Wales ECBCA CC Match Torquay Wednesday 27th July
Second game in two days and goodness knows how many games for some of the players in so many days. Too much cricket! We need to discuss this.
It was also going to be a difficult day with dear Alan Higg’s funeral. The U15 players were also meeting at Torquay CC before going over to Paignton. We had a minute’s silence before the match. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Christine and Ollie.
It was cloudy, muggy and the pitch looked as if it may have some irregular bounce, which local knowledge thought could be the case too. We decided we would put Wales in. Another good warm up and then Marcus lost the toss! Wales decided to bat- great! Second over Ollie Dawe got a ball to fly off a length and rapped one of the Wales’ opener’s gloves and the next ball took off. Oh dear! Their minds were quickly set and they mainly then defended at that end. Jack Thomas from the other end however took the first wicket, caught behind by Jack Maunder, the first of his 5 superb catches, 13-1. With the short boundary and fast outfield, however fours and sixes were not difficult and Wales and particularly Thorpe-Yon pushed the score on to 50 in the 15th over when Ben Roberts again from the other end, found the edge of the bat and Maunder took the catch. Matt Skeemer then got his first wicket and it soon became 58-4 when he had Thorpe-Yon (43) caught by Ollie Dawe. As well as Callum Eakins batted wickets fell at regular intervals, Jack Brazier 2 and Todd Rossouw1 plus a run out as pressure mounted and Wales pressed for runs and although there was a 9th wicket partnership of 20 Ollie Dawe removed the two final batsmen and Wales were all out 155 in the 43rd over. It had been a good disciplined bowling display backed up by some good, not outstanding fielding and excellent catching. Rumour has it Ollie Dawe asked how high he got off the ground to take one of his catches at mid on, it was a very good catch, but it was only a few inches Ollie! The demons which had shown themselves had gradually disappeared as Wales’ innings progressed but it would be a question of seeing how the new ball reacted when Devon batted.
After tea it was a case of batting sensibly, taking every scabby run and putting away the bad ball. All was going really well until Marcus decide he wanted a quick single, was quickly told no by Matt but failed to regain his ground and was run out. 41-1 in the 11th over. As Jack Maunder was tired after keeping and due to the heat, Dan Powell agreed to bat 3 and he immediately looked untroubled. Matt Skeemer and Powell took the score onto 82 in the 21st over batting very well against Wales’ spinners, when Dan tried a slightly adventurous shot and was very well caught at mid wicket. Jack Maunder joined Skeemer who was approaching his 50 and together they took the score onto 147, 9 runs short of victory when Matt, who had played fantastically for his 72, played perhaps not surprisingly a tired shot and was caught by Thorpe-Yon who had fielded brilliantly all match at short extra cover. Henry Gater then confidently helped Maunder (25no) score the wining runs and Devon won in the 33rd over by 7 wickets.
This was a great result! Just reward for all the hard work and improvement that has gone on this season. Adam had asked for everyone in the side to look at themselves and give that extra percent. Everyone did - fantastic what a result. Just realise what you have done and what you can do. Don’t get carried away though. Cornwall and Dorset will be dangerous - you must go out and play to your potential. Enjoy it and good luck! You CAN do it!
Wales 155 all out. Dawe 7.2-0-32-2; Skeemer 5-1-16-2; Brazier 6-0-18-2. Devon 157-3. Skeemer 72. Partnerships Skeemer and Hoddinott 41; Skeemer and Powell 41 and Skeemer and Maunder 65.. Devon won by 7 wickets.
