After the journey, eventful for one of our families, we found the ground at Newport in excellent condition, the pitch hard and outfield probably the best we had seen this year. After the warm up, during which Harry C tweaked a groin muscle (didn't know you had any H) and subsequently played no major part, we inserted Wales, hoping to keep them down to a score we could chase. Ollie Sale and Ben Homes opened the bowling and both bowled with pace but no luck until Ollie's shoulder started to play up. He was replaced by Gillam Crouch but it was not until Samuel Wyatt-Haines came on that the first wicket fell at 30, Wood caught behind by Peter Taylor. At 48 Wyatt-Haines then bowled Jones. Lawlor, Wales outstanding player on the day and D Jones then put on 170 which was to turn out to be the match winning partnership. Whilst Wyatt-Haines and Ali Chilcott took 3 more wickets, Devon's spinners Billy Barriball and Luke Ansell did not make any real impact, as Lawlor maturely worked all the bowlers around using the large outfield to take ones, twos and threes to great effect. It was a very good lesson in how to bat, taking no risks, use the pace of the ball and play the ball around into gaps and accumalate runs. He was eventually out for 116 caught by Theo Thomson off Chilcott, whilst Jones made 51. Wales finished on 233-6 off their 45 overs which given Devon's batting, the condition of the pitch and outfield was certainly gettable if they got off to a good start and had that little bit of luck required in a run chase. Devon's fielding whilst improved was still not attacking/agressive/energetic enough and far too many runs were consequently taken. Another lesson to be learnt!
Ollie Higgs and David Ackford opened Devon's innings with Wales opening with a spinner from one end, a regular occurence in matches this year. Whilst Devon did not loose an early wicket, a first wicket partnership of 46 in 17 overs, unfortunately the run rate started to increase, due to the lack of runs particularly boundaries, which naturally then had a knock on effect on subsequent batters. Higgs was first out 30, (was it a no ball as it was over waist height?) and Ackford followed for 32, after a partnership of 60 with Wyatt-Haines, when the score was on 104 off 28 overs. Theo Thomson was promoted to keep the score ticking over but that failed when he was out first ball LBW playing across Wales' best bowler Wallace who ended up with 5 wickets. Wyatt-Haines on reaching another fifty departed coming down the wicket and getting a thick outside edge caught and Devon's innings gently reached its conclusion with Ben Holmes and Billy Barriball entertaining at the crease. Devon 163-9. Devon lost by 70 runs.
