Gloucestershire ECB CC Match at Gloucester Winget CC 26th July 2011
Early start but easy drive - it rained as we drove past Bristol and then cleared away. All the players arrived but there were no umpires. It turned out they had been told 1.00pm start! The groundsman wanted to know what pitch marking were required. I thought we were away! There were large cracks on the pitch and in consequence we expected some irregular bounce although the groundsman thought the wicket would play the same for both sides.
After a lively warm up, we could still have been at the Festival, Jack Thomas was on fire - so slightly different, Marcus won the toss and put Gloucester in after their performance last week. Gloucester were never however going to bat that poorly and so it turned out to be the case.
Jack Thomas and Ollie Dawe opened and bowled well again. Thomas took the first wicket and wickets then fell at regular intervals and were shared around amongst the bowlers. Jack Thomas was unlucky not to be given a third wicket caught behind, Baber the batsman, going on to bat for 76 minutes before being stumped for 29 by Jack Maunder! Matt Skeemer continued his excellent season with another 2 wickets, including the stumping, Ben Roberts took one as did Todd Rossouw who got the talented Griesharber out LBW after he had been dropped off a Bessy full toss - fortunately not too costly Seb! Seb made up for it with a smart throw causing a run out and there were catches for Gates, Roberts, Rossouw and Bessy. Gloucester’s tail wagged and they went onto score 155-9 from their 45 overs - well within reach if Devon batted sensibly and to potential. It was however ever so hot and humid and the noise and screams from the Fair loud!
Unfortunately Marcus was adjudged LBW early on and Jack Maunder got one that kept low and jagged back. 15-2. Dan Powell and Matt Skeemer then put on 41 before Powell snicked behind and then there were 4 LBWs! The last was however after Bessy and Jack Thomas batting at 7 and 9 respectively had put on 62 and taken Devon to within 2 of winning! Both in the circumstances batted really well with Bessy playing some hansom cover and straight drives and Jack supporting brilliantly, waiting and then hitting straight boundaries. Bessy was very disappointed not to see things through especially when he had actually got a huge edge but the umpire would not have heard it due to the noise of the Fair. Don't show it Bessy. Awesome guys!
Devon won by 2 wickets.
After a chat, hot and tired, it was then into a traffic jam for an hour to travel 5 miles to the M5 and then back down to Devon.
Gloucestershire 155-9. Thomas 8-0-26-2; Skeemer 9-1-21-2; Devon 157-8. Bess 42; Thomas 34 NO. Partnerships Skeemer and Powell 41 and Bess and Thomas 62.
