo of four wickets for nine runs in six overs as Paignton collapsed to 29 for five.
George Yates (42) and Tom Field (17) put on 36 for the eight wicket, but 113 to win was never going to trouble Bovey unduly.
Chris Bradley led Bovey from the top with 51 not out and with Richard Longstreet (18) and Andy Kingdon (34) at the other end got the scores level.
Kingdon was the last man out, he was bowled by Millfield School rising star George Yates, by when all that mattered was Bradley reaching his half-century, which he did with the match-winning boundary.
