2015 Season

Devon Under 15’s Start their ECB Championship season with 2 Defeats

Exeter's Tom Lammonby cracked an impressive century but it wasn't enough to prevent Devon's under 15 team losing to arch rivals Somerset in their ECB Championship clash.

Skipper Lammonby's 114 included 19 fours as he and Heathcoat's Sam Maunder put on 126 in a second wicket partnership with Maunder scoring a useful 59 in Devon's total of 279-8 from their 50 overs. Opener Jamie Khan also weighed in with 36.

The total seemed a good one but with a beautiful batting track and lightning outfield at Taunton Vale CC, Somerset made light work of the run chase. Wells (106) reached his ton for the hosts in 25 overs and the game was all over with six overs to spare for the loss of just four Somerset wickets. Leon Horn finished with 3-58 for Devon.

It was the second disappointing result for the 15s in a fortnight. Their first championship game ended in a five wicket defeat against Gloucester at Barton CC. Maunder top scored with 26 in Devon’s  total of 105 all out which was never going to be enough. Bad shot selection did not help with seven Devon batsmen being bowled. There were also 27 extras included in the final total! Gloucester won in the 32nd over. Lammonby had the best Devon bowling figures of 2 wickets for 9 runs.

SCOREBOARD:

 Devon Under 15’s: 105 (Maunder 26)

 Gloucestershire Under 15’s: 106-5 (Lammonby 2-9)

Gloucestershire Under 15’s won by five wickets.

Devon Under 15’s: 279-8 (Khan 36, Lammonby 114, Maunder 59)

Somerset Under 15’s: 283-4 (Wells 106)

Somerset won by six wickets.

Devon Under 14’s Lose Narrowly to Wales in Their First ECB Championship Game

Devon Under 14’s took on their international counterparts at Thorverton CC and after a great game of cricket come up just short as Wales won by 3 wickets.

Devon batted first on a pitch with some steep bounce and battled their way to 167 all out with 7 balls to go of their 45 overs. Bryon Knowles top scored with 33 before he was unluckily run out backing up after a straight drive was deflected by the bowler on to the stumps with him just short of his crease. When Devon had Wales 14-3 a victory looked likely but some excellent batting by the Wales middle order saw them scrape home with 3 balls to spare. Kersley Sutton was the pick of the Devon bowlers with figures of 3-29.

Scorecard:

Devon Under 14’s: 167 all out (Knowles 33, Sapiecha 23, Fulton 20)

Wales Under 14’s: 168-7 off 44.3 overs ( Sutton 3-29)

Wales won by 3 wickets

Farmer and O’Connell Star with the Bat for Devon

Under 11’s against Gwent

Devon Under 11’s kicked off their season by hosting Gwent at Plymouth College. The Devon skipper Archie Farkins had won the toss and he decided to ask Gwent to bat.  Gwent started well, if a little slowly and got to drinks at 15 overs  with 49 on the board for the loss of 2 wickets. This was due to some good opening bowling from Archie Farkins and Henry Cooper.  But it was the introduction of Ollie Smith who did the damage with figures of 5-1-16-2. Gwent then pushed on and by the second drinks interval had moved on to 130-4.  The last 19 overs proved fruitful for Gwent as they pushed on to a competitive looking 183-8 off their allotted 40 overs.

After tea Devon made early inroads into the Gwent total due to some aggressive and positive batting from Joe Farmer (47).  After 15 overs Devon had rocketed on to 85-2. There was no let up as Freddie O'Connell, who had scored a century the Sunday before in a district game, hit a very useful 43.  Devon lost 5 wickets in the run chase but surpassed the Gwent total in the 29th over.

Manager Jason Degg was delighted with his team’s first performance of the season. “We bowled well at the start with Ollie Smith showing some very encouraging signs for the season ahead and we had 2 batsmen who looked to attack and did it very well,” said the delighted manager.

Result:

Gwent 183-8 (Ollie Smith 2-16)

Devon 187-5 (Joe Farmer 47,Freddie O'Connell 43)

Devon won by 5 wickets,

Newly relegated to the B league, Devon Under 13 Girls are meeting new county teams. After a very positive performance against Wiltshire they put in another excellent performance against Worcestershire to make it 2 wins out of 2.

Although the catching wasn’t  perfect, the Devon girls bowled and fielded with vigour for a most creditable team performance.  Stand out bowlers were Emma Seward (1-1) Ellen Day (4-9) Grace Heard (4-15) which included one remarkable over with 4 wickets including a  hat trick.

2014 Season

Devon Under 17 Girls come 3rd at the County Performance Finals

Devon Under 17 Girls qualified for this year’s National finals at Moseley Cricket Club (Warwickshire) after topping Performance Group D with an impressive record of P8 W6 L1 T1.

The four counties that qualified were the same as 2013, with Devon drawn to play Sussex (2013 Champions) and Lancashire to play Warwickshire in the Semi-Finals on Thursday 29th August.

Even before the first match Devon suffered a double injury blow with our Captain, Cait O’Keefe, being ruled out of the finals by the ECB due to an ongoing thumb injury and Jessie Jones declared unfit for the first game due to an injury suffered in a representative football match on the day before (the perils of dual sports!).

Thursday 29th August - Semi-Final v. Sussex

Sussex won the toss and decided to bat even though the outfield was still wet from the overnight rain. Devon started well with Annabel Squire and Sophie Mackenzie reducing Sussex to 24-2 after 11, which included removing the dangerous Izzy Collis to a great catch by wicket keeper  Ali Kelly. Devon continued to bowl and field well as unit and in the 33rd over were very much in the box seat with Sussex at 98-8 and struggling. Unfortunately the ability to knock over the last 2 wickets deserted Devon again and Sussex recovered to post a challenging total of 150, which included 38 extras.

Devon started the pursuit with composure and good shot selection, which had been the hallmark of our early performances in the season, and reached 73-2 at drinks. Sophie Mackenzie and  skipper Ali Kelly  putting on 52 for the 2nd wicket. This game was going to be settled by the team that could hold their nerve in the remaining 22 overs. Devon continued to make good progress and reached 122-4 at the end of the 30th over, but then the wheels fell off against two spinners backed up by some good wicket keeping and ground fielding. Devon collapsed to 131 all out in the 37th over with our last 5 batsman failing to trouble the scorer. The game ended with a moment reminiscent of the 2005 Ashes moment with Flintoff and Lee at Edgbaston – Kelly’s superb batting effort, which deserved more, had got us so close to victory. The dejection and frustration in the dressing room afterwards was plain to see. So it was the 3rd/4th play off on Friday for Devon and not the final they desperately wanted.

Result:

Sussex 150 all out in 44.1 overs (Horton 2-32, Bowden 2-30 and M. Squire 2-35)

Devon 131 all out in 36.3 overs (Kelly 48no, Mackenzie 34 and O. Jones 17)

Friday 30th August – 3rd/4th Play Off v. Warwickshire

Warwickshire won the toss and decided to bat. Devon started poorly and looked flat in the field for the first 22 overs of the match in which time Warwickshire moved to 61-1. The only highlight being Annabel Squires bowling spell of 9-0-18-1. It was time for some harsh words from the management team at the rain and then drinks break. The response from the girls was telling and with a workwoman like performance they kept Warwickshire to 130-9 in their 45 overs. It could have been a much lower score if we had started from ball 1! A special mention to Jessie Jones who hobbled her way through the innings to make a telling contribution with the ball.

Time for the batters to step up and win the game. A change to the opening partnership led to 52 being put on the board by Milly Squire and Gemma Lancaster in 15 overs. The forecasted rain duly arrived, but the Umpires deserve credit for keeping the match going until the 20th over to ensure a result could be achieved, albeit rain affected. A top order wobble in the batting saw us reach 75-4 after 20 overs, which put us 16 runs ahead of the required score after 20 overs. The rain persisted and with common sense on all sides the match was abandoned with Devon being declared winners on run rate. Securing 3rd place was a good feeling, but it very much felt like a chance had been missed.

Sussex defeated Lancashire in the final and retained the title for another year.

Result:

Warwickshire 130-9 in 45 overs (Bowden 2-19, Clements and J. Jones 2-21)

Devon 75-4 in 20 overs (Lancaster 19 and M. Squire 17)

Devon’s squad for the finals was Ali Kelly (Captain & WK), Milly Squire, Annabel Squire, Gemma Lancaster, Sophie Mackenzie, Lauren Bowden, Jessie Jones, Olivia Jones, Jemma Horton, Ellie Balsdon, Lydia Clements, Emma Jackman and Cait O’Keefe.

For half the squad it was their last age group matches for Devon and the management team wish them well for the future. The remaining squad members and those moving up from the Under 15s now have the task of reaching the 2015 finals – YOU CAN DO IT!

A big thank you must also go to Jackie Lancaster who has been our scorer for the past 2 years. A true whizz with the coloured pens!

Devon Under 12’s Win Taunton Festival

2 wins and 2 winning draws plus a rained off game was enough for the Devon Under 12’s to win their Taunton Festival. Their first game was against St Stithians, a touring school side from South Africa. Batting first Devon scored 171 with skipper Jack Moore top scoring with 32, supported by James Horler (30), Lois Morrison (22) and Luke Medlock (21). When St Stithians were 44-5 it seemed that the game was one but they fought back to get a draw as they finished on 161-9. Max Hancock had the best bowling figures with 3-28.

Result:

Devon 171 (Jack Moore 32, James Horler 30, Louis Morison 22, Luke Medlock 21)

St Stithians 161-9 (Max Hancock 3-28, Abraham Kopparambil 2-20)
Devon Winning Draw

Day 2 was supposed to be a game against Lancashire but the rain came and no play was possible. Day 3 saw Devon take on Hampshire.  Hancock was again the pick of the bowlers as he took 3-33 as Hampshire struggled in difficult conditions to 139-9 off their 40 overs. Devon's reply saw an opening stand of 46 between Abraham Kopparambil and Will Oxland. Oxland (39) and Sam Read moved the score on to 87 from 30 overs before they were both out within 6 balls. 52 from 10 overs was required. A partnership of 30 in 6 overs between Jack Moore and Ollie Hannam kept Devon just about up with the run rate.  Two wickets then fell with the score on 129, leaving 11 to win 2 overs. James Horler and Louis Morison were at the crease and they got it down to 1 run needed from the last ball. Morison kept his head, dropped the ball down on the offside and scampered home for the winning run to leave Devon winners by 4 wickets.

Result:

Hampshire 139-9 (Max Hancock 3-33, Luke Medlock 2-10, Will Oxland 2-19)
Devon 140-6 (Will Oxland 39, Ollie Hannam 18)

Devon won by 4 wickets

Day 4 and Devon took on the tournament favourites Surrey. Devon lost the toss and are inserted.  Surrey are overjoyed and with the score 17-3 from 8 overs. Sam Read  then dug in and his 37 from 78 balls steadied the ship. Abraham Kopparambil scores 27 before he is dismissed, and then Freddie Ford and Max Hancock scored 36 off the last 4 overs getting the score up to a challenging 175.

Ollie Blakeman took a wicket in his first over. Ollie Hannam at cover taking the catch. At 80-2 Surrey’s top scorer, batting beautifully gives a catch to the grateful Will Oxland. With 24 overs still to go, Surrey are favourites. At this point, Sam Read bowls a tight spell of 10 overs for 20 runs, and all of a sudden the pressure is on Surrey.  Luke Medlock takes 2 wickets Surrey are left to cling on for a losing draw
With one game to go Devon one point behind Surrey going in to the final day. #

Result:

Devon: 175-8 (Sam Read 37, Freddie Ford 31*, Abraham Kopparambil 27)
Surrey: 156-9 (Luke Medlock 2-10,Sam Read 2-20)
Devon Winning Draw

Batting first Devon could only muster 145-6 against Gloucestershire. This looks an inadequate total as Gloucestershire get off to a solid start. At 76-2 with 18 overs to go Devon look sure to lose. Captain Jack Moore decides that spin is the answer and suddenly Gloucestershire lose 8 wickets for 7 runs to collapse to 83 all out to leave Devon winners by 62 runs. With Surrey losing their last game Devon are crowned champions.

Result:

Devon: 145-6 (Abraham Kopparambil 45,Jack Moore 29)
Gloucestershire: 83 all out ( Max Hancock 3-17, Freddie Ford 2-5, Ollie Pugsley 2-5)
Devon won by 62 runs

Devon Under 11’s Beat Hampshire By 29 Runs

Devon Under 11 ‘s won the toss against Hampshire and chose to bat.  This seemed a good decision but some tight bowling from Hampshire made life difficult for Devon.  After the first 10 overs Devon found themselves 25-0 with it all to do to set their opponents a competitive score.  Dylan Hurst made an impressive 40 from 55 balls and together with James Tyson (23) and Isaac Staig (19), Devon recovered well to post 160 before being bowled out in the 39th Over.
At tea the team thought they were 20/30 runs short so early wickets were key.  Opener Sam Jefferson showed what a great asset to the team he is, removing a one of the openers for 0 with his fourth ball.  He went on to complete a 5 over spell conceding 7 runs for 2 wickets.  This was just what Devon needed and Jack Ford also proved useful with his 8-2-15-2 spell.  Eddie Smout-Cooper played his part with some great leg breakes to acquire 2 more wickets. Hampshire succumbed to the pressure and were bowled out in the 29th over for 131 to leave Devon victorious by 29 runs.

Result:

Devon Under 11’s: 160 all out (D Hurst 40, J Tyson 23, I Staig 19)

Hampshire Under 11’s: 131 all out (S Jefferson 3-8, J Ford 2-15, E Smout Cooper 2-40)

Devon won by 29 runs.

Weather Ruins Under 15 Girls Last Game

Wales Under 15’s travelled to Plymouth Cricket Club to take on the Devon Under 15 Girls for the Home team’s final match  of the season. Early morning rain left the pitch rather wet, which gave the Welsh the advantage of winning the toss and inviting Devon to bat. Gone were the early struggles of the season when the Devon girls found it difficult to bat their overs. The recent matches against Cornwall and Somerset  had given the girls the confidence that they could build their innings, which they certainly did and with a wonderful partnership of 129 between Lauren Bowden (42) and Ellie Ingham-Hill (60)  which set up a very promising total of 178-7, off their 40 overs.

With the weather slowly beginning to show signs of deterioration, Wales' Rose Evans (46no) and Georgia Parfitt (20) started with great positivity with the bat. The run rate was to prove to be at Wales' advantage as the rain started, and it was not going to be a passing shower and the match was therefore rained off with Wales winning on the run rate, posting 111 in the 25th over.

Manager Sue Steart said, “It was a great performance from the Devon girls to complete their season. A big well done to all the squad for their commitment and energy throughout the summer.”

Devon Under 11’s Lose Their First Game Of The Season Against Gwent But Bounce Back Against Herefordshire

Gwent Under 11’s hosted Devon Under 11’s at a sun drenched Newport.  After winning the toss the home team decided to bat on a flat hard track. Devon had to wait until the 8th over before Archie Farkins, promoted from the Under 10’s, struck.  The other Gwent opener retired with heat exhaustion which brought 2 new batsmen to crease quite quickly. The Devon bowlers bowled tightly and this was supported in the field by some excellent stops. However a gutsy 67 from Gwent’s number 3 and lack of wickets helped Gwent reach 133-5 after their 40 overs. The Devon run chase started positively but Gwent struck in the 9th over and then a steady stream of wickets followed. No Devon batsmen reached 20 and although not being bowled out Devon got 120-9 and lost their first game by 13 runs.

On Sunday 27th Devon travelled deep into the Herefordshire countryside to hopefully put amends their defeat earlier in the week.  Herefordshire won the toss and elected to bat. They made a good start and Devon had to be patient for their first wicket which came in the 10th over and Herefordshire were 38-1. Steady wickets fell and a burst of 3 wickets in 3 overs from Charlie Ward (3-1-4-3) ended the innings with the hosts slumping to 82 all out in the 25th over. Devon made quick work of the reply and a fine 42* from Joe DuGay ensured Devon past the total in the 14th over.

Results:

Gwent Under 11’s: 133-5

Devon Under 11’s: 120-9

Gwent won by 13 runs

Herefordshire Under 11’s: 82 all out (C Ward 3-4)

Devon Under 11’s: 83-1

Devon won by 9 wickets

Devon Under 13’s Well Beaten By Hampshire

On a hot and sunny day Hampshire Under 11’s were easy winners against their Devon counterparts in their match played at Totton & Eling CC.

With a hard pitch and fast outfield, batting first was an easy decision to make after for the Devon captain winning the toss. A good stand between James Degg (41) and Max Mejner (86) looked to have set a strong foundation and at 126 for 2 you would have been forgiven for thinking Devon were in the driving seat. When Degg was out with 7 overs to go Devon needed to get on top of what had already been a very useful Hampshire bowling attack. It was hard for new batters to attack immediately and with wickets falling at regular intervals in the final overs, Devon reached a well under par 165 for 5.  The highlight of the Devon innings was a personal best score of 86 for Max Mejner who batted sensibly, chipping the infield and accumulating a score. He was well supported by Degg in their stand of 108.

The Hamsphire innings began well for them and badly for Devon as they put on 89 for the first wicket.  It had taken 21 overs however.  Disappointing only one other wicket was taken before the opposition crossed the finishing line with more than 2 overs to spare and 8 wickets in hand.

Manager Matt Theedom said,”It was a little disappointing not to have performed to a higher standard against good opposition and on a good pitch, but credit must be given to Hampshire who out bowled and batted us on this occasion.  Hopefully we can turn the tables on them at the Taunton Festival in the re-match.”

Result:

Devon Under 11’s: 165-5 (M Mejner 86, J Degg 41).
Hampshire Under 11’s: 168-2

Hampshire won by 8 wickets.

Under 13’s Bounce Back With Victory Against Gwent

On a sticky, hot afternoon at Sandford CC the local Under 11’s won the toss again and had a bat.  Looking to put a good total on the board, Devon got off to a flyer with 11 off the first over!  After that things slowed up mainly due to some tight bowling from the Gwent attack but also some loose shots and less than impressive running between the wickets.  Had it not been for a quick fire 28 from Ollie Robinson coming in at 10 Devon would have struggled to make 130!

Earlier, most batters had got themselves in and established.  Ben Spieacha (33), Sam Taylor (24) and Isaac Windley (21) all getting past 20 but none going on to make a big score.  This was the difference between posted 180+ and ending the innings on 169 all out.  Had the tail not wagged and added 52, Devon would have posted a well below par total.

However, with runs in the bag and momentum shifted in our favour, the Devon bowlers set about defending 169.  In a similar fashion to Devon, Gwent left it until late in the innings to mount a charge with their number 7, Berry, hitting 44 not out to bring the visitors to within 14 runs at the close of play.  Earlier Gwent’s number 3, Archer, had also scored 44.

The Gwent innings was slowed by Tom Jeacock, Johnny Joseph, Ollie Robinson, Sam Carpenter & Elliot Adams.  All bowling straight and with good control in the middle part of the innings.  The wickets were shared around with Luke Jefferson & Jonty Walliker picking up 2 each.

Result:

Devon Under 11’s: 169 (B Sapiecha 33, O Robinson 28, S Taylor 24)
Gwent Under 11’s: 155-6 (J Walliker 2-35, L Jefferson 2-20)

Devon won by 14 runs

Devon Under 12’s Beat Gloucestershire In Low Scoring Game

Devon Under 12's entertained their Gloucestershire counterparts on a glorious summer's day at Barnstaple & Pilton CC. Batting first Devon subsided to 16-5 on a blameless pitch. It needed patient knocks from the middle and lower order to post any sort of total. Tom Simmons (21), Sam Read (25) and Ollie Hannam (29) provided some backbone to the score and Devon were eventually bowled out for 129 in the 36th over.

It needed a superb bowling and fielding performance to rescue the game. Captain Jack Moore, on his home ground, rotated his bowlers with skill and the Devon boys took wickets at regular intervals. Gloucestershire were eventually dismissed for 106, some 23 runs short of their target. Luke Medlock (3-10), Jack moore (2-15) and Ollie Pugsley (2-25) doing most of the damage.

Manager Nigel Ashplant said, “ We are still unbeaten this season but the side relies too much on the ability of the bowlers to dig then out of hole created by poor batting.”

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 129 all out. (O Hannam 29)

Gloucestershire Under 12’s 106 all out (L Meadlock 3-10, J Moore 2-15, O Pugsley 2-25)

Devon won by 23 runs.

Devon Under 14’s Beat Wiltshire Thanks To Szymanski’s Brilliant Innings and Lathwell’s Inspired Spell

A brilliant innings of 96 by Kazi Szymanski and 5 wickets from Jamie Lathwell saw Devon Under 14’s defeat Wiltshire by 149 runs. At 30-4 this outcome looked highly unlikely but a 95 run partnership by Szymanski and Jamie Khan (44) backed up by 27 from Sam Maunder allowed Devon to post 215-6 off their 45 overs. Opening the bowling Lathwell pitched the ball up and swung it and the Wiltshire batsman struggled to cope.24-7 and the game was virtually over and it was left to James Degg, called up from the Under 13’s, to apply the coup de grais with his off –spin as he took 3 wickets for just 5 runs.

Result:

Devon Under 14’s: 215-6 (K Szymanski 96*, J Khan 44)

Wiltshire Under 14’s: 66 all out (J Lathwell 5-15, J Degg 3-5)

Devon won by 149 runs

Devon Under 15’s Batting Fires At Last

Devon Under 15s batting as last kicked in as they defeated Wiltshire in their latest ECB Championship clash. Sidmouth's Harvey Sargent (62) and Paignton's Noah Wright (32) gave the home county an ideal start with a 75 first wicket partnership at Barton CC.

Plymouth's Joe Hagan-Burt (28) and Sargent then put on another 64 runs for the second wicket with Ottery St Mary all-rounder and skipper Billy Rudolph contributing further with a quick 21 as Devon were all out for 189 in the last of their 50 overs.

North Devon quickie Charlie Webb marked his debut with a three wicket haul and Cornwood spinner Matt Petherbridge again bowled tidily in his 2-26 10 wicket spell as Wiltshire were skittled out for 141 in the 46th over to give Devon a 48 run victory.

Result:

Devon Under 15’s:189 (Sargent 62, Wright 32, Hagan-Burt 28, Rudolph 1)

Wiltshire Under 15’s: 141 (Webb 3-31, Petherbridge 2-26).

Devon won by 48 runs.

Devon Under 15 Girls So Close Yet So Far

V

Somerset

It was a nail-biting finish for the Devon Under 15 Girls v Somerset match played at Wellington School on a very humid day with sunshine and showers.

Somerset won the toss and elected to bat. After an early tea due to a very heavy shower and with only 4 overs to bat Devon had almost bowled Somerset out. Wicket-takers for Devon were Steph Hutchins (7-0-29-3) along with two exciting run outs; Emily Dodds (4-0-16-2) and Captain Lauren Bowden (7-1-18-2). Unfortunately the 73 extras (57 of which were wides!) conceded by Devon would prove to be the significant difference between the two sides. Somerset finished their innings on 186-9 off their 40 overs.

Sadly Devon lost early wickets and were 28 for 4 in just 7 overs and it wasn't until Lauren Bowden (46) came to the crease that any significant runs were made. The fabulous partnership of 120 between Lauren Bowden and Lucy Walliker, making her highest ever score of 67, looked like it might just give Devon the edge. Their partnership had put the team in a very strong position. However some tight and accurate bowling in the last two overs from the home side saw Somerset only conceded 7 runs and left Devon agonisingly 8 runs short of a victory that would have secured their second win of the season. Devon ended their innings on 179-8

Result:

Somerset Under 15 Girls: 186-9 (S Hutchins 3-29)

Devon Under 15 Girls: 179-8 (L Walliker 67, L Bowden 46)

Somerset won by 8 runs

Devon Under 14’s Win Taunton Festival

The Devon Under 14’s won their 5 day festival held at King’s School Taunton with a nail biting 5 points gained in their last game against Middlesex to come out on top of their league by just 1 point.

Opener Tom Lammonby was the star of the show in their first game against Shropshire as he compiled a classy 123. A stand of 138 with Ashley Causey (50) and middle order runs from Kazi Szymanski (32) and Mike Cooper (31) saw Devon pile up an imposing 339. Ben Abrahams then took 5-45 as Shropshire were bowled out 153 runs short.

Day 2 was a much closer contest against Yorkshire. Batting first the White Rose county scored 193 all out. Pick of the bowlers was leg spinner Leon Horn who took 3-33. At 75-5 the game was in the balance and it took a fantastic innings of 60 from Mike Cooper to get Devon near. When he fell 23 was still needed which Leon Horn (13 not out) and Tom Williams (16 not out) calmly compiled with to see their team home with 3 overs to spare.

Wales were next up. The Principality batted first and scored 273-5 off their 50 overs. Most of the Devon batsmen made good starts but no one went on to score the big total that was required with Kazi Szymanski top scoring with 42. Falling behind the run rate Devon managed to bat out for a comfortable draw, finishing on 191-5.

Devon’s penultimate opponents were Derbyshire. Once again Devon found batting first preferable as the again amassed an impressive total in excess of 300. Ashley Causey top scored with 57 as all of the top 6 batsmen scored 23 or more. At 131-1 Derbyshire were in with a shout of victory but 2 wickets in an over from Jamie Lathwell changed the dynamic of the innings. Leon Horn then bamboozled the middle and lower order with his mixture of leg breaks and googlies to produce his best county figures ever of 6-36 as Derbyshire were bowled out for exactly 200 to leave Devon victors by 105 runs.

Devon’s last opponents were Middlesex. 7 Points would see Devon the overall winners of the festival if Wales got their full 20 points in their last game. Put in to bat Devon struggled against accurate Middlesex bowling and only Jack Gibbs (29) and Tom Williams (26) scored more than 17. All out for 171 meant that Devon needed to take 6 wickets to secure enough points to be overall winners as Wales could only achieve a maximum of 18 . With Middlesex on 158-5 Ben Abrahams bowled the 34th over and his third ball was skied to extra cover where Captain Ashley Causey took the catch and the team and parents erupted in joyous celebration as Devon are confirmed Festival Champions. Eventually Middlesex passed Devon’s total with 3 wickets in hand with 22 balls to spare.

Manager Jon Mears said, “It was a fantastic week with many outstanding individual performances but most of all it was a brilliant team effort from everyone involved. I am also delighted that Tom Lammonby has been selected to represent the West of England at the Bunbury Festival.”

Poor Batting Main Reason For Devon Under 15’s Loss To Gloucestershire

Poor batting proved to be Devon Under 15’s downfall as they were beaten by Gloucester in their latest ECB Championship game.

Devon won the toss and decided to bat at Bedminster CC. Sidmouth opener Harvey Sargent notched 23 at the top of the order and Plymouth all-rounder Joe Hagan-Burt contributed with 34. Exmouth's Finlay Marks showed how it should be done with an undefeated 43 but he ran out of partners once Jack Lockwood (31) went and Devon could only manage a total of 166 from their reduced 40 overs.

Ottery St Mary opening bowler Ollie Reed got an early breakthrough but a 114-second wicket partnership, with an impressive 81 from Gloucester's Hooper, had the game in the bag for the home county.  Paignton's Harry Ward and Cornwood's Matt Petherbridge took two wickets apiece with Petherbridge conceding just 17 runs from his nine overs.

Result:

Devon Under 15’s: 166 (Sargent 23, Hagan-Burt 34, Marks 43no, Lockwood 31), Gloucester Under 15’s: 170-5 (Ward 2-40, Petherbridge 2-17)

Devon lost by five wickets.

Devon Under 11’s Win 4 Out Of 4 with Victory Over Wiltshire.

On a hot day at Blundell's the unbeaten Devon Under 11 team faced their next challenge against Wiltshire. Wiltshire won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bat first.  A steady start was made by the Wiltshire openers who put on 36 for the first wicket in the 13th over.  Sam Jefferson came on first change and opened the gate with some very impressive seam bowling. He removed both openers who ended up the main run scorers for Wiltshire. Once they went spin was introduced and again Devon cashed in with some quality spin bowling. 5 wickets quickly perished and the innings ended in the 34th over as Wiltshire were all out for only 112. Devon set about this below par target with positive shots from the first over which went for 11 thanks a magnificent drive from opener Joe DuGay.  Early wickets fell but boundaries were being hit regularly as Devon raced to their target in only the 19th over. Elliot Hamilton's 30 not out off 11 balls was breathtaking and the highlight of the Devon reply. Devon won the match by 5 wickets. This victory made it 4 wins from 4 for the Devon Under 11’s so far this season.

Result:

Wiltshire Under 11’s: 112 all out 33.3overs (J Farley 3-14, J Ford 2-16,S Jefferson 2-23)
Devon Under 11’s: 113-5 in 20 overs (E Hamilton 30*)

Devon Under 11’s won by 5 wickets.

Devon Under 17’s Lose To Somerset in their 2 Day Game Due To A Poor First Innings Batting Display

The Devon Under 17’s lost to Somerset on first innings scores due to a poor batting effort in their first innings. On a blameless pitch Devon could only muster 163 all out in the 52nd over against some good quality Somerset bowling. After a solid start of 36 from openers Matt Skeemer (21) and Harvey Sargent (45) Devon’s middle order failed to fire and the score was soon 91-6. A 7th wicket partnership of 50 between Ollie Dawe (29) and Reid Mawdsley (36*) took the score to 141 but the tail failed to wag and Devon were bundled out for only 22 runs more.

Somerset found batting much easier and despite an herculean effort from captain Dom Bess, who bowled 39 overs, taking 2-108, Somerset batted sensibly, if a little slowly, to pile up a commanding score of 331-7, only obtaining their 300th run and maximum batting point in the 101st over. Left with 52 overs to bat in their 2nd innings Devon put in a much better display finishing on 172-2 with unbeaten half-centuries for Sargent (52*) and Bess (67*).

Result:

Devon Under 17’s 1st  innings: 163 all out (H Sargent 45, R Mawdsley 36*)

Somerset Under 17’s 1st innings: 331-7 (D Bess 2-108, M Skeemer 2-33)

Devon Under 17’s 2nd innings: 172-2 (D Bess 67*, H Sargent 52*)

Somerset won on 1st innings. Somerset 18 points Devon 6 points.

Brilliant First Win of the Season for Devon Under 15 Girls  against Cornwall!

The Devon Under 15 Girls played their third game of the season against Cornwall at Duloe CC hoping to break their losing run. Devon Skipper Lauren Bowden won the toss for the first time this season, and put Cornwall into bat under grey skies and in rather damp conditions.

Lauren Bowden (6-2-7-1) and Carmen Clements (6-0-23-2) opened the bowling with a stunning display of tight bowling. The first wicket off Carmen's bowling came in the 4th over with the Cornish score on 4. The second, caught off her bowling by keeper Immy Beasley, left Cornwall on 7-2 in the 6th over. Wickets continued to fall for Cornwall as the drizzle got heavier. In the 27th over the covers were brought on and due to the delay the overs were reduced to 36.  Cornwall batted through for a total of 82-8, Ellie Ingham-Hill  was Devon’s most successful bowler with excellent figures of  8-2-17-3.  After a break in the weather and tea taken, Devon began their innings and so did the unremitting drizzle and rain! Opener Olivia Jones, on her birthday, batted steadily for her 19, as did Ellie Ingham-Hill (17). Though wickets fell at the hands of Cornwall's Sophie MacKenzie (6-2-15-2) and Bronwyn Casterton (3.3-0-13-2), Devon reached their total of 83-6 in just 19.3 overs to record their first win of the season.

Result:

Cornwall Under 15 Girls: 82-8 (E Ingham-Hill 3-17)

Devon Under 15 Girls: 83-6 (O Jones 19, E Ingham-Hill 17)

Devon Under 15 Girls won by 4 wickets.

DuGay Continues Good Form As Devon Under 11’s Beat Somerset

Devon Under 11’s won the toss and chose to bat on a hard, dry track which paid off as openers Joe DuGay(56) and Tim Doulton(34) put on 106 for the opening stand  in 20 overs  before DuGay was brilliantly caught and bowled.  This was DuGay’s second successive score of 56 in last 2 Devon matches. Devon continued to pile on the pressure and despite losing frequent wickets runs were added easily. Taylor Ingham-Hill hit a very quick 21* to ensure Devon reached a defendable total of 196-7.
After tea captain Eddie Rudolph felt spin was the way forward and after 8 overs of seam that was the way ahead. 28 overs of spin followed and with that 8 wickets fell. Stand out performances came from Eddie Smout-Cooper(8-0-25-4) and Timothy Doulton(8-1-29-1) who were fantastic and tied the Somerset batsman down.  Somerset managed to get to 125-8 but ended up falling short by 71 runs.

Result:

Devon Under 11’s: 196-7 (J DuGay 56, T Dalton 34, T Ingham-Hill 21*)

Somerset Under 11’s: 125-8 (E Smout-Cooper 4-25)

Devon Under 11’s won by71 runs.

Devon Under 12’s Beat Gwent In Low Scoring Contest

After a two week break, the  Devon Under 12's played Gwent at Monmouth, and continued their winning run in a low scoring contest. Batting first Devon were grateful to Ollie Hannam (39) and Sam Read (21) who were the only scorers of note in a below par 123. Devon found scoring difficult against a predominantly spin attack.

Gwent found the going even tougher against the four prong spin assault of Max Hancock (4-5), ably supported by Ollie Pugsley, Sam Read and James Horler. The bowlers were backed up by some high class catching as Gwent were dismissed for just 63.

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 123 (O Hannam 39, S Read 21)

Gwent Under 12’s: 63 all out ( M Hancock 4-5, O Pugsley 2-11)

Devon won by 60 runs.

Devon Under 15 Girls Find Hampshire Too Strong

The Devon Under 15 Girls still trying to find winning form in the National
Competition  as they are yet to win a match this season in their
Performance group.

Devon were put into bat by the Hampshire girls at North Molton CC and were soon 15-3 off 6 overs. It wasn't until lower order batters: Carmen Clements (13) and Libby McNally (27) came into bat that runs began to be made but Devon struggled to bat their full 40 overs and were bowled out for a disappointing total of 95 with 11 overs still to go. A  wicket second ball by Lauren Bowden gave the Devon girls hope and a great run out by Steph Hutchins soon after saw the visitors on 15-2. However the 3rd wicket partnership of Katie George (15) and Alice Monaghan (33no) took Hampshire quickly to victory in the 26th over as Hampshire ran out easy winners by 7 wickets.

Result:

Devon Under 15 Girls: 95 all out

Hampshire Under 15 Girls: 96-3

Hampshire won by 7 wickets

So Close Yet So Far For Devon Under 15 Boys

It was a case of so near yet so far for Devon Under15’s after they went down by just seven runs in their latest ECB Championship game against Gloucester.

Gloucester were put in as clouds gathered around the ground at Seaton Cricket Club. The game was reduced to 43 overs a side after a couple of showers but the visitors  still ended up on a competative 172 all out. Ottery St Mary seamer Ollie Reed finished with 4-26 and home debutant Tom Andrew, from Abbotskerwell CC, contributed with a 2-22 spell.

Sidmouth opener Harvey Sargent guided Devon along at the start of the innings with a patient 34, but Devon's middle order lost their way in the run chase and victory looked a long way off. Exmouth's Finlay Marks (38) and Andrew (29) had other ideas  and suddenly Devon were in with a slim chance. But Marks went and then Andrew was caught as Devon were bowled out for 165.

Manager Jim Parker said: "It was obviously disappointing to lose. I think we let them get 20 to 30 runs too many and we needed more of a contribution from the middle order. But there were some positives - Ollie bowled really well and it was pleasing to see Tom do brilliantly with the bat and ball. Finlay also showed some of the fighting spirit we need as a team if we are turn these close games into wins."

Result:

 Gloucester Under 15’s: 172(Reed 4-26; Andrew 2-22)

 Devon Under 15’s:  165(Sargent 34, Marks 38, Andrew 29).

 Devon lost by seven runs.

Devon Under 10’s Mid season Report:

Played 3 Won 2 Lost 1

Devon Under 10’s v Hampshire Under 10’s

Devon hosted Hampshire for the inaugural county youth fixture to be played at University of Exeter’s Topsham Sports Ground.  The excellent facilities provided a backdrop for a game of real quality against strong opposition.  Hampshire batted first amassing 183-7, with many players contributing along the way.  Captain, Archie Farkins (2-28) and Cameron Ford (2-24) were the pick of a bowling performance that conceded a few too many extras.  In response Devon built gradually and were put in a fine position by opener Reuben Windley (32) and Rory Medlock (53).  Devon came up agonisingly short despite a bright and breezy 17 from Sammy Broomhead trying to win the game.  Needing 6 from the last ball Devon ended up on 181-7.  A fine game of cricket and a credit to both sides.

Result:

Hampshire Under 10’s: 183 for 7 (A Farkins 2-28, C Ford 2-24)
Devon Under 10’s: 181 for 7 (R Medlock 53, R Windley 32, extras 44)

Devon lost by 2 runs

Devon Under 10’s v Cornwall Under 10’s

Despite rain in the air Devon managed to play a full game against Cornwall at Exeter School.  Electing to bat first Devon saw a host of early wickets tumble and found themselves 66-7 with plenty of overs remaining.  A fine 70 run partnership between Ollie Smith (44) and Joe Farmer (15*) helped Devon to a total of 141-8 that looked above par on a green wicket.  In the Cornish reply wickets fell regularly and were shared equally amongst Eddie Butler (2-8), Matt Jeacock (2-22) and Archie Farkins (2-9). Cornwall rallied to 93 all out meaning the local bragging rights stayed on the Devon side of the Tamar for the 2014 season.

Result:
Devon Under 10’s: 141 for 8 (R Windley 22, O Smith 42, extras 35,)
Cornwall Under 10’s:  93 all out (E Butler 2-8, M Jeacock 2-22, A Farkins 2-9)

Devon won by 48 runs

Devon Under 10’s v Isle of Wight Under 10’s

The Isle of Wight Under 10’s visited Devon a little weary eyed after a 5.30 alarm call before boarding the ferry.  The visitors won the toss and decided to blow off the cobwebs in the field.  Eddie Butler (22) and Jake Pascoe (45), both under 9’s and playing a year early, dominated the opening exchanges.  A middle order flurry of wickets slowed proceedings until skipper Archie Farkins (27) helped Devon to a strong total of 192-7.  A fine spell of bowling during the Isle of Wight response from  the pace duo of Joe Farmer (3-15) and Farkins (2-6) dented the visitors hopes.  However contributions down the order helped them to a respectable 101 all out to make the long trip a worthwhile exercise.

Result:

Devon Under 10’s: 192 for 7 (J Pascoe 45, A Farkins 27,E Butler 22)
Isle of Wight Under 10’s: 101 all out (A Farkins 2-6, J Farmer 3-15)

Devon won by 91 runs

Brilliant Fielding Performance Backs Up Szymanski’s Fifty and Parker’s 5 Wickets

Devon Under 14’s took on Somerset Under 14’s at Thorverton CC and came away convincing winners by 67 runs after a fabulous fielding performance that saw some breathtaking catches and a brilliant run out. Batting first on a difficult pitch Devon did well to score 189-6 off their 45 overs. Top run scorer was Kaz Szymanski who hit well constructed 60 not out coming in at number 5 with the score on 47-3. His partnership of 95 with Jamie Khan, who scored 39, was the main reason for Devon’s challenging total. Somerset were soon in trouble at 3-2 thanks to a brilliant run out by Leon Horn and a stunning catch by Mike Cooper at short mid-wicket. Cooper then followed that up with an even better one running back at short mid-on to take a one handed catch as it came over his shoulder. Next ball Matthew Parker was on a hat-trick as he trapped Somerset’s number 5 LBW first ball. 21-4 was soon 39-7 and the game was in the bag. Somerset rallied as Court and Fisher put on 65 for the 8th wicket until Parker came back to take his 5th wicket thanks to another top drawer catch from Cooper. Somerset were eventually bowled out for 122 in the 39th over.

Manager Jon Mears was delighted by his team’s fielding display. “Our fielding display was superb. It showed great effort and team spirit and was great to see.”

Result:

Devon Under’s 14’s: 189-6 (Szymanski 60*, Khan 39, Lammonby 28)

Somerset Under 14’s: 122 all out (M Parker 5-27)

Devon won by 67 runs

Devon Under 11’s Too Strong For Dorset

Devon Under 10’s travelled to Weymouth to take on Dorset Under 10’s on a dry, sunny day and were too strong for their hosts as they ran out easy 9 wicket winners. Dorset won the toss and chose to bat. Devon bowled a good line and length for the first 10 overs and stopped Dorset getting off to flyer. Pick of the bowlers was Jack Ford who bowled 8 overs for only 2 runs taking 1 wicket. Dorset struggled against all of the Devon bowling and could only limp to 92-9 off their 40 overs. Devon in reply were much more positive and led by a brilliant innings from Joseph DuGay (56*) knocked off the total in just 16 overs for the loss 1 wicket.

Result:

Dorset Under 10’s: 92-9

Devon Under 10’s: 93-1 (J DuGay 56*)

Devon won by 9 wickets

Devon Under 15 Girls v Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls

Devon Under 15 girls first Championship match of the 2014 season was held at Torquay CC against Gloucestershire. After two glorious weeks of sunshine the weather decided to change and bring with it some very heavy down pours and thunderstorms! After a very lengthy wait for a break in the weather and more time for the groundsman to get the pitch to be mopped up and prepared Devon eventually lost the toss and were invited to bat just before 3.30pm with a reduced game of 30 overs per side to be played.

A steady and accurate bowling attack from Gloucestershire saw the first Devon wicket fall with the score on 14. Although there was some steadying of the innings by Steph Hutchins (28) there was a collapse from Devon’s middle order. Coming in at number 10 Imogen Beasley began her innings well, scoring a quick 17, which included 3 boundaries in just three overs but she was bowled soon after and Devon finished on just 100-9 for their 30 overs.

Tight and accurate bowling for Devon was needed for them to have had a chance at beating their opponents. Though this did come from Jessie Jones (6-1-15-1) and Lauren Bowden (6-1-10-1) unfortunately there was some rather wayward bowling at times and Devon relinquished far too many extras: 34 in total, 21 of which were wides. Devon’s keeper, Imogen Beasley, took two great catches to dismiss the Gloucestershire openers but Emily Wilkins (34) proved more difficult to remove before Devon captain Jess Jones trapped her lbw. The runs continued to flow and Gloucestershire sealed victory in the 26th over with only 3 wickets down for their first win of the season.

Result:

Devon Under 15 Girls: 100-9 ( S Hutchins 28)

Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls: 101-3

Gloucestershire won by 7 wickets

Devon Under 10’s Impressive against Isle Of Wight

Batting first Devon racked up an impressive 192-7 with Jake Pascoe scoring an excellent 45, ably supported by a well constructed 27 from Archie Farkins. The Islanders struggled against the Devon bowling, especially Joe Farmer who took 3-15 off his 5 overs. The visitors were all out for 101 to leave Devon winners by 91 runs.

Result:

Devon Under 10’s: 192-7 (J Pascoe 45, A Farkins 27, Extras 54)

Isle of Wight Under 10’s: 101 all out. (J Farmer 3-15)

Devon won by 91 runs

Fantastic Start for the Under 15 Boys in their ECB Competition

Devon Under 15’s got their ECB Championship campaign off to a cracking and perfect start with a 10-wicket win at the Isle of Wight.

The home county won the toss and decided to bat at the impressive Newclose CC county ground but they were made to regret the decision as tight and straight bowling supported by some good fielding saw them skittled out for just 66.

Left arm spinner, Matthew Petherbridge with 4-13 from 10 overs and Alex Hannam who returned figures of 3-16 from 5.1 bowled extremely well as the Isle of Wight were all out in the 31st over.

Openers Joe Hagan-Burt (32no) and Harvey Sargent (28no) made light work of the run chase, leading the visitors over the winning line in only the 16th over.

Devon manager Jim Parker said: "It was a fantastic start to the season and we couldn't have asked the boys for more. The challenge is continuing with this kind of form against Gloucester."

Result:

 Isle of Wight: 66 all out (M Petherbridge 4-13, A Hannam 3-16)

 Devon: 67-0 (J Hagan-Burt 32no, H Sargent 28no).

 Devon won by 10 wickets.

Devon Under 14’s Continue Their Great Start to the Season

Whimple CC hosted the Devon Under 14’s as they took on their Dorset rivals on a beautifully hot summer’s day. Bowling first Devon put on a good performance with all of the bowlers bowling well, backed up by enthusiastic fielding. With a good mix of quick bowling and spinDorset found it hard to score at a decent run rate and limped to 141-9 off 45 overs. Pick of the spinners was Chris Yabsley who took 2 wickets and only went for 10 runs off his 9 overs. A fantastic effort!.

Knocking off the runs wasn’t a problem as Tom Lammonby (28) and Ashley Causey (51 not out) put on 52 for the first wicket at a good rate. Kazi Szymanski came in at number 5 to hit a quick fire 39 to see Devon romp home to victory with more than 15 overs to spare.

Coach Nick Watkin was delighted with his team’s performance but warned that there will be tougher games ahead. “We bowled well at the start and our spinners were good, especially  ChrisYabsley but we took our foot off the accelerator in the last few overs which allowed them to score 20-30 more than they should have. It was very pleasing to see the confidence of our batsmen as they knocked off the runs very confidently”

Result

Dorset: 141-9 ( C Yabsley 2-10, T Williams 2-27)

Devon: 144-3 (A Causey 51*, K Szymanski 39*)

Devon won by 7 wickets

Devon Under 11’s Impress With Win Against Cornwall

Blundells School was the venue for Devon Under 11’s game against Cornwall on what turned out to be a blistering hot day.

Devon won toss and decided to bat. However due to some good line and length bowling Devon found themselves 26-3 off 10 overs. Tim Doulton (19) and Jack Ford (48) looked to repair the situation with a 47 run partnership before Dalton departed first ball after drinks. This brought left handed Isaac Staig (54*) to the crease who accelerated the run rate.  Devon went from 67-4 after 20 to 180-6 after their allotted 40 overs.  Manager Jason Degg thought that this was a magnificent example of partnership building from debutant Staig and Ford as they dug in after a tricky start before accelerating superbly.

After an impressive tea (most important at Under 11’s!) Devon opened up with Sam Jefferson and Janes Tyson who both got a wicket each in their first 3 overs, This put Cornwall on the back foot, form which they never recovered.  At the halfway stage their closest neighbours had reached only 54-3 off 20 overs. In the 21st over Tim Doulton started his 8 over spell of leg-spin which turned out to be the game winner. He finished with 5 wickets off his 8 overs as Cornwall were finally bowled out for 97.

Devon Under 11 manager Jason Degg was really impressed with the debutants performances, “To get a chance- less 54 not out from Isaac and a 5 wickets from Tim is really exciting  to see as they were both playing their first games at this level.”

Result:

Devon: 180-6 (I Staig 54*,J Ford 48,T Doulton 19)
Cornwall: 97 all out (T Doulton 5-20)
Devon won by 83 runs.

Devon Under 12’s Perfect Record Still Intact

Devon Under 12's maintained their unbeaten record, with a 5 wicket victory over visting Hampshire at Axminster. Hampshire won the toss and batted. After scoring 54-1 from their first 14 overs, they looked set to post an imposing score.  The introduction of spinners Max Hancock (8-1-15-1) and Ollie Pugsley (8-0-27-2) slowed the run rate and two late wickets for Abraham Kopparambil (2-0-11-2), including top scorer Fraser Middleton (58), restricted Hampshire to 148-7 from their 40 overs which was an excellent fight back from the Devon bowlers. Devon started well with a 51 run opening partnership between Sam Read (18) and James Horler (38). After their dismissals there were useful contributions from Luke Medlock (26) and Jack Moore (20) before Max Hancock 16* and Abraham Kopparambil 17* saw the Devon boys home with 5 overs and 5 wickets in hand.

Manager Nigel Ashplant reflected. "The team had threatened a performance like this in their previous games. Today, they put all aspects of their game together, and this was the best all round performance from the team so far".

Result:

Hampshire: 148-7(O Pugsley 2-28, A Kopparambil 2-11)

Devon 151-5: (J Horler 38, L Medlock 26, J Moore 20)

Devon won by 5 wickets.

Devon Under 14’s Easily Beat Local Rivals

A commanding opening stand of 111 by Devon’s openers Tom Lammonby (55) and Ashley Causey (71) set up a convincing 61 victory over their nearest rivals Cornwall. Batting first Devon totalled an impressive 242-9 off their 45 overs. Lammonby and Causey set off at break-neck speed with 73 coming off the first 10 overs. Lammonby was first to his half century but followed soon after to a good catch at square leg. Once their partnership was broken the scoring rate slowed as Cornwall’s Alasdair Faull bowled well to take 6-30. Next best score was Sam Maunder’s 28.  Once Kazi Szymanski had knocked over Cornwall’s opener and number 3 Cornwall struggled to score against the pace of Matthew Parker and the spin of Chris Yabsley and were soon behind the asking rate. Alex Bone batted very well to top score with 74 before he was run out by Leon Horn but by then the asking rate was too much for Cornwall to cause any worries to the Devon team as they finished 61 runs short on 181-6.

Devon Manger Jon Mears said, “It was a very pleasing performance with a number of excellent individual achievements. Most pleasing was the intensity and quality of our fielding as well as the superb opening partnership”

Devon Under 12’s Tremendous Start to Their Season

Devon Under 12’s have started their season very impressively, with four wins from their first four games.

Against Wales they were dismissed for only 64 but produced a superb bowling and fielding performance to restrict the Principality to 61 all out.  Lustleigh’s debutant Ollie Blakeman did most of the damage with 4-19 in a devastating opening spell.

Blakeman was the key man again when Berkshire were bowled out for 107, this time taking 4-13. Devon cruised to a 6 wicket victory with newcomers James Horler (45) and Abraham Kopparambil (20) setting the platform. Skipper Jack Moore then finished the job with a fine 27 not out.

Cornwall felt the power of the Devon batting line up as they amassed 231-7 off 40 overs. Main contributors were Freddie Ford (30), Louis Morison (41) and Ollie Hannam (35), followed by a whirlwind 60 from Jack Moore. Cornwall were never up with the run rate and ended 89 runs short.

The game against Somerset was a nail biter with all results possible right to the end. Devon won a thrilling contest by securing a run out off the last ball, to win by one run. Bating first Devon reached 156-8 with Skipper Moore again leading the way with 49. There were useful contributions from Horler (23) and Sam Read (28) but it was Read’s contribution with the ball that made the main difference. His off spin returning figures of 4- 10 from 8 overs. Max Hancock  ably supported him with 3-33.

 Results:

Devon Under 12’s: 64 all out.

 Wales Under 12’s: 61 all out (O Blakeman 4-19).

Weather Frustrates Devon Under 13’s

Having inserted Wiltshire at the Chagford’s beautiful ground, Devon Under 13’s were hoping for a start like the Gloucestershire match where they reduced the opposition to 13 for 5.   The great thing about cricket is that no two matches are alike!  The Wiltshire openers batted well putting any bad ball away to the boundary.  However the pitch had the look and feel that the batters would never really feel like they were 'in'!  This proved to be the case.  Wickets fell with 24, 44, 72 and 84 on the board, proving it was hard to create partnerships.

Devon bowled well, however the ground fielding will need to improve as there were plenty of fumbles

With Wiltshire on 99 for 4 with 15 overs remaining, it could have been a good match, however it wasn't to be. Two prolonged, heavy showers and an early tea taken, the umpires confirmed the inevitable.  James Onley-Gregson (1-17), Oliver Robinson (1-37) and James Degg (2-14) taking the wickets.

Result:

Wiltshire: 99-4 (Degg 2-14)

Match abandoned-Rain

Devon Under 15’s Have Mixed Fortunes in their Warm Up Games

Devon Under 15s have played two friendlies in their build-up to the ECB County Championship campaign.

They first went to Blundells School and came away with a comfortable seven wicket victory.

Blundell’s won the toss and opted to bat first finishing on 181-8 from their 40 overs.

Matt Petherbridge (3 for 8) andf Joe Hagan-Burt (2 for 4) were the main wicket-takers for Devon.

Noah Wright (36) and Tom Andrew (44) steered Devon towards the winning total but it was Harry Ward who top scored with an undefeated 52.

Devon then travelled to Truro CC to take on Cornwall.

Ben Phillips (35) and Billy Rudolph (35) were early run-getters. Jim Shepherd then contributed with a battling knock - he was run out just one run short of his half century - as Devon scored 186 from 40 overs.

Cornwall timed their innings to perfection and ran out comfortable winners by six wickets. Ollie Reed took 2-28 for Devon.

Devon are off to the Isle of Wight in just over two weeks for their first ECB challenge.

SCOREBOARD

Blundells 181-8 (Maunder 75no, Phillips 36; Petherbridge 3-8, Hagan-Burt 2-4); Devon 183-3 (Wright 36, Andrew 44, Ward 52no).

Devon won by seven wickets.

Devon 186 (Phillips 35, Rudolph 35, Shepherd 49);

Cornwall 187-4 (Reed 2-28).

Devon lost by six wickets.

Devon Under 10’s Thrashed by Oxfordshire

Devon Under 10’s had a day to forget against Oxfordshire as they were skittled out for only 29 in less than 13 overs chasing Oxfordshire’s 145-8. The day started quite well with 2 wickets for J. Farmer and C.Ford but 27 wides didn’t help the cause. With only F. O’Connell(11) making double figures it was a very disappointing batting display against some fine bowling Oxfordshire’s from Z Lion- Cachet who took 6-10 in just 4 overs with all of his victims being bowled.

Scoreboard:

Oxfordshire: 145-8 ( J Farmer 2-33, C Ford 2-17)

Devon: 29 all out.

Devon lost by 116 runs.

Devon Under 13’s Start Season with a Convincing Win Against Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire Under 13’s were Devon’s first county fixture of the summer following a rain off the previous week away at Cornwall.

Playing at the relatively new venue of Filham Park, home of Ivybridge CC, Gloucestershire elected to bat after winning the toss.  A decision that Devon were happy with considering they felt the pitch may favour bowling first.  Within a very short space of time Gloucestershire's decision appeared to be less then prudent as they were reduced to 13 for 5 with some excellent swing and seam bowling from Jonty Walliker (3 for 18) and James Onley-Gregson (1 for 24).  Onley-Gregson also produced an outstanding run out with a diving stop on the boundary and bullet throw to Sam Taylor who quickly whipped the bails off!

At 49 for 8 it looked like an early tea, but a spirited fight back from Gloucestershire's number 8 batsman, who hit a fine 52 not out, helped his team reach 117 before they lost their final wicket. Luke Jefferson picked up 3 for 28, including a wicket with his first delivery in County cricket!

117 didn't ever look like enough on a good pitch even though Devon lost their first wicket with only 1 on the board.  Partnerships between Max Mejner (15), James Degg (24) and Ben Sapiecha (46) broke the back of the innings.  20 not out from Sam Carpenter and a boundary from Isaac Windley finished of the match with exactly 10 overs to spare.  Sapiecha took the game away from the opposition with some good hard hitting and then cleverly hitting singles into gaps.

Manager Matt Theedom said “It was a good winning start to the 2014 summer with some good individual performances”.

Gloucestershire 117 (J Walliker 3-18, L Jefferson 3-28).
Devon 119-4
 (B Sapiecha 46, J Degg 24, S Carpenter 20*).

Devon Under 14’s Easily Beat Gwent.

Devon Under 14’s took on their Gwent counterparts at Blundells and came away easy victors with a 153 run victory. Batting first Devon scored an impressive 273-5. Opener Tom Lammonby top scored with 87, which was even more impressive considering he batted most of the innings with back pain. He was well supported by Kaz Szymanski (43), Sam Maunder (34), Michael Cooper (30) and Ashley Causey (28).Matt Parker was the pick of the Devon bowlers taking 3-16 as Gwent were all out for 120.

Devon 273-5 (T Lammonby 87, K Szymanski,43)

Gwent 120 all out (M Parker 3-16)

Devon won by 153 runs

Brilliant Devon Under 17 Girls Win ECB T20 Competition

The Devon Girls Under17 team, led by Cait O’Keefe, won their ECB T20 Performance Group competition at Uphill Castle Cricket Club in Somerset on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th May.

Devon were drawn in a group with Somerset and Hampshire for the 2-day ‘round robin’ competition.

The Devon Girls laid down an early marker for the season in the first game by restricting Somerset to only 65 from their 20 overs with a disciplined bowling and fielding performance (4 catches and 3 run outs). Cait O’Keefe and Sophie Mackenzie powered to the total in only the 13th over to secure a 10 wicket victory.

-          Batting first in their second game against Hampshire Devon openers Cait O’Keefe and Ali Kelly put on 31 in the first 4 overs. Sophie Mackenzie batting at 7 providing the a finish with 38 off only 18 balls to set an imposing total of 122. An even better performance in the field saw Hampshire restricted to only 57 in their 20 overs to set up a 65 run victory. 85 dot balls, 5 catches and 1 stumping showed how dominant Devon were.

-          Due to heavy overnight rain the two games on day 2 were reduced to 10 overs per side.

-          The return game against Somerset saw much improved Somerset team and a below par batting performance from Devon who only posted 69 thanks mainly to the prolific Sophie Mackenzie who smashed 35 in just 22 balls, including 2 sixes. Somerset started their chase well and were up with the run rate after 7 overs. Overs 8 and 9 slowed the rate and meant Somerset required 13 from the last over. Somerset scored 12, thanks to a couple of errors in the field to set up a Super Over! Millie Squire bowled a superb 6 balls to restrict the hosts to only 4. Devon safely completed victory by scoring 7.

-          Again Devon struggled against improved opponents in their last game and a poor score of 49 was posted against Hampshire. The only highlight being Ali Kelly’s 17. Hampshire batted sensibly to reach 28-3 after 7 overs to set up a big finish. However, Devon really upped their game and closed it out by only allowing another 8 runs to be scored in the last 3 overs following a superb bowling and fielding display to record 4 wins out of 4 to run out convincing winners of the competition.

-          T20 Squad: Cait O’Keefe (Capt), Ali Kelly (WK), Stacey Maskelyne (WK), Milly Squire, Annabel Squire, Emma Jackman, Heather Edworthy, Jemma Horton, Gemma Lancaster, Sophie Mackenzie, Lydia Clements and Lily Helston.

-          Devon now look to complete a ‘double’ by winning the ECB National County Championship. Their first match is on Thursday 26th June against Wales at Whimple Cricket Club

Day 1 Scores (20 overs per side):

Somerset 65 – 7 (Gemma Lancaster 4-0-2-15)

2013 Season

Devon Under 11’s at Kings Taunton Festival

Day 1 v Buckinghamshire

Bucks won the toss and decided to bat first. The weather was set fine for the day and turned out to be glorious all week.
Tom and Alfie opened the bowling for Devon and had to wait 8 overs for their first Festival wicket which came from the captain himself, Jack. Max was also brought into the attack early and due to some really good bowling Bucks found themselves on just 33-1 after 15. Due to spin being a good ploy, Jack introduced Ollie Pugsley into the attack and the squeeze for runs continued. Max got the next wicket in his 5th over and Bucks lost 2 quickly to left armed Cole.
At 30 overs Bucks were 79-4 and Devon looked to have the edge in the first 2 sessions. Luke came into the attack and took 2 quick wickets to send Bucks into a lunch break on 106-7 with 5 overs to bat.
Jack bowled the first over back and what an over it was, 4 balls were bowled and the last 3 wickets were all cleaned bowl to wrap up the innings for Bucks at 106.  An incredible display of pitched up Yorker length bowling!
Craig Overton popped in to support and witnessed a cracking display of batting from Devon.
Sam and Luke opened up and Sam went for a duck in the first over which brought in Jack. Luke and Jack smashed their way through the Bucks total in just 23 overs resulting with Luke getting a half century.
This was a fantastic start to the campaign but wonderful to realise the importance of bowling straight.

Result:

Bucks 106 (Jack 6.4-3-9-4,Cole 5-1-11-3)

Devon 108-1 (Luke 52*,Jack 49*)

Day 2 v Cheshire

The long walk to pitch 6 to face Cheshire was again made in bright sunshine.  Devon won the toss and decided to field. Given the momentum from Monday, Devon made another great start and removed a Cheshire opener with the fourth ball of the innings courtesy of Tom. He bagged a second in his fourth over and a third in his fifth over.  This was added to by Jack who got 2 wickets in 2 overs leaving Cheshire 42-5 at first drinks - (15 overs). Spinners Max and Ollie joined in before Tom added another to his tally finishing the innings in the 35th over.
Cheshire reached 112.
Freddie and Luke faced 4 overs for 11-0 before lunch was taken.
After lunch they both hit unbeaten 50's and playing some incredible cricket shots all around the ground. The total was reached in just 19.2 overs and was a spectacle for all supporters that day.

Result:

Cheshire 112 (Tom  8.5-3-21-4,Jack 7-2-29-2,Ollie P 4-1-16-2)

Devon 113-0 (Luke 51*,Freddie 54*)

Day 3 v Wales

Devon's only international of the season would take place on day 3 and be on Kings show pitch. Wales won the toss and asked Devon to bat. Openers Luke and Sam walked to the middle to get Devon a good start.  Luke hit 3 boundaries  the first 4 balls of the innings which got the Devon hopes up.  Sam first scoring shot was also a four and the scoreboard was ticking along nicely until Luke got caught at point in the 3rd over for a very quick 14. Jack came in at 3 and hit an early boundary but was also out very early and this brought Archie to the crease who was bowled first ball. Sam soon followed and Devon reached drinks 58-5.
Alfie and Ollie H dug in to try and rescue the situation.  Ollie H soon went and in came Freddie to join Alfie. They occupied the crease but due to accurate bowling found it difficult to score easily. Alfie went and was replaced by Cole, who again stayed there for a while but struggled to turn time at the crease into runs.
Devon eventually limped to 86ao in the 33rd over. Freddie, Sam and Luke only batsman to reach double figures.
Devon fought hard with the ball and threw themselves around in the field but to no avail as the Welsh batsman moved steadily towards their target.  Spinner Max bagged 2 wickets but Wales got over the line in the 25th over and this really was down to a disappointing batting effort by Devon.

Result:

Devon 86 (Sam 20,Freddie 20)
Wales 87-3 (Max 9-0-26-2)

Day 4 v Yorkshire

Devon won the toss and asked the Festival favourites to bat first.  They did just that and established a total of 62-0 after 15 overs. Devon used spinner Max to open the innings which gave them some control from one end. The first wicket eventually fell int he 21st over to spinner Ollie P and the second quickly fell to Cole and Yorkshire were held to 128-2 after 30 overs.
Yorkshire made the most of the platform set and pushed onto a challenging total of 220-3 off their allotted 45 overs.
Devon openers Freddie and Sam made a slow but steady start and pushed Devon to 43-0 off 15 overs.
A couple of false shots saw both Sam and Freddie caught in quick succession and gave the momentum to Wales.  That said Luke Medlock had a different idea and his well constructed 49 kept Devon in the run chase up until the last 10 overs.
Devon were 125-3 at the 30 over point and really in the game right up until 35th over until Luke was out LBW.  The batsman who followed were unable to push on and we eventually reached 172-9 off our 45 overs.
A great game for the spectator and one in which the Yorkshire coach congratulated us in giving his team the best contest all season.

Result:
Yorkshire 220-3
Devon 172-9 (Luke 49)

Day 5 v Middlesex
Middlesex won the toss and asked Devon to bat in this early start and 40 over game.  A slow and steady start made by Sam and Freddie to push Devon to 29-0 after 10 overs.  Again 2 loose shots and 2 catches brought an end to 2 promising innings and Devon reached 63-2 after 20. Jack and Alfie steadied the innings before Jack was run out for 23. Archie and Luke hit some useful contributions but wickets fell steadily and Devon were all bowled out for 134.
Middlesex set about hitting their target quickly and confidently. Devon soon realised how much below par their total was and Middlesex were 52-0 after 7! Jack and Ollie P shared the wickets but Middlesex soon reached the target in the 29th over.

Result:

Devon 134 (Sam 29,Jack 23)
Middlesex 135-4 (
Jack 6-0-20-2)

The group finished like this:

YORKSHIRE
Middlesex
Wales
Devon
Cheshire
Buckinghamshire

A fantastic week enjoyed by all the boys and some really good things were leant.

Excellent Hampshire Batting Too Strong For Devon Under 14’s

Devon Under 14’s hosted Hampshire Under 14’s at Sandford CC and came up against a very strong batting line up that found the excellent pitch very much to their liking.  Batting first Hampshire totalled 285-9 with opener Felix Organ scoring a classy 109 whilst number 3, Tom Gnodde, hit a fluent 60 as the pair put on 119 for the 2nd wicket. Best of the bowling figures was 2-18 from Noah Wright.  Wright backed that up with a top score of 52 not out as Devon fell 103 runs short, finishing on 182-7. There were  good knocks from Harvey Sargent (48) and Finlay Marks (30) but it was the introduction of the Hampshire spinners slowed down the run rate and the failure of one of the Devon batters to go on to a big score resulted in Devon falling quite a way short of their target.

Result:

Hampshire Under 14’s: 285-9 (Noah Wright 2-18)

Devon Under 14’s: 182-7 (Noah Wright 52*, Harvey Sargent 48, Finlay Marks 30)

Devon Under 14’s lost by 103 runs.

Devon Under 12’s Finish the Season With Some Highs and Some Lows

Devon Under 12’s hit the highs – and the lows – as their main summer season came to a close.

The high was a convincing win against Gloucester at Torquay CC.

Opener James Degg should have notched his maiden county century but still batted extremely well with 82 from 72 balls as Devon batted first and posted a total of 204-7.  Sam Taylor contributed a useful 43.

Degg then did the damage with the ball bagging 3-7 from four overs as the visitors crumbled to 133 all out.  Sam Carpenter (3-20 ) and Tom Jeacock (2-11) were also among the wickets.

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 204-7 ( James Degg 82, Sam Taylor 43)

Gloucester Under 12’s: 133 (James Degg 3-7, Sam Carpenter 3-20, Tom Jeacock 2-11)

Devon Under 12’s won by 71 runs

It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show as Devon travelled to Hampshire for their last game before heading off to the annual festival at King’s College, Taunton.

Hampshire batted first and finished on 186-8, a gettable score. Johnny Joseph (3-24) and Carpenter (2-38) were the main wicket takers.

It wasn’t pretty stuff as Devon were bowled out for just 75 in the 22nd over. Jonty Walliker top scored with just 18.

Result:

Hampshire Under 12’s: 186-8 ( Johnny Joseph 3-24, Sam Carpenter 2-38), Devon Under 12’s: 75.

Hampshire Under 12’s won by 111 runs.

DEVON UNDER 12’s TAUNTON FESTIVAL REVIEW

DAY 1: Devon v Lancashire

Devon got off to an encouraging start when they pushed Lancashire all the way in their opening game.

Lancashire decided to bat in a reduced 30 over game and were poised to post a decent score with the total standing at 79-1 at the half way stage. But some tight bowling from spinners Max Mejzner (2-33) and James Degg (2-21) – backed up by two sharp run outs – saw Lancashire having to settle for 150-9.  Kersley Sutton weighed in with 2-10.

Ben Sapiecha almost proved to be to the match winner. His first 25 balls were all dots but he went on to hit 58 off 72. Degg also hit a brisk 27.

Devon came so close and eventually reached 141-7 for a losing draw.

Result:

Lancashire Under 12’s: 150-9 (Kersley Sutton 2-10, James Degg 2-21, Max Mezjner 2-33)

Devon Under 12’s: 141-7 (Ben Sapiecha 58, James Degg 27).

Day 2:Devon v St Stithians

The Under 13 visitors from South Africa won the toss And asked Devon to bat.

Opener Jack Smyly top scored with 31 and Lachlan Fulton hit 26 as Devon found themselves all out for 128 in the 43rd over – but the game was far from over.

Enter Johnny Joseph whose superb five wicket haul had Stithians in a fluster. They were 27-5 after seven overs. The game was still evenly poised as Stithians reached 106-7 after 28 overs, but sensible batting saw them over the finishing line.

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 128 (Jack Smyly 31, Lachlan Fulton 26)

St Stithians Under 13’s: 129-7 (Johnny Joseph 5-23)

Devon lost by three wickets

Day 3 Devon v Hampshire

Captain Sam Taylor won the toss and decided to bowl on a damp track under cloudy skies. Hampshire finished their 50 overs with a challenging total of 233-. James Degg picked up three wickets along the way.

Ben Sapiecha (78) was among the runs again as he and Degg (37) put on 95 for the second wicket. Devon were 105-2 in the 31st over.

But 12 overs to get 91 was a tall order and Devon settled for the draw on 198-8.

Result:

Hampshire Under 12’s: 233-8 (James Degg 3-28),

Devon Under 12’s: 198-8 (Ben Sapiecha 78, James Degg 37)

Match drawn

Day 4 Devon v Surrey

Devon were asked to bat and ended on 177-8. Isaac Windley top scored with 45 with Lachlan Fulton hitting 42.

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 177-8(Isaac Windley 45, Lachlan Fulton 42)

Surrey Under 12’s: 178-0

 Devon lost by 10 wickets.

Day 5 Devon v Gloucester

Devon had to pick themselves up after the Surrey disappointment for their final game against Gloucester who won the toss and asked Devon to bat. The match was reduced to 45 overs. Devon got off to a good start as openers James Degg and Jack Smyly (29) put on 56 for the first wicket.= but the rest of the batting failed to fire.

Degg went on to score 32 as Devon reached 159-7 at the end of their overs.

A couple of quick wickets were required but it wasn’t to be. Gloucester lost just one wicket as they strolled to victory.

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 159-7 (James Degg 32, Jack Smyly 29)

Gloucester Under 12’s: 162-1. Devon lost by nine wickets.

Devon finished fifth overall.

Elliott Hamilton Scores Back to Back Centuries For the Devon Under 10’s.

Makes history as the first Devon Under 10 to score a century.

Devon Under 10’s v Cornwall Under 10’s

Devon travelled to their neighbours to play at Camborne Cricket Club and we’re invited to bat on an excellent looking wicket.  After two early wickets fell Will Scott-Munden and Elliot Hamilton found themselves in record breaking mood.  Superb strokeplay and some fierce hitting contributed towards a partnership of 149 with Will Scott Munden eventually out for a classy 61.  Elliot Hamilton went on to record the first ever Devon Under 10 century, retiring on 100*. It was a chanceless innings that was a handful for the Cornish skipper to set a field against as he hit the ball to all parts.  Devon raced along to a formidable 229-6 off their 35 overs. Cornwall found their reply hard work and eventually batted out their overs to finish on 89-7, with captain Josh Farley recording tight figures of 5-2-7-2.

Result:

Devon Under 10’s: 229 for 6 (Elliott Hamilton 100 ret. Will Scott-Munden 61)

Cornwall Under 10’s: 89 for 7 (Josh Farley 2-7)

Devon won by 140 runs

Devon u10 v Herefordshire

Devon Under 10’s next game saw them travelling to Herefordshire. Devon elected to bat first after winning the toss and once again it was that man Elliot Hamilton who stole the show, incredibly scoring back-to-back centuries.  This is certainly a feat never achieved in Devon for such a young player, and one would expect might challenge the national record books!  In a score of 110* Elliot crashed the ball to all parts of the ground bringing up his century from just 79 balls. Wicketkeeper Joe Du’Gay hit a quick 44* as Devon broke another Under 10 record reaching their highest ever score of 257-3.

In reply, it was another heroic effort, this time from bowler Sam Jefferson.  Sam recorded his first ever county ‘5fer’ finishing with figures of 7-1-23-5 and cleaned out the Herefordshire middle order.  They eventually scrambled to 127-9 from their allotted overs as Devon recoreded a comfortable 130 run victory.

Coach James Bogue was delighted with the two victories, The team have developed brilliantly over the summer and are beginning to set very challenging totals for the opposition.  Elliot Hamilton’s back to back hundreds are the finest knocks I’ve ever seen at this age, and we have 4 or 5 other batters who have scored maiden fifties this year, which is brilliant.”

Result:

Devon Under 10’s: 257-3 (Elliott Hamilton 110*, Joseph Du’Gay 44*)

Herefordshire Under 10’s: 127-9 (Sam Jefferson 5-23)

Devon Under 10’s won by 130 runs.

Devon Under 11’s Win In Quick Time

Devon Under 11’s were asked to bowl first against Worcestershire Under 11’s at Exmouth and put in a superb display. Conditions seemed to favour the bowlers with four maidens bowled in the first ten overs. The first wicket fell in the second over and the score was 9-1 after 9 overs bowled. Opening bowlers Alfie Hagan-Burt (5-3-5-0) and Tom Simmons (6-1-8-4) returned some incredible figures and the first change bowlers Jack Moore (5-1-10-4) and Luke Medlock (5-4-1-2) were just as destructive and the Worcester batsman had no answers and finished 30 all out after 22 overs. Devon turned straight round and knocked off the total for the loss of 2 wickets in just 9.1 overs. Coach Jason Degg said, “It was a brilliant spell of bowling resulting in a very quick game.”

Result:

Worcestershire Under 11’s: 30 all out. (Tom Simmons 4-8, Jack Moore 4-10)

Devon Under 11’s: 31 for  2

Devon won by 8 wickets

Devon Under 15’s Finish ECB Competition With Another Loss

Devon Under 15’s concluded their ECB Under 15 County Cup programme with defeat by Hampshire in a high scoring game at Bashley CC.

Hampshire posted a demanding 261 for 6 in their 50 overs but Devon responded with a much improved batting performance compared to their previous outing against Somerset.

Charles Parkin and Jamie Telford got Devon off to an encouraging star with 56 for the first wicket before a collapse saw them reduced to 70 for 5. Enter Dan Wolf with yet another valuable contribution (64) and debutant Tom Counsell (39) who put on 85 for the sixth wicket to threaten the Hampshire score. Thereafter Alfie  Huxtable produced  a lively 20 but the loss of those early wickets proved decisive as Devon were dismissed 45 runs sort with 5 overs remaining.

Result:

Hampshire Under 15’s: 261-6 (Charlie Fitzroy 2-10)

Devon Under 15’s: 216 all out (Dan Wolf 64, Tom Counsell 39)

Devon Under 15’s lost by 45 runs

T 20 Competition, 24th & 25th July 2013

Devon Under 17 girls competed in the annual T20 competition at Basingstoke CC, along with teams from Wales, Somerset and Hampshire.

Devon Under 17 Girls V Somerset Under 17 Girls

Devon faced Somerset in their first match and were pi in to bat first and ended their  powerplay at 48/1, having lost Claire Varcoe in the first over.  Despite losing 5-25 in the middle overs, Devon finished on 151/9, Alli Kelly hitting 50 off 42 balls. In reply, Somerset set off at pace and were 42/1 at the end of their powerplay. Tight bowling from Cait O’Keefe and Lydia Harris then restricted them and they finished their innings all out for 109.

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls: 151-9 (Alli Kelly 50, Lydia Harris 24)

Somerset Under 17 Girls: 109 all out (Lydia Harris 3-7)

Devon Under 17 Girls won by 42 runs

Devon Under 17 Girls V Hampshire Under 17 Girls

The afternoon game saw hosts Hampshire batting first against Devon.  A combination of much improved fielding  and Cait O’Keefe finishing with figures of 4-9 runs ensured Hampshire were always on the back foot, ending their powerplay on 28-3.  Wickets then fell at regular intervals and Hampshire were finally bowled out for 95.  Devon started the chase well putting 45-0 on the board at the end of the powerplay. An excellent 51 no off 43 balls from Claire Varcoe saw Devon seal a comfortable victory, knocking off the runs in the 13th over with the loss of just 1 wicket.

Result:

Hampshire Under 17 Girls: 95 all out (Cait O’Keefe 4-9)

Devon Under 17 Girls: 97-1 (Claire Varcoe 51no)

Devon Under 17 Girls won by 9 wickets

Winning 2 from 2, and with other results going their way, this was enough to secure Devon’s place in the tournament final, regardless of the outcome of the 3rd game against Wales, who had also reached the tournament final in the same fashion.

Devon Under 17 Girls v Wales Under 17 Girls

Both teams mixed up their batting and bowling orders for this 3rd match, which saw Devon bat first. New opening partners Jemma Horton & Gemma Lancaster unfortunately didn’t stay long at the crease with Gemma being dismissed in the first over. Captain Emily Ward came in at 3 and scored her maiden 50 for Devon, finishing on 58 off 36 balls. Devon’s innings closed on 147-7.

In reply, despite a 12 ball opening over from Annabel Squire, Wales were 26-2 at the end of their powerplay.  Alli Kelly then relinquished her ‘keeping gloves to have a bowl in this new look line up, and took the important wicket of Ellie Hopkins, who had scored 94 from 56 balls the previous day.  Kelly finished her 4 overs with 3/17 and Wales were bowled out for 88.

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls: 147-7 (Emily Ward 58)

Wales Under 17 Girls; 88 all out (Alli Kelly 3-17, Jemma Horton 2-5, Olivia Young 2-6)

Devon Under 17 Girls won by 59 runs.

 Tournament Final

Devon then returned to their normal line up to face Wales in the final, and winning the toss decided to bat first.  Having lost Claire Varcoe in the first over, Alli Kelly, who had been in great form throughout the tournament,  came to the crease but this time Kelly only lasted 11 balls before being caught. Emily Ward was out two balls later and Devon finished their powerplay struggling at 37-3. Jemma Horton then stayed with Lydia Harris to rebuild, before Horton was give out LBW on 16. Harris kept going and brought up her 50 after facing 46 balls. Cait O’Keefe once again showed off her running skills, scoring 32 off 26 balls which included just one boundary, helping Devon to finish their innings on 143-9.

Chasing Devon’s score, some powerful hitting saw Wales finish their powerplay on 44-0. A series of miss-fields, dropped catches and inconsistent bowling from Devon kept Wales in the game, and they needed 27 from the last 3 overs to win the tournament, still with 7 wickets in hand.  Going into the last over needing just 4 runs, Wales sealed victory and so won the tournament, with Devon taking the runners up spot.

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls: 143-9 (Lydia Harris 60, Cait O’Keefe 32)

Wales Under 17 Girls: 144-5

Wales Under 17 Girls won by 5 wickets.

Coach Trevor Griffin said “I’m very proud of the girls, they played some fantastic cricket over the 2 days. We had clear plans for each game and they worked hard at achieving them.  We had four scores of 50 plus from four different batters and opposition coaches commented on our running between the wickets and how we put fielders under pressure, which was shown no better than by Cait O’keefe. The final was exactly what T20 cricket is about, ebbing and flowing from one team to the other but loss of focus at critical moments can influence the result of these games and that’s exactly what happened. “

Alli Kelly Stars In the Devon Under 17 Girls Win Against Wales

Following  their win against Wales earlier in the season, the Devon Under 17 girls travelled to Dryffyn CC to play the return fixture.

Devon won the toss and decided to bat first, Lydia Harris & Claire Varcoe opening with some powerful hitting and excellent running.  The first wicket fell in the 11th over with the score on 62.

Alli Kelly continued her fine form and followed up her 71 in the previous game with a great score of 74, putting on a partnership of 81 with Varcoe (32) and then another of 30 with Olivia Young (12) who was playing in her first match for the under 17s.

Cait O’Keefe and captain Emily Ward ran hard in the last 5 overs, adding 39 to the score with just 3 boundaries, which helped Devon to finish their innings on 236 for 4 from their 45 overs.

Wales’ innings started off in the worst possible way for them when Cait O’Keefe made an excellent stop at short extra cover to effect a run out after just 3 balls.

Anna Cherrington and Emily Ward bowled with good control during the match, Anna finishing her spell of 5 overs with 1 wicket for just 6 runs. Gemma Lancaster showed great potential with her left arm, inswinging bowling and Katie Chisolm also performed well in her 5 overs, taking 2-16.

Despite some late hitting from Cerys Thomas Wales finished on 166 for 7 giving Devon their second win of the season.

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls: 236-4 (Alli Kelly 74, Lydia Harris 37, Claire Varcoe 32)

Wales Under 17 Girls: 166-7 (Katie Chisholm 2-16, Emily Ward 2-22)

Devon Under 17 Girls won by 70 runs

Petherbridge’s Hat-trick The Highlight Of Devon Under 14’s King’s School Festival

The Devon Under 14’s were drawn in a very strong group for their annual King’s Taunton Festival. Game 1 was against a strong Derbyshire side that have been unbeaten over the last two seasons. Batting first on a scorching hot day Devon compiled an adequate score of 212-5 off 45 overs with good knocks from captain Joe Hagan-Burt (45), Ben Phillips (38*) and Neal Osborn (30*). Missed chances cost Devon dear as Derbyshire got home in the 43rd over with 5 wickets in hand.

Result;

Devon Under 14’s: 212-5 (Joe Hagan-Burt 45, Ben Phillips 38*, Neal Osborn 30*)

Derbyshire Under 14’s: 216-5 (Joe Hagan-Burt 2-35)

Derbyshire won by 5 wickets

Day 2 saw Devon take on take on Wales on a slightly cooler day after a huge thunderstorm over night. Devon again batted first and posted another competitive score of 194-5. Hagan-Burt continued his good form with 32 whilst fellow opener Harvey Sargent top scored with 48. At 28-0 Wales had a solid platform but the introduction of left arm spinner, Matthew Petherbridge saw him take a hat-trick with his 2nd,3rd and 4th balls. Unfortunately for Devon, Richards, the Wales opener played a fine innings of 106 not out and despite two more wickets from Petherbridge Wales crossed the finish line with more than five overs to spare.

Result:

Devon Under 14’s: 194-5 (Harvey Sargent 48, Joe Hagan-Burt 32, Neal Osborn 30)

Wales Under 14’s: 200-5 (Matthew Petherbridge 5-20)

Wales won by 5 wickets.

Yorkshire were Devon’s opponents on Day 3 and batted first to score an imposing 250-7. Again the opposition opener scored a fantastic century, this time Brooks with 126 who put on 141 for the first wicket with Loten. Richard Cabburn took 2-34 and Charlie Ward 2-26. Devon battled hard to secure a losing draw, finishing on 178-8 with a fine half century from Ben Phillips being the stand out innings.

Result:

Yorkshire Under 14’s: 250-7 (  Charlie Ward 2-26,Richard Cabburn 2-34)

Devon Under 14’s: 178-8 (Ben Phillips 50, Harvey Sargent 32)

Devon losing draw.

Devon again bowled first on Day 4, this time against Worcestershire. A fine all-round bowling and fielding performance restricted Worcestershire to just 161-8. After a good performance behind the stumps Finley Marks backed that up with a well constructed half century. Harvey Sargent played his best innings of the season to score 59 and Devon romped home with more than 5 overs to spare and 5 wickets in hand.

Result:

Worcestershire Under 14’s: 161-8 (Matthew Petherbridge 2-28)

Devon Under 14’s: 163-5 (Harvey Sargent 59, Finley Marks 57)

Devon won by 5 wickets

The last day of the tournament pitted Devon against Gloucestershire. Once again Devon put in a brilliant bowling performance to dismiss Gloucestershire for a paltry 118. Billy Rudolf took 4-32 and Ollie Hannam 3-16. Knocking off the runs was not too difficult with Harvey Sargent (38) and Noah Wright (29) breaking the back of the chase to see Devon romp home with over 8 overs in hand.

Manger Jon Mears was delighted with how his team improved over the week. “The most encouraging aspect of finishing fourth overall was seeing the boys’ confidence grow over the week after playing against some very strong teams.”

Result:

Gloucestershire Under 14’s: 118 all out (Billy Rudolf 4-32, Ollie Hannam 3-16)

Devon Under 14’s: 119-4 ( Harvey Sargent 38, Noah Wright 29)

Devon won by 6 wickets.

DEVON UNDER 13’s WALLOP WILTSHIRE

Devon Under 13’s continued their dominant form with a crushing 156 run win over Wiltshire Under 13’s at Lewdown Cricket Club. Playing on the same wicket that saw Marco Marais score an unbeaten 200 the day before Devon took advantage of a superb batting track to rack up a formidable total of 223-8. Tom Williams and Jamie Khan put on 79 for the second wicket and Jack Gibbs and Sam Maunder continued their fine form from the game against Cardiff with a quick fire 59 run partnership.

In reply Wiltshire never came to terms with the depth of the Devon bowling.  All seven Devon bowlers took a wicket, with the stand out once again being off spinner Chris Yabsley who took 2-15 from 8 miserly overs.

A delighted Devon Manager Nigel Ashplant said, "It is a pleasure to watch this side at the moment.  They are in good form and out classing most opponents. Let's hope they carry this in to the Taunton Festival which starts on the 12th August.”

Result:

Devon Under 13’s: 223-8 (Tom Williams 39, Jamie Khan 51, Jack Gibbs 42, Sam Maunder 26)

Wiltshire Under 13’s: 67 all out ( Chris Yabsley 2-15)

Devon Under 13’s won by 156 runs.

BATTING FLOPS AFTER A GOOD BOWLING PERFORMANCE BY DEVON UNDER 15’S AGAINST SOMERSET

The Devon Under 15’s took on Somerset Under 15’s at the beautiful Heatcoat Cricket Club ground and put in a display of two contrasting halves. A good bowling effort saw Somerset dismissed for only 128. Pick of the Devon bowlers were Dan Wolf (3-21), Ben Causey (2-14) and Ben Green (1-7). Unfortunately Devon then produced their worst batting performance of the season to be skittled out for a paltry 83 due to a series of poor shot selections and lack of application. Devon were all out with 33 of their allotted overs remaining with skipper Ben Steer being the top scorer with just 19. Somerset’s Janinder Morgan took the last 3 wickets in three balls to complete a hat trick.

Manager Alan Swift was in philosophical mood after the game. “Our bowling and fielding was what is expected of a county side but unfortunately it was one of those days where every bad shot resulted in a wicket and we lacked the application to battle through against a good Somerset attack.”

Result:

Somerset Under 15’s: 128 all out (Dan Wolf 3-21, Ben Causey 2-14, Ben Green 1-7)

Devon Under 15’s: 83 all out (Ben Steer 19)

Somerset won by 45 runs

Devon Under 15 Girls Lose Against  v Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls

The Devon Under 15 Girls felt confident when they met up with their Gloucestershire counterparts having recently beaten them back in May in the regional T20 competition but on this occasion Gloucestershire put an end to Devon’s winning streak. Notable batting from both Jessie Jones (48) and Stacey Maskelyne (40) saw Devon total 152 but unfortunately they were bowled out in 33 overs after good bowling from the Gloucestershire's girls Jess Werrett (3-21) and Charlie Phillips (2-39). After tea, Gloucestershire also faced some good bowling from Milly Squire (1-29), Jessie Jones (2-20) and Emily Baker (2-18) but Gloucestershire slowly built their innings and managed to bat their way past their target, finishing on 153-8.

Coach Alex Carr said, “Unfortunately our lack of managing to bat all of our overs again did not help our cause and neither did the 33 extras we donated to Gloucestershire.”

Result:

Devon Under 15 Girls: 152 all out (Jessie Jones 48, Stacey Maskelyne 40)

Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls: 153-8 (Emily Baker 2-18, Jessie Jones 2-20)

Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls won by 2 wickets

Devon Under 15 Girls Struggle Against Somerset Under 15 Girls

Facing Somerset on a hot, though breezy afternoon, there was a certain amount of pressure in the air that Devon needed to win against Somerset after their defeat against Gloucestershire.

Somerset won the toss and decided to bat. The early wicket of Jemima Turner in the third over off  Milly Squire's bowling (2-14), caught by Emily Baker; and then in the very next over Charlea Boucher succumbed  to Emily Baker's bowling (1-34), caught by Lauren Bowden gave the Devon girls the very start they wanted. At 35 for a loss of four wickets Somerset's Izzie Williams (23) and Cassie Coombes came to the crease and slowly put on valuable runs. At 112-6, Somerset's Klara Rose (55), played some well timed and executed shots. She was eventually run out by Emily Baker after a fine, match winning innings. Somerset completed their overs on 171-8.

With Devon chasing a respectable total it was never going to be an easy task against some tight Somerset bowling. With the top order falling cheaply it was left to Lydia Clements (26), Emily Baker (12) and Milly Lee (23) to attempt to salvage the game. Georgia Wilson (3-29) from Somerset did considerable damage as did Klara Rose (3-11) to the Devon innings and though the  Devon girls did manage to bat out their overs they finished  short on 132 for 9, losing by 39 runs.

Result:

Somerset Under 15 Girls: 171-8 (Millie Squire 2-14)

Devon Under 15 Girls: 132-9 (Lydia Clements 26, Milly Lee 23)

Somerset Under 15 Girls won by 39 runs

Sam Read Hits His Maiden Devon Century As Devon Under 11’s Thrash Somerset

Devon hosted neighbours Somerset at Barnstaple CC in sweltering heat and unsurprisingly after winning the toss Somerset opted to bat on what can only be described as a road! Devon got off to a great start as opening bowler Alfie Hagan-Burt had Somerset’s opening batsman caught behind to the 2nd ball of the innings. Somerset rebuilt and against some brilliant bowling managed to get to 48-1 after their first ten overs. Cole Harford picked up the next wicket before Hagan-Burt completed a direct hit to run out the 3rd wicket. Somerset despite these blows batted sensibly and at 30 overs were 139-4 with wickets in hand to post a big total. With batsman in hand they were able to attack the final overs and finished on 214-9 after their 40. Pick of the Devon  bowlers was captain Jack Moore with figures of  8-0-34-3
The in form Devon openers knew a positive start was required and this they supplied with a scintillating start. After 10 overs Sam Read and Luke Medlock had smashed 72 runs to put Devon firmly in the driving seat to chase down the total. At the halfway stage Devon were still rattling along on 131-0.
Medlock finally went adjudged LBW for 75 in the 24th over. He faced 88 balls, hitting 13 boundaries. Read was joined by captain Jack Moore and a partnership of 38 was added before Moore was caught for 10 in the 32nd over with the score on 189.
Read at this point was on 83 and sensed a possible maiden county century with 26 runs required for victory. In the 37th over Sam went to 101 with a magnificent pull off his hip for a one bounce four behind square leg and Devon had again chased down a big total to win the match. Big celebrations ensued for what is a huge milestone in Under 11 cricket.

Result:

Somerset Under 11’s: 214-9 off 40 overs (Jack Moore 3-34)

Devon Under 11’s: 216-2 off 37 overs (Sam Read 101*, Luke Medlock 75)

Devon Under 11’s won by 8 wickets

Devon Under 15’s Win Their First Game of the Season

Devon Under 15’s gained their first win In the ECB Under15 Div 1 Cup by defeating the current league leaders Buckinghamshire. Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first Devon posted a challenging 256 for 8 with a splendid 95 from Ben Green, who was unluckily caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings trying to reach his  century. He was ably supported by Dan Pyle (57) and Toby Codd (39).

Even this total was not out of reach on a splendid  Sidmouth pitch, but Dan Goodey put Devon firmly in the driving seat by quickly removing the Buckinghamshire opening pair who were both caught behind by Josh Cann.  At 21 for 3 Bucks looked out of contention but a lively fourth wicket stand of 80  threatened to turn things round. Relief for Devon came when Ogden (56) was caught by Barriball off Codd for 36 and then the dangerous Bowcock (82) was bowled by Green to effectively end the Buckinghamshire challenge who were eventually dismissed for 198 leaving Devon winners by 58 runs.

Result:

Devon Under 15’s: 256-8 (Ben Green 95, Dan Pyle 57,Toby Codd 39)

Buckinghamshire Under 15’s: 198-9 (Dan Goodey 3-52)

DEVON UNDER 13’s HAVE TWO WINS IN A WEEK AGAINST CORNWALL and CARDIFF & THE VALE

Devon continued their unbeaten run with comprehensive victories over near neighbours Cornwall and Welsh District side Cardiff & The Vale.

An opening partnership of 65 between Tom Williams and Jamie Khan set the foundations against Cornwall and contributions from the middle order set a challenging target for the Duchy. Cornwall started well before pace man Callum Worth took a couple of wickets but still looked on course for victory until the introduction of spin stopped the visitors in their tracks, with  Chris Yabsley, Dan Bullock and Tom Williams proving too much of a challenge on a turning wicket.

Result:

Devon Under 13’s: 189-6 (M Cooper 46*, T Williams 39, J Khan 26, K Szymanski 24, A Causey 20)

Cornwall Under 13’s: 142 all out (C Yabsley 4-29, T Williams 2-11, D Bullock 2-24, C Worth 2-25)

Devon won by 47 runs.

On Tuesday Devon were too strong for the Cardiff & Vale district side. The wickets were shared as the Welshmen were dismissed for 116.

This gave the opportunity for some batting practice for those who have not featured much this season.  With skipper Sam Maunder (26) batting sensibly at one end, Jack Gibbs took full advantage of his promotion up the order scoring and unbeaten 41 as Devon reached their target in 23 overs.

Result:

Cardiff & TheVale Under 13’s: 113 all out (J Khan 3-12, C Yabsley 2-22)

DEGG TAKES UNUSUAL HAT-TRICK FOR DEVON UNDER 12’S

The Devon Under 12’s played two games against Welsh opposition and came away winners in both games. Isaac Windley marked his debut with a maiden half century as Devon Under 12’s defeated Gwent at Barton's sun-drenched Cricketfield Road ground. The home county opted to bat first and got off to a cracking start with opener James Degg setting the tone with a quick-fire 69 from just 37 balls. Windley didn't hang around as his 54 came from 65 deliveries.  Sam Carpenter continued the onslaught with 46 as Devon finished on a very challenging 254 for 8 from their 40 overs. Gwent were never up with the run chase losing early wickets to Max Mejzner (2-17) and Jonty Walliker (2-13).Then it was left to occassional spinner Degg to wrap things up with two wickets in two balls as Gwent were bowled out for just 117 in the 33rd over.

Opening bat-turned spinner James Degg had the chance of completing an unlikely hat-trick with two wickets in two balls from the previous game against Gwent - and did it with his first ball against Cardiff/Vales at Cardiff CC. The home county decided to bat first and finished on 143-8 from 40 overs. Debutant Tom Jeacock bowled well to finish with 2-28 and then there was that hat-trick ball from Degg.

Degg put on his pads to score 22 as Devon set about chasing down the total.  Ollie O'Livey chipped in with 24 and then Isaac Windley followed up his maiden half century on debut against Gwent with a match-winning 56 off just 43 balls as Devon romped home for the loss of just four wickets with 18 overs to spare. Manager Jim Parker said: "The two wins will give the lads a big confidence boost. It was great to see Isaac and Tom come into the side and contribute so well and so positively. And congratulations to Deggy for that hat-trick!"

Result:

Devon Under 12’s: 254-8 (James Degg 69, Isaac Windley 54, Sam Carpenter 46)

Gwent Under 12’s:  117(Max Mejzner 2-17 Jonty Walliker 2-13, James Degg 2-0)

Devon Under 10s Cruise to Victory Against Wiltshire

Devon hosted Wiltshire at Blundell’s for their final preparation match before heading to the Taunton Under 10 Festival.  At the toss Devon were invited to field on a flat, dry looking wicket.  Wiltshire were under immediate pressure from opening bowlers Charlie Ward (2-15) and Archie Farkins (2-12).  Regular wickets fell and the introduction of in form spinners Rory Medlock (2-13) and Will Scott-Munden (3-14) finished the job in style with Wiltshire limping to 70 all out. An early wobble saw Devon reduced to 28-3 but thankfully Elliot Hamilton came to the crease and hit a flurry of boundaries in typical fashion reaching 29* off just 18 balls. Captain Josh Farley (16*) supported at the other end as there were no more mishaps as Devon cruised to a seven wicket victory in just 10.2 overs.

Result:

Wiltshire Under 10’s: 70 All out (Will Scott-Munden 3-14)

Devon Under 10’s: 71-3 (Elliot Hamilton 29*, Josh Farley 16*)

Devon Under 11’s Have Fun in the Sun

Devon Under 11’s travelled to the picturesque Canford School  to take on the Dorset Under 11’s and came away victorious after a remarkable days cricket. Dorset won the toss and decided to bat on what looked a batting paradise on a sweltering hot day and an outfield like glass. Dorset made a slow and steady start against the Devon opening bowlers. Archie Christopher took an early wicket and he was backed up by some great line and length bowling from Alfie Hagan Burt. Dorset reached the halfway stage at 59-2 so did well to finish on177-8 after their 40 overs. Tea was taken and Devon knew they needed to make a positive start and take the game to Dorset. Up stepped Luke Medlock with an aggressive, quick fire, 54 off just 59 balls including 9 boundaries. He was backed up by opener Sam Read who scored another half century finishing 60 not out. Jack Moore came in at number 3 to help Sam over the line with a superb 38 from 42 balls including 6 boundaries. Devon crossed the finishing line with 8.3 overs remaining and remarkably only losing one wicket.

Result:
Dorset 177-8 off 40 (Jack Moore 1-26,Ollie Hannam1-18, Luke Medlock 1-22)

Devon 181-1 off 31.3 overs (Luke Medlock 54,Sam Read 60*,Jack Moore 38*)

Devon Under 10’s First Loss of the Season Against Somerset

Devon Under 10’s fell to their first defeat of the season against local rivals Somerset in an entertaining game at Bovey Tracey. Batting first on a glorious summer’s day Devon reached 138-7: a total they were disappointed with having got off to a 46 run start through an opening partnership between Josh Farley (22) and James Tyson (12). There was also an important contribution from wicketkeeper Joe Du’Gay (22) which ensured Devon posted a competitive total.  In reply Somerset lost regular wickets to the bowling of Archie Farkins (3-19) and where reduced to 72-5. Run rate was never a problem as boundaries were scored a plenty. It was a crucial 8th wicket partnership of 31 which guided Somerset to a two wicket win with five overs to spare.

Coach James Bogue said, “It has been a great start to the season, and county youth cricket for our under 10s, winning three from their first four matches.  They are learning every week and today was a fine example of showing real character despite only posting a modest total.”

Result:

Devon Under 10’s: 138-7 (Josh Farley 22, Joe Du’Gay 21)

Somerset Under 10’s: 142-8 ( Archie Farkins 3-19,)

Somerset won by 2 wickets.

Devon Under 10’s Bounce Back Against Bucks

Two days after their first defeat of the season Devon Under 10s bounced back with a hard fought win against Buckinghamshire. On a scorching afternoon at Millfield Devon won the toss and inserted the opposition. A final total of 146/4 for Buckinghamshire was competitive and most probably more than it should have been owing to several dropped catches. The Ground fielding and bowling however was very good, with Charlie Ward taking 2/14 off 6 overs and Rory Medlock and Josh Farley both taking a wicket each.

In reply Devon got off to a solid start with Captain Josh Farley scoring 28. At the halfway stage Devon were 60 for 2. Will Scott-Munden (38) and Joe Du Gay (31 not out) put on 46 for the third wicket to take Devon to 103. Needing a run a ball for the final 11 overs these two and then Elliot Hamilton (20 not out) accelerated the innings perfectly with boundaries and quick running to finish the game with more than two overs to spare.

Manager Ted Ashman said,” This was a fantastic performance and a great finish to a really hard fought game by both teams.”

Devon Under 15’s Disappointing Season Continues with Defeat Against Cornwall

The Devon Under 15’s disappointing season continued with defeat against their Tamar neighbours, losing by 36 runs chasing down Cornwall’s 223 all out. Harvey Sargent (4-49) and Ben Steer (3-39) were the most successful bowlers for Devon whilst Cornwall’s Skipper Ben James top scored with a fine 63, ably backed up by a hard hit 59 from Bradley Lynch. In reply no Devon batsman could better opener Dan Wolf’s 43 with wicket keeper Josh Cann being the next best with 39. Devon were all out for 187 with seven of their 50 overs remaining.

Manager Alan Swift said, “This was a good opportunity to blood some new players in this friendly game before we play Buckinghamshire in the ECB Cup Competition next week and Josh Cann can be very pleased with his performance.”

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls v Wales Under 17

Girls

ECB Girls Championship

Devon Under 17 Girls lost the toss and were put into bat in their first match of the ECB Girls competition which was played at Thorverton Cricket Club against Wales Under 17 Girls.

Claire Varcoe and Jemma Horton opened the batting for Devon, and built a solid platform before the first wicket fell in the 15th over with the score on 43.  Alli Kelly then came into bat and scored an impressive 74 before being caught out.  Cait O’Keefe finished the game on 32 not out, helping Devon reach 224-7 in their 45 overs. Pick of the bowlers for Wales was Ffion Wynne, who finished her 9 overs with 2 wickets for just 19 runs.

Devon then got off to a great start defending their score, with Gemma Lancaster taking a wicket in her first over, putting Wales on 4-1.  The opposition’s second wicket partnership then steadied their team, putting on 55.

Improved field settings from Devon along with tight bowling then restricted Wales’ scoring opportunities so much that they went into the last 10 overs of the game at 123-5, needing 101 more runs to win.  Opener Ffion Wynne along with Naomi Davies accelerated their run rate and put together a 77 run partnership before Ffion was bowled by Emily Ward, just 6 runs short of her hundred.

Wales finished on 194-6 from their 45 overs, giving Devon their first win.  Annabel Squire returned the best figures of the Devon bowlers, taking 2-15 from 7 overs.

Team Coach Trevor Griffin said “I felt the girls all executed their skills really well and showed great spirit.  I’m delighted the whole team contributed to our win . Alli Kelly’s excellent innings and great wicket keeping display stood out overall.  This is a great start and bodes well for a successful season.”

Result:

Devon Under 17 Girls: 224-7 (Ali Kelly 74, Cait O’Keefe 32*)

Wales Under 17 Girls: 194-6 (Annabel Squire 2-15)

Devon Under 17 Girls won by 30 runs.

Devon Under 15 Girls Win Against Wales

The Devon Under 15 Girls had a disastrous start against Wales losing Olivia Jones without scoring in the first over. Captain Emma Jackman and Jessie Jones steadied this early loss for Devon and posted a partnership of 56.  The fall of Jones’s (25) wicket in the 13th over, was followed soon after by Jackman and Devon were 56 for 3.  Despite a steady fall of wickets, many of the Devon girls contributed with the bat, notably Milly Squire (14) and Charlie Green (19). Devon were finally all out in the 34th over for a total of 146. Devon started well in the field with tight bowling from Milly Squire and Jessie Jones which brought the first fall of wicket in the third over and the second was to fall not soon after with a good catch by Emma Jackman off Jones’s bowling. At this stage Wales were 14-2. Jones’s bowling continued to give very little away (8-2-8-4); and Lily Helston (5.1-3-15-4) bowled brilliantly to claim four wickets. Wales were eventually bowled in the 28th over for 71.

Result:

Devon Under 15 Girls: 146 all out (Jessie Jones 25)

Wales Under 15 Girls: 71 all out (Jessie Jones 4-8, Lily Helston 4-15)

Devon Under 15 Girls won by 75 runs.

Joseph’s Heroics Not quite Enough for the Devon Under 12’s

It was a bad day at the office for the Devon Under 12’’s but a great day for Johnny Joseph. That summed up the Devon Under 12s and their latest game against Dorset in Weymouth. Devon batted first and were bowled out for a disappointing 76 in the 28th over. The highest score went to James Degg with just 14. To their credit the visitors put that discipline behind them and made Dorset fight hard for victory, especially Joseph who bagged his first five wicket haul for the county and finished with figures of 5-6 from eight overs. Dorset didn't cross the finishing line until the 35th over and lost eight wickets in the process. Manager Jim Parker said: "Special praise must go to Johnny. He bowled brilliantly. Sadly, it was the only real highlight of a poor performance and one we need to put behind us pretty quickly."

Result:

Devon: 76 all out

 Dorset 78-8(Johnny Joseph 5-6)

 Dorset won by two wickets

Devon Under 10’s Set A New Record

Devon Under 10s travelled to Newport International Sports Village to play Gwent in their third game of the season.  Newport Cricket Club was a fantastic venue, fresh from hosting Sri Lanka for the recent ICC Champions Trophy.  Devon were asked to bat on an excellent looking wicket, and the batters took full advantage from the outset.  The top 3 all scored half centuries, a feat never achieved by the Under 10s before, with James Tyson (54), Josh Farley (59) and Will Scott-Munden (62) all making sizeable contributions.  It was Will Scott-Munden’s third half century in a row, this the best of the lot from just 54 balls, as Devon raced to 206-3 from their 35 overs.  In reply Gwent got off to a strong start reaching 60-1 in quick time.  Sam Jefferson (3-19) and Rory Medlock (2-9) bowled crucial spells in the middle overs as the run rate slowed.  Gwent finished on 122-5 to leave Devon Under 10s the victors by 84 runs and now unbeaten in their first three games.

Result:

Devon Under 10s: 206 for 3 (Will Scott-Munden 62, Josh Farley 59, James Tyson 54)

Gwent Under 10's: 122 for 5 (Sam Jefferson 3-19, Rory Medlock 2-9)

Devon won by 84 runs

Devon Under 11’s in Convincing Win Over Oxford

Devon Under 10’s travelled to Oxford and came away with a convincing seven wicket victory. Oxford won the toss and decided to bat but found scoring against the accurate Devon bowlers difficult. Alfie Hagan-Burt and Tom Simmons opened the bowling for Devon and Simmons bowled three overs conceding only six runs whilst Hagan-Burt’s four only cost 12 for the loss of the opening wicket.  Jack Moore and Max Hancock took over and five successive maidens from Moore and a wicket from Hancock meant that Oxford were struggling and reached just 38-3 after 20 overs. Cole Harford took and amazing caught and bowled and Hancock engineered an astonishing direct hit to run out another batsman as Oxford struggled to115-7 off their 40 overs. Given this low total Devon openers made a positive but steady start. Luke Medlock hit a quick 17 off 25 balls. His partner Sam Read scored a very solid maiden county 50 not out with Ollie Hannam hitting 21 in support. Devon crossed the line in the 30th over for the loss of only three wickets.

Result:

Oxford Under 11’s: 115-7 (Cole Harford 1-8, Alfie Hagan-Burt 1-12, Max Hancock 1-16)

Devon Under 11’s: 116-3 (Sam Read 50* Ollie Hannam 21)

Devon won by 7 wickets.

Devon Under 13’s Remain Unbeaten With Victory Over Hampshire

The Devon Under 13's continued their winning run with a hard fought three wicket victory over Hampshire at Axminster.  The visitors won the toss and batted first and at 66-2 from 13 overs they looked set to post an imposing total. However the introduction of the Devon spinners slowed the rate, on a wicket with low bounce. Off-spinner Tom Williams took 3-28 and leg spinner Leon Horn (4-10) bowled straight to account for the tail. There were 4 bowled and 3 lbw in their joint haul. In reply Devon knew the threat would be from the spinners and batted accordingly.  The run chase was again led by Tom Lammonby who played straight and looked in little trouble and Kazi Szymanski supported him well and when Tom was dismissed saw the side home with 6 overs to spare. Manager Nigel Ashplant commented "On a wicket that demanded concentration and getting forward to the spinners, we applied ourselves better than the opposition.  Tom and Kazi again showed how they are maturing as cricketers, playing sensibly in the circumstances".

Result:

Hampshire Under 13’s: 132 all out (Leo Horn 4-10, Tom Williams 3-28)

Devon Under 13’s: 133-7 ( Tom Lammonby 40, Kazi Szymanski 28*, Jamie Khan 20)

Devon won by 3 wickets.

Great Win For Devon Under 15 Girls Against Hampshire Under 15 Girls

Devon Under 15 Girls won the toss and decided to bowl first against a strong Hampshire side. The first couple of overs passed as expected of a normal cricket match with a good contest between bat and ball. Suddenly in the third over Milly Squire started a flurry of wickets which continued throughout the match. Squire (4-9) cleaned out the top four of Hampshire as they slumped to 8-4 from 8 overs. The wickets continued to fall as Lily Helston (3-6) replaced Squire to bowl with raw pace and swing, whilst Jessie Jones spun away at the other end to finish with figures of 2-5. There was a late rally by Hampshire as they battled from 18-9 to 35-9 at drinks, but the introduction of captain Emma Jackman saw the final wicket fall at 38.

Devon knew the chase could still yet be a hard task with England Under 15 bowler Katie George (2-22) opening the bowler for Hampshire. This proved the case as she clean bowled Jackman in the first over before fellow opener Olivia Jones was caught off the bowling of Bilsland (2-8) to leave Devon 2-2. The middle order of Jessie Jones, Milly Squire and Lauren Bowden still looked to play their shots though and a smattering of boundaries along with some more than helpful extras took the score up to 32-4. With the win just within reach Lauren Bowden was the last wicket to fall to Newman but the winning runs came soon after in the 8th over.

Result:

Hampshire Under 15 Girls: 38 all out (Milly Squire 4-9, Lily Helston 3-6)

Devon Under 15 Girls: 39-5

Devon Under 15 Girls won by 5 wickets

Devon Under 13's Win A Thriller Against Somerset Under 13’s

Devon Under 13’s maintained their unbeaten record with a thrilling one run victory over Somerset. Devon’s total of 180-6 was thanks mainly to a magnificent 93 from Tom Lammonby.  Lammonby, who faced 70 balls and hit 16 fours in his innings, featured in a stand of 91 with captain Sam Maunder.  At the halfway stage Devon were 52-2, but scored 128 in the last 20 overs to wrestle the advantage from their first class neighbours.

In reply Somerset were 90-3 at the halfway stage and looked likely winners.  However 4-41 from leg spinner Leon Horn supported by 1-27 in 8 overs from off spinner Chris Yabsley put the brakes on which resulted in Somerset needing 3 to win off the last delivery with one wicket left. Much to Devon’s delight the last man was run out attempting a second run for a tie. Phew!

Result:

Devon: 180-6 (Tom Lammonby 93, Sam Maunder 28, Jamie Khan 20).

Somerset: 179 (Charles Clist 49)

Devon won by 1 run

Devon Under 11’s Beat East Devon Under 12’s

Devon Under 11’s got is some valuable match practice against East Devon Under 12’s. East won toss and decided to bowl in overcast conditions. Devon openers Sam Read and Ollie Hannam put on 29 in 13 overs for the first wicket despite some good line and length bowling from Luke Jefferson and Ben Sapiecha. Jack Moore and Archie Christophers added 21 each to push total towards the magical 3 figures. Wicket Keeper Freddie Ford hit some beautiful drives for his quick 16 to push the Devon total to a competitive 132 in their allotted 40 overs. East Devon suffered an early setback as Alfie Hagan-Burt trapped opener Fearey leg before. Middleton and Doble put on a good partnership for 40 before Max Hancock was brought into the attack. His eight over spell decided the game as he ripped thought the batting order bagging 5 wickets and was well supported by Jack Moore who picked up two wickets. The East were all out for just 109.

Result:

Devon Under 11’s: 132-6 (Jack Moore 21, Archie Christophers 21)

East Devon Under 12’s: 109all out (Luke Jefferson 30, James Doble 25, Max Hancock 5-41)

Devon Under 11’s won by 23 runs

Devon Under 15’s Snatch Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory

According to Manager Alan Swift his Devon Under 15’s have developed the habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in to a fine art. Having been in a position to score something in the region of 250 Devon only totalled 217. Jamie Telford (59) and Charles Fitzroy (50) made the most significant contributions. Between innings Devon thought this may be a defendable total provided they restricted the scoring rate early in the Somerset innings. Unfortunately the openers for Somerset put on 118 for the first wicket with ease. Even then Devon had the opportunity to get back into the game but dropped too many catches which ensured that Somerset reached their target with an over and 4 wickets in hand.
A frustrated and disappointed Swift said, “The reverse cycle of games in the ECB competition, with three of the four being at home provides the opportunity for us to rescue something from what has, so far, been a disappointing season. However this will not happen unless the players show the ability and determination to capitalise on periods in the game when they are in the ascendancy. Losing a county Under15 game is not the end of the world but it is reasonable to expect players of this age to begin to show a greater understanding and awareness of momentum within games, something they have not managed in the four ECB Cup games to date.”

Result:

Devon Under 15’s: 217-7 (Jamie Telford 59, Charlie Fitzroy 50)

Somerset Under 15’s: 218-6 (Dan Wolf 2-22)

Somerset won by 4 wickets

Devon Under 14’s Thrashed by Somerset

It was a bad day at the office for the Devon Under 14’s as they were thrashed by Somerset by 135 runs. Bowling first Devon‘s fielding let them down with missed catches allowing Somerset’s captain, Benedict Gundry, to score 102 which helped his side make a challenging total, on a difficult pitch, of 228-4 off their 45 overs. Pick of the Devon bowlers was Noah Wright’s1-13 off five overs. Devon’s batting never got going and they subsided to a very disappointing 85 all out with Wright top scoring with 20.

Result:

Somerset Under 14’s: 228-4 (Noah Wright 1-13)

Devon Under 14’s: 85 all out (Noah Wright 20)

Devon lost by 135 runs

Devon Under 13’s beat Wales Under 13’s

Devon Under 13’s took on Wales at Newport and travelled back over the River Severn victorious by 41 runs. Batting first the Devon openers put on a quick 52 before Tom Williams was caught for 15 and Mikey Cooper followed soon after run out for 44. Tom Lammonby carried on the good work to top score with 46 and was well supported by Ashley Causey who scored 23. With the Wales spinners bowling with great control a final total of 165-7 seemed to be thirty short of a winning total. However a fine bowling effort by the Devon bowlers backed up by good, tight fielding saw Wales bowled out for only 124. Devon’s most successful bowler was Tom Williams who took 4-21 whilst Callum Worth, Jack Gibbs and Chris Yabsley bowled with great control.

Result:

Devon Under 13’s: 165-7 (Tom Lammonby 46, Mikey Cooper 44, Ashley Causey 23)

Wales Under 13’s: 124 all out (Tom Williams 4-21)

Devon Under 13’s won by 41 runs.

Devon Under 11’s Lose Low Scoring Game

The Devon Under 11’s travelled to Holybourne CC to take on Hampshire Under 11’s and found a difficult pitch affected by rain which resulted in a low scoring but exciting game. Hampshire batted first and struggled against all of the Devon bowlers and could only muster 84 before being all out. Pick of the Devon bowlers was Ollie Pugsley who took a magnificent 5-7 whilst Max Hancock took 2-5 and Will Oxland took 2-28. With the pitch not getting any easier Devon found batting very difficult and subsided to a disappointing 56 all out to lose by 28 runs. Only Ollie Pugsley made double figures, scoring 12.

Result: Hampshire 84 all out (Ollie Pugsley 5-7, Max Hancock 2-5, Will Oxland 2-28)

Devon Under 12’s Win Their Tamar Battle

Devon Under 12s recorded their first victory of the season by defeating Cornwall by 22 runs at Barton CC's Cricketfield Road ground. Devon batted first and lost opener James Degg to an unfortunate run out. Opener Jack Smyly (24) and Ollie O'Livey (17) were getting the innings back on track when O'Livey also fell victim to a run out - the ball from the striking batsman being deflected by the Cornish bowler on to the wicket as he was backing up. Sam Taylor joined Ben Sapiecha with the score on 79 for three. The pair then put on 104 for the fourth wicket with Taylor hitting 60 and Sapiecha carrying his bat for an undefeated 58. Devon finished on 199-5.

Cornwall started off slowly but then upped the momentum and it looked as if Devon's target was in reach. But quickie Jonty Walliker was brought back into the attack to stop the charge with two quick wickets. Opener Lewis Goldsworthy (93no) batted through for the visitors who ended on 177-3.

Manager Jim Parker said: "It was great to win for the first time but even more important and just as enjoyable was the partnership between Ben and Sam who batted very well.  Jonty also did a good job at the end when Cornwall were threatening to make a game of it."

Scoreboard:

Devon 199-5: (Jack Smyly 24, Ben Sapiecha 58no, Sam Taylor 60)

Cornwall 177-3: (Jonty Walliker 2-30)

 Devon won by 22 runs.

Devon Under 14’s Lose To Berkshire but Beat Cornwall

The long trip to Reading for the Devon Under 14’s ended in frustration as they lost to Berkshire by 4 wickets with 10 balls to spare. Batting first Devon had a number of starts but on a difficult pitch no one could go on to make a higher score than Neal Osborn’s 36 not out. Ben Phillips hit a good 35 before being one of the three Devon batsmen to be run out. A total of 178-7 meant that the bowling and fielding had to be at their best but unfortunately the bowling offered a little too much width and not enough pressure could be applied. Osborn followed up his innings with 3-47 to be Devon’s most successful bowler.

Result: Devon 178-7 (Neal Osborn 36*, Ben Phillips 35, Billy Rudolf 29)

Berkshire: 180-6 (Neal Osborn 3-47)

Berkshire won by 4 wickets.

On a beautiful day at Torquay Devon Under 14’s hosted their fiercest rivals from across the Tamar and romped home by 40 runs in a high scoring game. Batting first Devon racked up an impressive 261-7 in 45 overs with opener Harvey Sargent falling agonisingly two runs short of a well deserved century after he was stumped going for the big hit to see himself to three figures.  Sargent was ably supported by Billy Rudolf (30), Noah Wright (34)whilst Neal Osborn smashed a quick 48 not out to see Devon to a very competitive score on a pitch that was taking a lot of spin. With all of the Devon bowlers performing better than against Berkshire, with much tighter lines, Cornwall were always behind the run rate. Matthew Petherbridge backed up a fine spell of slow left arm spin with a great catch at square leg whilst captain Joe Hagan-Burt had the best figures of 2-23. Cornwall closed on 221-8.

Result:

Devon: 261-7 (Harvey Sargent 98, Neal Osborn 48*, Noah Wright 34, Billy Rudolf  30)

Cornwall: 221-8 (Joe Hagan-Burt 2-23, Billy Rudolf 2-42)

Devon won by 40 runs.

DEVON Under 15’s thrashed by Hampshire

It was a magnificent day of glorious sunshine and a typically high quality pitch as the Devon Under 15’s took on their Hampshire counterparts at the magnificent North Devon ground in Instow.
Unfortunately Devon's cricket failed to match the setting and they were comprehensively beaten by 113 runs by a good Hampshire side.
Having been reduced to 19 for 3 and then 163 for 7 there was optimism that Hampshire might be bowled out for under 200. In the event a target to win of 252 was always going to be a big ask despite the excellent pitch. Scoreboard pressure eventually claimed its usual victims as Devon subsided to a very disappointing 138 all out with only Charles Fitzroy (31) and Alfie Huxtable (27) making significant contributions as the rest of the Devon batting folded alarmingly.

Result:

Hampshire: 251 all out. (Ben Steer 3-48, Ben Causey 3-35)

Devon: 138 all out. (Charlie Fitzroy 31, Alfie Huxtable 27)

Devon lost by 113 runs.

Where There’s a Will There’s A Way

The Devon Under 10’s played Oxfordshire Under 10’s at Exeter school and won by 4 wickets thanks mainly to a superb innings of 70 not out off 94 balls by Will Scott-Munden. Chasing Oxfordshire’s 127-6 Scott-Munden proved to be the match winner as he scored more than half of the runs with the next highest score being Joseph Dugay’s 14. Earlier Devon’s bowlers held the upper hand with Rory Medlock taking 2-3 and Sam Jefferson 3-18 as Oxfordshire struggled to 127-6 off their 40 overs.

Result:

Oxfordshire: 127 for 6: (Sam Jefferson 3-18, Rory Medlock 2-3)
Devon: 130 for 6 (Will Scott- Munden 70*)
Devon won by 4wkts

Devon Youth Cricket report 2nd June 2013

Devon Under 12’s So Near Yet So Far

It has been a case of so near yet so far for Devon's under-12 team, losing both their opening games of the season by the tiniest of margins. Their 2013 campaign began against Oxfordshire at Kingston Bagpuize with Oxford batting first and finished on 123 for 4 from their 40 overs. Spinner Sam Carpenter was the most successful Devon bowler in the wickets department with figures of 2-21 from  his seven overs. It was a total which should have been well within Devon's reach and with opener James Degg (28) and Max Mejzner (23) setting the visitors on their way victory seemed on the cards but opening bowler Chapman was brought back into the attack and Devon's middle and lower order crumbled. A nail-biting finish saw them bowled out in the 35th over to lose by just one run.

It was much of the same when Devon travelled to Instow to entertain Wales just a few days later.

Devon batted first. Degg (46) was again in the runs, but the top score went to Jack Smyly with a useful 55.  Devon were well set on 105-1 but that batting collapse raised its head again and Devon finished on 171 all out. Kersley Sutton bowled well for Devon taking 2-9 as the game went down to the wire but it was Wales that just made it past the finishing post with four balls to spare and four wickets in hand.

Manager Jim Parker said: "Both games were extremely close to say the least. On both occasions it was our batting that misfired the most and is something we need to look at. "

Results:

Oxford: 123-4 (Sam Carpenter 2-21)

Devon: 122 (James Degg 28, Max Mejzner 23).

Devon lost by one run.

Devon: 171 (James Degg 46, Jack Smyly 55).

Wales: 172-6 (KersleySutton 2-9)

Devon lost by four wickets.

Devon Under 15’s Struggle Against Spin

Devon Under 15’s played their first two games in the ECB Cup when they travelled to play Berkshire and Bucks over the bank holiday weekend. Unfortunately it was a disappointing start to this season's competition when both games were lost from positions where they might have expected to win.
In the first of these games against Berkshire at Westlake College some wayward early bowling allowed Berkshire to put on 85 for the first wicket with opener Tom Scriven compiling a crucial 110. After reaching 176 for 3 some improved bowling ensured that Berkshire’s final total was only 212, Ben Steer (4-52) and Toby Codd (1-12) were the pick of the Devon bowlers. This seemed a very gettable target particularly when Devon were 62 for 3. Unfortunately the middle order were unable to maintain this position against spin on a turning surface and were eventually dismissed for just 172 with four overs remaining. Ben Steer top scored with 51.

Devon got off to a splendid start against Buckinghamshire at Princes Risborough CC with Toby Codd and Jamie Telford putting on 56 for the first wicket before Codd was unfortunately run out. At 184 for 4 Devon seemed well set for a total in the region of 250 but another collapse against spin saw them dismissed for just 200. This total seemed more than adequate however when Bucks were reduced to 107 for 7 and seemingly out of contention.  Unfortunately some undisciplined bowling and an aggressive 64 not out from Brennan Gough (son of England star Darren) saw Bucks home with six overs to spare.

Result:

Berkshire Under 15’s: 212-9 (Ben Steer 4-52)

Devon Under 15’s: 172 all out (Ben Green 51)

Devon lost by 40 runs

Result:

Devon Under 15’s: 199 all out (Charlie Fitzroy 42, Dan Pyle 33, Jamie Telford 31)

Buckinghamshire Under 15’s: 200-7 (Ben Green 4-50)

Buckinghamshire won by 3 wickets

Convincing Win again For Devon Under 11’s

It was another convincing win for the Devon Under 11’s as they beat Gwent by 5 wickets with 17 overs to spare. Batting first Gwent were soon in trouble after losing 2 wickets early on to Archie Christophers and Alfie Hagan-Burt who both bowled well. Scoring was slow for Gwent who at the halfway point had only mustered 38 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.  Wickets were shared around the Devon bowlers and Gwent eventually struggled to a below par total of 101-9 off their 40 overs.

After tea Devon took the attack to the opposition bowlers with some incredible hits from Luke Medlock (38) and Ollie Hannam (20) which gave Devon the platform  to win the game and after only 7 overs 51 was reached. Once the openers went Devon did lose 3 more wickets to some loose shots but soon reached their target in the 23rd over.

Result:

Gwent: 101-9 (Alfie Hagan-Burt 2-6)

Devon: 104-5, 23 overs (Luke Medlock 38, Ollie Hannam 20)

Devon Won by 5 wickets

Moore of the same from Skipper Jack

Devon Under 11 captain Jack Moore continued where he left off last season with another match winning performance in his team’s first game of the season against neighbours Cornwall. Winning the toss and putting the opposition in to bat Moore soon saw his bowlers on top with Cole Harford taking two early wickets on his way to figures of 4-22. Max Hancock (3-9) picked up three cheap wickets with his well controlled spin and Cornwall were all out for 80. With the score on 21 Devon lost opener Sam Read LBW for 7. Enter Moore to play the innings of the game, hitting the ball beautifully to all parts on his way to an unbeaten 31 as Devon romped home in just 16.3 overs for the loss of only three wickets.

Devon coach, Jason Degg, was delighted with how his team performed in their first game of the season. “We bowled and fielded well with four catches taken and Jack played like we have seen him play over the last two seasons to knock off the runs without any problems which was very pleasing.”

Result:

Cornwall: 80 all out (C Harford 4-22, M Hancock 3-9)

Devon: 81-3 (J Moore 31*)

Devon won by 7 wickets.

Ben Steer’s Under 15’s to Victory

Devon Under 15’s had a good start to the county programme with a great win against Wales: something they had not managed to do in previous years. Having  lost the toss and been asked to field the first hour saw some  accurate bowling  by Plymouth’s Dan Goodey and newcomer Tallan Burns from Lewdown who were ably  supported by some  excellent fielding which reduced Wales to 46 for 5 off 15 overs The highlight being an absolutely stunning catch by Brad Causey to send back Thornton, the Wales captain for four off the bowling of Burns.
Wales made a good recovery in putting on 92 for the sixth wicket.  However they were unable to sustain the recovery and some more accurate bowling by Dan Wolf and Toby Codd saw them dismissed for 169 in the 41st over.
Devon always looked favourites to score the required runs something which was ensured by an excellent unbeaten innings of 54 by captain Ben Steer who was well supported by Dan Wolf (36) a confident 20not out from Charlie Barriball.

Result:

Wales: 169 all out ( Wolf 3-23, Steer 2-11, Codd 2-20, Burns 2-43)

Devon: 170-6 (Steer 54*, Wolf 36, Barriball 20*)

Devon won by 4 wickets.

Under 14’s thrash Gwent

Wright hits a century in record stand with Sargent

The Devon Under14’s travelled to Newport to play Gwent and came away with a resounding victory by 171 runs. Batting first Devon racked up 276-2 off 45 overs. New captain Joe Hagan-Burt from Plymouth CC set the tone with a quick fire 51 off 70 balls but it was the unbeaten partnership of 187 between Harvey Sargent and Noah Wright that was the highlight of the day.  Opener Sargent batted all the way through for 91 not out whilst Wright smashed 104 off only 72 balls. Gwent struggled against all of the Devon bowlers but especially against the spin twins of Petherbridge and Osborn. Cornwood’s Petherbridge took 3-6 off 6 overs on his Devon debut whilst Osborn took 3-7 off 7 overs. Gwent were all out for 105 off 35 overs.

Manager Jon Mears said, “The team showed a great spirit and there were some terrific individual performances. This victory should give the team a fantastic platform to build the season on.”

Result:

Devon: 276-2 (N Wright 104*, H Sargent 91*, J Hagan-Burt 51)

Gwent: 105 all out (Petherbridge 3-6, Osborn 3-7)

Devon won by 171 runs

Devon Under 10’s Open the Season in Style

The Devon Under 10’s had a fine win in their season opener against Dorset at Exeter School.  Bowling first, Devon were in a strong position at drinks with Dorset reeling at 51-4. There was a fine knock from Dorset opener T Prest (72*) as they accelerated after drinks to post a score of 133-5.   Devon made light work chasing down Dorset’s final total setting off at a run-a-ball pace and never looked back as they won with 10 overs to spare.  Will Scott-Munden was the bedrock of the run chase making a measured 59* including 8 fours whilst Elliot Hamilton came in and blasted 22* from 13 balls as Devon raced to an early victory.

Result:

Dorset: 133-5 (T Prest 72*)

Devon: 134-3 (W Scott-Munden 59*, E Hamilton 22*)

 Devon won by 7 wickets.

Devon Under 11’s Find Going Tough At Their Taunton Festival

Day 1 v Wales:

Devon Under 11’s had a steady but slow start against Wales Under 11’s with openers James Degg scoring 28 and Jack Smyly 26. Jonty Walliker steadied the ship after a collapse hitting a much needed 27 and Devon finished on 141.

Wales were more positive in their run chase and managed to build a good platform at the halfway stage with a score of 56-2 after 23 overs. Taking pace off the ball slowed the scoring rate ball and leg spinner Sam Carpenter made inroads with a tight spell of leg spin which included three wickets.  Wales always looked in charge but Devon fought hard to get it down to three needed off the last over. With a wicket falling in this nail biting over bowled by Jack Moore hopes were raised but the three runs were squeezed out and Wales got home with just a ball to spare.

Result:

Devon: 141-8 (Degg 28, Walliker 27, Smyly 26, Taylor 19)

Wales:  142-8

Wales won by 2 wkts

Day 2 v Yorkshire

Devon lost the toss again and were put in to bat. Jack Moore and and James Degg put on a quick 49 for the second wicket before Degg was bowled for 26 and Devon found themselves 78-2 after 20 overs. Moore continued the onslaught and hit a run a ball 53 before he was caught at mid wicket.  This platform allowed Billy Gubb (27*) and Sam Taylor (44*) to continue with the run scoring and pushed the total up to 191-5 with some sparkling running between the wickets.

Yorkshire’s effort to score runs was thwarted by some excellent Devon bowling and fielding.  Devon had to wait until the 17th over until a wicket fell but the total was on just 41.  Another wicket fell soon after but then the rain fell with the score on 80-2 after 30 overs.  The covers went on but it was too heavy and Devon were unlucky not to get more from this game.

Result:

Devon: 191-5 (Moore 53, Taylor 44*, Gubb 27*, Degg 26)

Yorkshire: 80-2 after 30 overs – match abandoned

Day 3 v Buckinghamshire

Bucks won the toss and asked Devon to bat.  This seemed to be a wise choice as two wickets fell in the second over and the scoreboard read 2-2 off two overs.  Opener James Degg and Billy Gubb set about rebuilding the innings and put on a partnership of 33 before Gubb was caught with the score on 35-3.  Ben Sapiecha then partnered Degg for a useful 27 run partnership. Sam Taylor joined Degg and helped see him to his maiden Devon fifty and at lunch the score was 112-4 with 6 overs left.  Degg and Taylor’s partnership finished on 96 but Degg carried his bat for an unbeaten 70 not out in 40 overs and Devon finished on 158-4.

The Bucks openers took the game away from Devon by hitting the bad ball and creating a match winning partnership.  Devon’s bowling just couldn’t create a chance and they had to wait until the 27th over before striking.  The damage had been done and with the score on 113-1 with wickets in hand and 13 overs to hit 46 runs Bucks were in the driving seat.  A hard fight back shown by the Devon bowlers was too little too late and Bucks got over the line with 2 overs to spare.

Result:

Devon: 158-4 (Degg 70*, Taylor 37*)

Bucks: 160-3

Devon lost by 7 wkts

Day 4 v Middlesex

Devon finally won a toss and asked Middlesex to bat.  A wicket in the first over looked promising for Devon and two more quickly fell. At 57-4 after 20 overs it looked like Devon were on top but Middlesex battled hard and managed to finish on 133-9.

A positive start was needed and that’s exactly what James Degg and Billy Gubb gave Devon with a partnership of 48 in seventeen overs and Devon looked in good shape. Gubb hit a magnificent 47 runs but the Devon middle order struggled and wickets kept falling.  Devon slumped to 90-9 in the 33rd over and all looked lost.  A superb 29 run partnership by Lachlan Fulton and Jack Smyly for the last wicket brought Devon very close but they fell short and again Devon couldn’t quite get over the line.

Result:

Middlesex: 133-9 (Sutton 4-26, Moore 2-10)

Devon: 119 all out (Gubb 47)

Devon lost by 14 runs

Day 5 v Cheshire

Cheshire won toss and asked Devon to set a total.  At halfway Devon looked in a great position at 52-2 thanks to a quick fire 23 from Jack Moore. However the middle order collapsed and Devon found themselves on 68-6 with 5 overs left.  A great partnership by Jonty Walliker and Lachlan Fulton gave Devon a total to defend.

Cheshire looked in control and kept wickets intact with their run chase.  Partnerships won the game for them in this format.  Their openers hit 36 runs and a 45 run partnership for the second wicket broke the back of the chase. Cheshire found themselves always looking in control despite it going to the last over which Lachlan Fulton was given the responsibility to bowl.  Another close game but again it ended in another Devon defeat on the final day of the festival.

Result:

Devon: 111-8 (Fulton 25*, Moore 23, Walliker 15*)

Cheshire: 112-2

Devon lost 8 wkts

Manager Ted Ashman said, “This was a Festival of what could have been. We competed in every game but just couldn’t manage to cross over the line. The boys gave it their all and it really could have been so different with a little bit of luck on our side.”

 Yorkshire won the Festival

Devon Under 16’s Narrowly Defeat Warwickshire Under 16’s

Devon Under 16’s travelled to Leamington CC to play Warwickshire Under 16’s and came away with a narrow nine run win thanks mainly to Samuel Wyatt-Haines hitting a run a ball 46 and an undefeated 50 from Jack Maunder in their total of 177 all out in 47.2 overs. The batting was backed up by some miserly bowling from Parminda Singh who took 4-30 from his ten overs and some excellent, wholehearted fielding. Warwickshire were finally all out for 168 with three balls to spare.

Result:

Devon: 177 all out (Wyatt-Haines 46, Maunder 50*, Higgs 26)

Warwickshire: 168 all out (Singh 4-30, Holmes 2-38, Wyatt-Haines 2-40)

Devon won by 9 runs.

Rain Ruins Under 16 Clash with Staffordshire

Devon Under 16’s managed to bat for 112 overs against Staffordshire Under 16’s and racked up an impressive 325-7 before they declared. Skipper Wyatt-Haines continued his fine form to top score with 84, which included nine fours and two sixes. He was well supported by Olli Higgs (45), Jack Maunder (34) and Macaulay Harrison-Hooton (43*).

Staffordshire were competitively placed on 178-3 when the rain came and play was abandoned. Gillam Crouch took all three wickets for Devon.

Result:

Devon: 325-7 (Wyatt-Haines 84, Higgs 45, Maunder 34, Harrison-Hooton 43*, Bess 32*, Richardson 32)

Staffordshire: 178-3 (Crouch 3-31)

Match Abandoned.

Weather Disrupts Devon Under 13’s At Their Taunton Festival

Game 1: Devon Under 13’s v Hampshire Under 13’s

Devon began the festival at King’s College with a tough opening game against Hampshire.

The cause wasn’t helped when Devon lost the toss and were asked to bat on a wet wicket with rain in the air.

The battle was made even harder when openers Harvey Sargent and Noah Wright went without Devon putting a run on the board in the face of some quick Hampshire bowling.

But Finlay Marks (21) and Billy Rudolph (24) dug in to give some hope for Devon as they put on 40 for the third wicket.

After they went, however, it was pretty much downhill for the batting side with only Harry Ward, who scored 16 from 59 balls, showing any kind of resistance as Devon were skitttled out for just 113 in the 48th over.

Ward gave Devon a glimmer of hope with his leg breaks and a return of 2 for 31 from five overs but Hampshire eventually made light work of the total which was never going to be enough, winning in the 22nd over with the loss of just three wickets.

SCOREBOARD:  Devon 113 (Marks 21, Rudolph 24).  Hampshire 114-3 (Ward 2-31). Hampshire won by six wickets.

Game 2: Devon Under 13’s v Lancashire Under 13’s

Some harsh words and home truths were dished out to the squad after the poor performance against Hampshire the day before – and they responded in brilliant fashion giving Lancashire a real run for their money.

Devon won the toss and asked Lancashire to bat on the small pitch six at King’s. A spirited fielding performance backed up with some tight and straight bowling had Lancashire on the back foot. Two catches and a stumping from wicketkeeper Kingsley Latham led the way. So, too, did fine spells from quickies Will Christophers (3-38 from 10 overs) and Ollie Reed (1-15 from 10). There was an edge to Devon in the field for the first time as Lancashire were held to 216-9 from their 50 overs.

Opener Noah Wright’s treatment of the Lancashire opening attack was a joy to behold with an array of drives to all parts of the ground. Unfortunately, he was out caught behind, chasing a wide one for 33 but by that time he had put on 55 for the first wicket with Finlay Marks. Marks went on to anchor the Devon innings with 36 from 97 balls. Christophers (17) tried to up the momentum but the rest of the batting failed to fire and Devon were bowled out for 177 in a game they deserved to win and certainly not lose. The transformation from the Hampshire game had been remarkable.

Scoreboard – Lancashire 216-9 (Christophers 3-38), Devon 177 (Wright 33, Marks 36).  Lancashire won by 39 runs.

Game 3: Devon Under 13’s v Cumbria Under 13’s

This was a rain-reduced 20-20 game and a big test for the players to see if they could fulfil the promise and sustain the improvement showed in the previous day against Lancashire – and they did with our first win of the tournament.

Devon were asked to bat and got off to the worst possible start when they lost openers Harvey Sargent and Noah Wright and third-in Finlay Marks cheaply. But Billy Rudolph (20) and Jack Lockwood (34) turned things around for Devon who settled on 121-8 from their allotted overs.

Will Christophers (3-8) and Rudolph (2-11) made early in-roads into the Cumbrian batting. Then Cumbria looked as if they may be in for a shout until Pieter Keenan (2-22) and Marks (1-10) turned the game Devon’s way. With the support of some spirited fielding Devon bowled out Cumbria for 104 with two balls to spare to win by 17 runs.

SCOREBOARD – Devon 121-8 (Rudolph 20, Lockwood 34), Cumbria 104 (Christophers 3-8, Rudolph 2-11, Keenan 2-22).  Devon won by 17 runs.

Game 4: Devon Under 13’s v Surrey Under 13’s

It was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show for game number four on the main number one pitch at King’s.

Devon won the toss and asked Surrey to bat. Pieter Keenan (2-26) was the pick of the Devon bowlers with some useful contributions from Will Christophers (1-13) and Billy Rudolph (0-23), but Surrey were allowed to gain momentum towards the end of their innings and a total of 170-4 from 40 overs was always going to be a challenge, albeit achievable.

Openers Harvey Sargent and Noah Wright found the going tough as the Surrey bowlers got on top from the word go. Suddenly Devon were 28-4 and well off the pace. Finlay Marks (21) tried to move things along and there was a contribution lower down the order from Ben Phillips (26no).

But Devon found themselves up against the run rate clock and lost wickets at the wrong times to finishing disappointingly on 81-8 - well beaten and not even enough runs even for a losing draw.

SCOREBOARD –Surrey 170-4 (Keenan 2-26), Devon 81-8 (Marks 21, Phillips 26).  Surrey won by 89 runs.

Game 5: Devon Under 13’s v Worcester Under 13’s No play – rain.

Of the festival and season, manager Jim Parker said: “There was some highs and lows which was a reflection of the season. But I and Coach Julian Wyatt have now worked with this group of lads for two years and they have come on in leaps and bounds both as a squad and as individuals. They have been a pleasure to work with and we wish them all the very best for the future. Some of them have shown the potential to go on and become very good cricketers. Their attitude has been first class.”

Singh On Song For Devon Under 16’s

It was an eventful first two day game for Countess Wear’s Parminda Singh whose bowling for Devon Under 16’s against Worcestershire Under 16’s was quite exceptional. At the home of the current Birmingham League Champions, Barnet Green, he took 6-57 off twenty-one overs, which was the tenth best return at Under 16s. Skipper Sam Wyatt-Haines won the toss and his side posted a below par 253 all out with his innings of 57 being the top score. Tom Richardson, Jack Maunder and Dan Powell all reached the forties but were unable to bat on. Their hosts were bowled out for 174 with Ollie Sale and Luke Ansell picking up a couple of wickets apiece to go along with Singh’s magnificent effort. When batting for a second time Devon were unable to build up the momentum needed to set a target but Powell and Sale put on seventy-eight for the eighth wicket (just two short of the record) and both reached forty before time ran out. Devon won on first innings lead.

Result:

Devon: 253 all out (Wyatt- Haines 57, Richardson 47, Powell 47, Maunder 44)

Worcestershire: 174 all out (Singh 6-57, Ansell 2-19, Sale 2-32)

Devon: 166-9 (Powell 46*, Sale 45, Skeemer 30)

Devon won on first innings lead.

Under 14’s Finish season With A Defeat Against Yorkshire

Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat on a beautiful Exmouth pitch and  openers Barnes and Brown comfortably put on 134 for the first wicket in 24 overs before Dan Pyle, the 6th bowler used, made the break though having Brown (53) caught by Dan Goodey. Ben Steer took the first of his 4 wickets by having Barnes caught by Goodey for 73.Two runs later Steer took another wicket, this time caught by Jake Reddick and then Reddick took the next wicket when he had Walmsley LBW.  At 161-4 Yorkshire then staged a recovery before Toby Codd took the first of his two wickets and Yorkshire were soon 197-6. Goodey, who had bowled a good opening spell, then took two wickets to have Yorkshire 224-8. The tail wagged a little before Steer finished the innings off by taking two more wickets and Yorkshire were finally all out for 247.

Given the excellence of the pitch Devon felt 247 was achievable if they batted to their potential and had a good start, something which they have struggled to do all season. Jamie Telford showed the grit determination and character he has all season by battling hard for an excellent 45. Unfortunately he lost Dan Pyle and Jake Reddick early and Devon were 9-2 in the 3rd over. Telford and Ben Green then put on 88 in 19 overs to put Devon in a good position. Telford was out stumped but Green started to bat like has the majority of the season before he clipped a ball to mid wicket for a well made 36. Ben Steer and William Thompson put on 40 in 5 overs until Thompson was bowled by a straight well pitch up ball. Charlie Barriball was next in and he and Steer put on 51 in 12 overs but when Barriball tried to hit over mid on he failed and was caught for 16. Soon after Steer perished for a well played 60 and it was more or less game over but the Devon lower order fought hard and they finished all out for 229, just 18 runs short.

Manager Jon Mears said, “I have really enjoyed the season and the lads company and they have done themselves, their parents and Devon cricket proud. We have played some good cricket, when it finally stopped raining, and I wish them all well for next season.”

Result:

Yorkshire: 247 all out (Steer 4-43, Codd 2-36, Goodey 2-37)

Devon: 229 all out (Steer 60, Telford 45, Green 36)

Yorkshire won by 18 runs

Devon Under 12’s Win their Taunton Festival

Devon Under 12’s season culminated in victory at the ESCA County Festival at King’s College, Taunton. In a strong group with First Class Counties Lancashire, Hampshire, Surrey, Gloucestershire and South African side St. Stithians they remained unbeaten throughout the week.

Day one saw Devon put in to bat against Lancashire. The weather forecast was poor, and the pitch already wet from heavy overnight rain.  Devon struggled against tight Lancashire bowling and only Ashley Causey with 35 scored heavily.  When the heavens opened, and play was abandoned, Devon were 78-4 with only 8 of their overs left.

Result:

Devon 78-4 (Causey 35)    Lancashire DNB
Match Abandoned

Day 2 and heavy early morning rain put paid to any hope of playing a 50 over game on grass, but the Astroturf was playable. A 20 over game ensued against St.Stithians. The strong South African side scored 170 from their allotted overs with leggie Leon Horn being the pick of the bowlers with 2-18 from his 3 overs. There were two wickets each for Kazi Szymanski and Monty Crowe. Bowling the opposition out meant full bonus points and a victory would give the team maximum points. Mikey Cooper set the tone with a 6 from the first ball.  He went on to score a quick 43 and Kazi Szymanski showed his hitting power with an imperious 72.  It took an exceptional catch on the boundary to dismiss him.  James Bovey, visibly nervous, then entered the fray and hit the fourth ball of the final to the midwicket boundary for a four and an excellent four wicket victory.

Result:

St.Stithians: 170 (Horn 2-18)

Devon: 171-1

Devon won by 9 wickets (Szymanski 72, Cooper 43)

Next up were Hampshire who had already beaten Devon earlier in the season. In a game reduced to 40 overs a-side a fine bowling and fielding exhibition saw Hampshire restricted to 127-7. Leon Horn again impressed with 2-17 from 8 overs and was well supported by Jack Gibbs (2-18). The Devon response looked in tatters at 14-4, but two of the previous days heroes came to the rescue. Bovey and Szymanski resisted everything and took the score in to the 80’s before Bovey was dismissed. Skipper Sam Maunder (17*) joined Szymanski (57*) to see his team home.

Result:

Hampshire 127-7 (Horn 2-17, Gibbs 2-18)

Devon: 128-6 (Szymanski 57*)

Devon won by 4 wickets

Thursday’s game against Surrey was key.  Neither side could afford to lose if they wanted to challenge for the trophy.  In another game restricted to 40 overs Surrey batted first and constructed a challenging 147-5 from their 40 overs. Szymanski was the pick of the bowlers with 2-22 from 7 overs, with off spinner Chris Yabsley frugal with 1-24 from 8.  In reply a 2nd wicket stand of 82 between Tom Williams (43) and Tom Lammonby (35) set Devon up with a run chase of 55 from the last 10 overs, with 8 wickets in hand. This proved too big. Under pressure the side subsided to 131-8.  This meant that the final day equation was simple. Devon had to win, with maximum points and hope that Surrey beat St. Stithians on the adjoining pitch.

Result:

Surrey: 147-5 (Szymanski 2-22)

Devon: 131-8 (Williams 43, Lammonby 35)

Draw

Gloucestershire were the opponents.  They too had beaten Devon this season. Put in to bat Devon needed, they thought, 175 to get maximum points in 50 overs. The outfield was very slow and scoring quickly difficult.  Openers Monty Crowe (26) and Causey (22) laid the foundation.  Cameo knocks from Tom Lammonby (32), Sam Maunder (21) and the in form Szymanski (27*) saw the final total reach 171-5. At lunch Devon discovered that, because of wet conditions, maximum bonus points for runs were awarded at 150. This, along with the news that Surrey had dismissed their opponents for 127, meant there was hope in the Devon camp.

Gloucestershire were soon behind the run rate and intent on achieving a draw. With 14 overs left, they were 67-4 and looking comfortable. It took a stunning slip catch by Maunder, off Szymanski, to change the game. Tom Williams then changed ends and took 3 wickets with his left arm spin, aided by Mikey Cooper behind the stumps. The momentum was with Devon and they wrapped up victory with 9 overs to spare.  There was a nervous wait as the points were checked.  Surrey had won their game and Devon were presented with the Festival Shield by former England bowler Andy Caddick and Somerset’s Craig Meschede.  This was first time this trophy had been won by Devon Under 12’s. A hat trick as this squad had won the U10 and U11 Festival in the last two years.

Result:

Devon: 171-5 (Lammonby 32, Szymanski 27*)

Gloucestershire: 116 all out

Devon won by 55 runs

Huxtable and Davies Outstanding for Devon Under 19’s

For every coach and manager of any cricket team there are days when you wonder why you give up so much time and effort for what seems little reward. Most of the Devon managers this year have had games cancelled or curtailed due to the awful weather, seen simple catches dropped, many wides bowled and batsman give their wicket away when well set. Even Andy Flower has a player causing him distress after scoring 149! For Martin Webb he has to book B&B’s for overnight stays, drive the mini-bus and keep the scorer (Elizabeth his wife) happy as well! But there are days when they are reminded why they do the job and the Under 19 game against Wiltshire at Axminster was one such game for Martin.

On a beautiful summer’s day and on a belter of a pitch he saw his Devon side rattle up a score of 324-2 off 50 overs at a rate of 6.48. The Exmouth pair of Barney Huxtable and Rhys Davies put on 216 for the 2nd wicket, just ten shy of the all –time record for the Under 19’s. Captain Huxtable scored a majestic 123 not out off 138 balls, hitting sixteen fours and two sixes. Davies was even more explosive in hitting his 112 which included twelve fours and six cleanly hit sixes off 120 balls. Wiltshire gave the chase a real good go and were finally all out off the last ball of their 50 overs for a very commendable 296.  George Yates took 3-47. “It was Devon Youth cricket at its best,” said a delighted Webb.

Result:

Devon: 324-2 (Huxtable 123*, Davies 112, Bryan 29*)

Wiltshire: 296 all out (Yates 3-47)

Devon won by 28 runs

Devon Under 11’s Lose to Wiltshire Under 11’s

Devon Under 11’s dodged the showers at Exmouth to get a game in against Wiltshire before they went off to their Taunton Festival. Devon won the toss and decided to bat first on a covered dry wicket.  A good steady start was gained for Devon as opener James Degg capitalised on the few bad balls bowled.  At the halfway stage all ten Devon wickets were intact. Degg went LBW for a well constructed 27 and Captain Max Mezjner came and went for a quick-fire 15 which brought Devon Under 10 captain Jack Moore came to the crease.  On the back of his 96 against Cornwall for Devon Under 10’s he quickly moved the score on and aided by Jonty Walliker Devon posted a decent target of 134-5.

Wiltshire started very positively and posted 38 after just 10 overs. Moore removed both openers in successive overs to pin back the onslaught and continual bowling changes were made to unsettle the Wiltshire line up. At 99-6 after 25 overs the game was in the balance.  Devon unfortunately were unable to take a couple of chances and Wiltshire went past the Devon total with 4 overs to spare.

Result

Devon: 134-5 (Moore 38, Degg 27, Walliker 27)

Wiltshire: 135-6 (Moore 2-13)

Wiltshire won by 4 wickets

Devon Under 10’s Too Strong For Herefordshire

The Devon Under 10’s travelled to Pentland Gardens to play Herefordshire.  The hosts won the toss and asked Devon to bat. This seemed a good decision as they soon struck in the 5th over. It was further reinforced by two more wickets in the 7thand 8th overs.  Devon slumped to 47-4 in the 12th and knew they had some rebuilding to do to hold onto their unbeaten record this season. A steady partnership for the next wicket saw Devon back on track and another half century by opener Luke Medlock restored some respectability to Devon’s score.  A super cameo from wicketkeeper Freddie Ford helped to push Devon’s total to 156-8 off their allotted 35 overs.

Herefordshire made a steady start and reached 33-0 off 10 overs. It was the introduction of left arm spinner Will Oxland that changed things and two quick wickets changed the game. Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals and Herefordshire struggled to make any headway and reached just 83-6 after the 35 overs failing to reach 2/3 of the Devon total.

Manager Ted Ashman said, “This was a gutsy performance from the Devon youngsters on a hot afternoon.”

Result:

Devon: 156-8(Medlock 57, Ford 29)

beat

Herefordshire: 83-6 (Oxland 2-12)

Green and Fitzroy’s Partnership The Key as Devon Under 14’s Beat Cornwall

On a difficult pitch at Paul CC, Cornwall, it was a 6th wicket partnership of 60 between Ben Green (60) and Charlie Fitzroy (26) that proved to be the decisive one of the match as Devon complied 157 all out. Coming in at 34-5 Fitzroy proved why he deserved his place in the side as a newcomer this season by supporting the in-form Green with skill and determination. With some good runs for the tail as well Devon probably scored 30 or 40 more than they expected at the halfway stage.

Captain Codd was the pick of the Devon bowlers as his off-spin took 3-23 and he was backed up by some excellent catching including a stunning effort by Jake Reddick as Cornwall subsided from 50-4 to 109 all out in the 40th over.

Devon Under 17’s Lose Two Day Game v Worcestershire but get Revenge in 50 Over Clash

The Devon Under 17’s travelled to Worcestershire to take on their Under 17 counterparts in a two day game followed by a 50 over one day game. Chasing Worcestershire’s first innings total of 255 all out Devon were bowled out for 217 and therefore lost out on the first innings lead rule and only picked up eight points to Worcestershire’s nineteen. Notable performances came from Jack Popham with 3-45 and Dom Bess with 3-52 whilst Samuel Wyatt-Haines continued his good form with 59. Worcestershire had time for a second innings and finished on 155-6 with off-spinner Jack Stephens taking 2-45.

Result:

Worcestershire: 255 all out (Popham 3-45, Bess 3-52) & 155 for 6 (Stephens 2-45)

Devon: 217 all out (Wyatt-Haines 59, Dart 37)

Worcestershire won on first innings lead

In the 50 over game Worcestershire were restricted to 199-8. Quick bowler Hallam Kerton took 2-29 whilst Bess spun his way to 2-28 off his ten overs. Chasing down the total was not a problem as Devon won with more than eight overs to spare. Wyatt-Haines top scored with an undefeated 49 whilst Rhys Davies scored a rapid 45 off 40 balls which included three big sixes.

Result:

Worcestershire: 199-8 (Kerton 2-29, Bess 2-28)

Devon: 200-4 (Wyatt-Haines 49*, Davies 45, Higgs 32)

Devon won by 6 wickets

Devon Under 10’s Remain Unbeaten

Devon Under 10’s won the toss of their penultimate game and on a hard track asked their visitors, Hampshire, to bat. Hampshire made a good start and were 33-0 after 8 overs. Captain Jack Moore brought himself on to take the first wicket and then he handed over to the spinners.  Max Hancock led the spinning attack superbly and was helped by Will Oxland and Will Scott-Munden.  Between them they bowled 20 overs and took 6 wickets ripping the heart out of the Hampshire innings.  Oliver Hannam came on to finish the tail and Hampshire closed on 73all out in the 32nd over. With a low total to defend Devon lost quick wickets due to some poor running between the wickets and they quickly found themselves 37-4 after 9 overs.  Once again Moore steadied the innings and carried Devon past the finishing line without losing any further wickets with solid support from Hannam.

Manager Ted Ashman said, “This was another good, solid performance by the side.”

Result:

Hampshire: 73 all out (Hancock 4-11, Hannam 2-5)

Devon: 74-4 (Moore 38*)

Devon won by 6 wickets

Devon Under 15’s Lose to Hampshire In The ECB Cup But Beat Wales To Finish 2nd In Div 1 Of The ECB Championship

Devon Under 15’s lost their game against Hampshire at Lymington CC and Hampshire deservedly confirmed their place in the national finals. They again proved themselves to be the most accomplished side in the group but as far as Devon were concerned it was another case of  missed opportunities as there were several times in the game when they were in a good position only to throw it away through careless decision making.  At 110 for 3 after 29 overs a score of 230 looked very possible and would have set Hampshire a demanding task.  Losing Jack Maunder who again had compiled 60 typically aggressive runs, at this point proved pivotal.

A number of players got a start to their innings and then threw their wicket away with careless shots and as a consequence Devon were bowled out in 47.5 overs for 202.

Devon Under 14 player, Ben Steer, made his first appearance at this level and had a game to remember as he contributed a valuable 31 and took an astonishingly good catch in the outfield towards the end of the Hampshire innings.

When Hampshire batted they cruised to 32-0 after just 4 overs.  Things had to improve and fortunately they did with another debutant Jamie Drew of Heathcoat CC enabling Devon to gain some control with an accurate spell of bowling.

At 94 - 3  the game was very much in the balance but some  accomplished batting by Hampshire’s Gorvin (67)  and Brown (61*)  turned the game in  Hampshire's favour and they  reached  their target fairly  comfortably with 9  balls  remaining

Manager Alan Swift said, “ The game ended in a sense of frustration as far as we were concerned as we again failed to capitalise on  good positions  because  individuals did not take responsibility for pressing home  the  advantage,  and frustrating because  at times we played some good cricket and  were well in  contention for long periods of the game.”

Devon’s final game in the ECB Championship against Wales was reduced to 40 overs per side after heavy rain at Heathcoat CC. Wales were put in by Devon and made a good start and got to the first drinks break after 20 overs with 81 for 3 on the board.
Devon took 10 catches - some excellent - to keep Wales to 126 all out in their 40 overs. Devon's bowlers shared the spoils, with Matt Skeemer taking 3 for 15.
Devon made hard work of reaching their target but a splendidly resilient 51 by Jack Maunder, a cameo by Reid Mawdsley (23) and a dynamic 16 by Ollie Dawe at the end got Devon home.  The winning runs coming via a huge last over 6 from Ollie Dawe which cleared the pavilion.

Alan Swift felt his team deserved to finish runners up to Hampshire in the Championship. “In the end this was a well merited win which ensured that we finished second in our group behind a very good Hampshire side. Jack Maunder not only kept well all season but also finished with an average of 49 so he can be very pleased with his season,” said the delighted manager.

Green Prolific at Under 14 Festival

Ben Green had a Taunton Festival to remember as he racked up 365 runs over five games at an average of 91.25. He started off with a brilliant 96 as the Devon Under 14’s tried to chase down Derbyshire’s par score 247-8. After a disappointing bowling and fielding display with only Bradley Causey having any control Devon couldn’t have got off to a worse start as they were soon 2-2. Green’s partnerships off 53 with Charlie Barriball (4) for the 4th wicket and 41with Jamie Telford (20) for the 7th stopped the rot but it was a magnificent 83 run partnership with Charlie Fitzroy (25*) for the 9th wicket that got Devon down to 12 needed off the final 12 balls. Unfortunately Green’s dismissal saw Devon having to settle for the draw 5 runs short with 1 wicket in hand at the end of a brilliant fight back.

Result:

Derbyshire: 247- 8 (Causey 2-19)

Devon: 242-9 (Green 96)

Devon losing draw with Derbyshire

Day 2 saw Devon batting first against Gloucestershire. After a steady start a partnership of 62 between Toby Codd (25) and Ben Steer (74) and then one of 83 between Steer and Green (67) allowed Will Thompson to free his arms and smash 44 off 22 balls to get Devon up to a competitive 265-6. Causey again had a good game with the ball as he took two early wickets in two balls to have Gloucestershire reeling at 14-3. Gloucestershire did well to re-build their innings but could never get up with the run rate required thanks to a much better performance in the field from Devon and they finished 84 runs short with 2 wickets in hand as Devon ran out with the bulk of the points in their winning draw.

Result:

Devon: 265-6 (Steer 74, Green 67, Thompson 44*)

Gloucestershire: 181-8 (Causey 4-28, Pyle 2-21)

Devon winning draw with Gloucestershire

Devon came up against some very talented Yorkshire batsmen on day 3 of the festival as the Tykes complied an imposing 258-5. The opening Yorkshire bowlers were impressive as well and soon had Devon 32-3. Again Green (31) steadied the ship and Fitzroy (35) played his best knock for Devon so far but it was the in-form Thompson who again impressed with a hard hitting 70 not out that got his team up to a respectable 188-7 and another losing draw.

Result:

Yorkshire: 258-5 (Codd 2-37)

Devon: 188-7 (Thompson 70*, Fitzroy 35, Green 31)

Devon losing draw with Yorkshire

Dropped catches cost Devon dear as Worcestershire scored 231-6 in the penultimate game of the week. Good bowling from Dan Goodey and Brad Causey (again) kept things in check and Devon felt that with a good start they could get close to chasing down the total. Unfortunately they again had a poor start to the innings and only Green got to grips with the tight Worcestershire bowling in scoring a mature 65 not out. Devon ended well short on 157-8 and had to be content with another losing draw.

Result:

Worcestershire: 231-6 (Causey 2-21, Goodey 2-45)

Devon: 157-8 (Green 65*, Telford 23, Codd 22)

Devon losing draw with Worcestershire

An exciting last game saw Dorset pull off a thrilling victory with an over to spare against the unbeaten Devon team. Earlier Green had finally brought up his maiden county hundred his form had so richly deserved. Not for the first time he had to come in and re-build the innings after another sticky start and he batted with great skill in his chanceless innings of 105. He was finally run out going for a quick single as Devon finished on 228-9. With Thompson (23) being the only other batsman to score more than 20 it put in to context what a fine knock it was from Green. Devon’s bowling lacked a cutting edge apart from Ben Steer’s three wickets as Dorset’s Will Caldwell hit a classy 86 not out to see his team home to a well deserved victory.

Result:

Devon: 228-9 (Green 105, Thompson 23)

Dorset: 229-5 (Steer 3-37)

Dorset won by 5 wickets.

Pyle and Green’s Partnership the Difference in an Excellent Victory Against Gloucestershire

With only three days rest the Devon Under 14’s were again in action, this time in an ECB County Championship game against Gloucestershire. On a difficult Bovey Tracey pitch it was the partnership of 96 between Dan Pyle (53) and Ben Green (49) that in the end proved to be the difference between the two sides. Pyle’s 50 was his first for the county and couldn’t have come at a better time as eight Devon batsman failed to score double figures. With only 181 to defend it needed a good bowling performance from the team and thanks mainly to skipper Toby Codd’s 4-19 and some excellent fielding which included a stunning reaction catch form Dan Wolf Devon ran out easy winners in the end by 72 runs.

Manager Jon Mears was delighted with the win so soon after a gruelling week at the Taunton Festival. “I was delighted for Dan to score his first fifty for the county. He has been given a new role as an opener this year and is growing in to the role nicely and Ben just continued with his fine form that he has shown all season. Most pleasing was the energy in the field considering how tired the boys were.”

Result:

Devon: 181-9 (Pyle 53, Green 49)

Gloucestershire: 109 all out (Codd 4-19, Goodey 2-19, Steer 2-26)

Devon won by 72 runs

Wales Woe As Devon Under 14’s Lose in Newport

Devon Under 14’s seventh game in twelve days proved to be a disappointing performance against their Wales counterparts in another ECB championship game. Devon won the toss and inserted Wales but despite two direct run outs Devon’s fielding, not surprisingly, lacked energy and too many singles were allowed. Devon lacked penetration with their faster bowlers, with Ben Green’s bad back not helping the cause, meaning he had to bowl off spin. Medium pacer Dan Wolf had his best game of the season with the ball and most of the bowlers were economical but overall there was a lack of wicket taking potential which allowed the Wales batsmen to compile a competitive but gettable target. What followed was a very frustrating batting display as again the early order struggled to keep up with the required rate which put too much pressure on the middle and lower order. William Thompson (29) hit a couple of sixes but was caught in the deep going for another and apart from Charlie Barriball, with 34, the rest of the batting couldn’t get going.

“This felt like a game too many in such a short period of time for the lads,” said a disappointed manager, Jon Mears.

Result:

Wales: 187-6 (Wolf 1-14)

Devon: 147 all out (Barriball 34, Thompson 29, Codd 24)

Devon lost by 40 runs

A Great win for the Devon Under 12’s against Berkshire

The Devon Under 12’s put in a fine all round performance against Berkshire. The victory was based around an excellent 106 run opening partnership between Woodbury's Michael Cooper and Ashburton's Ash Causey. This was Cooper's maiden county fifty. And there were also useful contributions from Maunder and Szymanski which helped to get Devon to a challenging total of 199 off their 40 overs.

In reply Berkshire were 73-0 at the halfway stage but Devon exerted huge scoreboard pressure and James Bovey took two vital wickets before Cooper effected two run outs from his wicket keeping position as Berkshire tried to run everything as they tried to chase down the total but on the end Devon ran out winners by 25 runs.

Manager Nigel Ashplant was particularly pleased for Cooper who is in his first season for Devon. "Mikey has threatened a big score and today he delivered.  He also showed hitherto hidden talent when he took the keeping gloves for the last 20 overs.  The whole team responded well under pressure today, and it was a fine team performance."

Result:

Devon: 199-8 (Cooper 66, Causey 44, Maunder 30, Szymanski 29)

Berkshire 174-7 (Szymanski 2-28, Bovey 2-11)

Devon won by 25 runs

Devon Under 10’s Thrash Cornwall

Batting first at St Minver CC the Devon openers had a steady start putting on 48 before the partnership was broken. This brought captain Jack Moore to the crease who played magnificently. He soon lost opener Max Hancock for a very good 29 but that didn’t slow down the scoring rate as he was joined by Cole Harford and the innings changed up another gear.  The pair ran extremely well between the wickets and both played shots that were a joy to watch.  In 16 overs the pair added a partnership of 96 to the Devon total before Cole went for a well constructed 33. Moore continued to play some incredible shots all around the ground and marched on to 94 with one over to go. A maiden century look assured but Moore missed the third ball and was bowled for a magnificent 96. Moore departed to a standing ovation disappointed to have missed his hundred but pleased to have surpassed his previous Devon best of 58 against Cornwall last year. Devon finished on 207-5 off their 40 overs. Cornwall’s reply got off to a sticky start as in the third over William Oxland took two wickets in two balls which Oxland repeated two overs later. This left Cornwall reeling on 5-4 after seven overs. Cornwall did well to bat 35 overs but could only manage 59 runs before being bowled out.

Manager Ted Ashman was full of praise for his captain Moore. “Jack is a very fine cricketer for his age and it was a pleasure to watch his innings. I’m sure a maiden century will come very soon and will be the first of many.”

Result:

Devon: 207-5 (Moore 96, Harford 33, Hancock 29)

Cornwall: 59 all out (Oxland 4-6)

Devon won by 148 runs

Kerton Keeps Devon Under 17’s On Track To Win Their Division

A brilliant maiden Devon fifty by opening bowler Hallam Kerton, followed up by two wickets, helped Devon Under 17’s to draw with Wales and to maintain their chances of winning their division. Going in at 202-6 Kerton hit eight 4’s and one 6 which guided his team to 285 all out Kerton built on good work from skipper Josh Mailing who stroked a classy 67 and ‘keeper Rhys Davies’s 46 compiled in his usual positive manner but it was a record 9th wicket stand of 66 between Kerton and his new ball partner Jack Popham (17*) that took the total to a defendable one. Wales finished on 229-6 when the overs ran out which meant that both teams obtained eight points from the match. Jamie Stephens again bowled his off-spin with great control to take 3-60.

Harrison-Hooton and Richardson Put on 171 as Devon under 16’s Win by 9 Wickets

Macaulay Harrison-Hooton and Tom Richardson put on one hundred and seventy-one runs for the second wicket to lead Devon to a nine wicket win against Cornwall at Cornwood Cricket Club. On winning the toss Cornwall batted and due to two rain breaks the game was reduced to thirty-eight overs a side. They posted 192-3 and for the third time this summer the Devon side struggled to take wickets. It was three fine catches, one spectacularly good by Ollie Sale that took the three that fell. Opener Harry Choules was dismissed with Devon on twenty-five but the second wicket pairing scored at a tremendous pace. Harrision-Hooton's strike rate was 108.14 and Richardson 72.48. This was the third highest Under Sixteen second wicket partnership in Devon history. Harrison-Hooton was on target for a maiden county ton (93 off 86) whilst Richardson (79 off 109) provided excellent support. Devon had seventeen balls to spare when the winning runs were hit.

WEEK ENDING 29TH JULY 2012

Devon Under 11’s beat Gloucestershire Under 11’s Convincingly

A lovely warm sunny day welcomed only the third game from eight scheduled this season to be played for Devon Under 11’s due to the appalling weather.  A great opening spell from openers Kersley Sutton and Jonty Walliker left the visitors 18-0 after 10 overs.  Captain Max Mezjner took the first wicket and this was supported by Sam Carpenter who took the next.  At the midway point Gloucester were 40-2 after 20 overs.  The bowling was rotated between spin and pace and wickets fell at regular intervals with Jack Moore taking two wickets in two balls aided by keeper James Degg who bagged 2 stumpings and a catch in the innings.

Devon responded positively to the run chase despite an early run out and quickly found themselves on 29-1 after 10 overs.  Jack Smyly and Max Mezjner put on a partnership of 35 runs before Mezjner was bowled. This brought Jack Moore to the crease who stayed at the crease for an hour ensuring Devon got home with 8 overs to spare.

Result:

Gloucestershire: 90-9 off 40overs (Carpenter 3-14, Moore 2-10)

Devon: 91-6 off 31.5ov (Moore 30, Mezjner 21)

Devon Under 13’s Walloped by Wiltshire Under13’s

Devon Under 13’s suffered a heavy and disappointing defeat in their latest ECB championship game against Wiltshire.

Devon were asked to bat at the picturesque Steeple Langford CC ground.

A couple of heavy showers made batting a little difficult on a wet and sometimes low wicket but that was no excuse for some of the shot selection as the visitors were skittled out for just 89 in the 31st  over.

Only Billy Rudolph, who grafted for 110 minutes and faced 83 balls for his 32, showed any real application. Next best was 17 from Ben Phillips. No other Devon batsman reached double figures.

Wiltshire made light work of the run-chase winning with 21 overs to spare and for the loss of just one wicket.

Manager Jim Parker said: “This was an extremely disappointing result. We made great strides and showed some real spirit against Berkshire the week before. We seem to take one step forward and two steps back but just hope the group are learning by their mistakes.  Credit must go to Billy.  We probably had the worst of the conditions but the boys know we should have done a lot, lot better. That game has gone now and we must pick up ourselves for our last ECB game against Gloucester and the forthcoming festival at King’s College, Taunton. “

Result:

Devon: 89 (Rudolph 32)

Wiltshire: 90-1.

Wiltshire won by nine wickets.

Devon Under 12’s Lose Tight Game Against Gloucestershire Under 12’s but are soundly beaten by Hampshire Under 12’s

On a boiling hot day the Devon Under 12’s pushed their Gloucestershire counterparts all the way but lost with only eight balls to go. Batting first Devon owed their total of 180-2 thanks mainly to a 96 run partnership for the third wicket between Ashley Causey (71*) and Sam Maunder (47*). Although opening bowler Kazi Szymanski bowled with his usual accuracy to take 3-16 Devon’s spinners could not contain the Gloucestershire batsmen as they got home with four wickets to spare. Manager Nigel Ashplant said, “It was a disappointing end to a day which promised much.  There were several plusses including the partnership between Ash and Sam and the bowling of Kazi. We also ran between the wickets very well. There are things to work on such as rotating the strike against good spinners and learning how to bowl to batters who sweep and managing our fielding under pressure.”

Result:

Devon: 180-2 (Causey 71*, Maunder 47*)

Gloucestershire 181-6 (Szymanski 3-16)

Gloucestershire won by 6 wickets

Devon elected to bowl first on a damp wicket against Hampshire Under 12’s, but were unable to exert any early control.  Hampshire reached 74 without loss before off spinner Chris Yabsley dismissed both openers. With leg spinner Leon Horn taking 3 wickets at the other end Devon reduced the visitors to 131-7 but the rest of the bowling was unable to press home their advantage and Devon allowed Hampshire to reach 197. Devon shuffled their batting order to give opportunities to those who have been limited by the wet summer and despite a belligerent 32 from James Bovey it needed Sam Maunder and Tom Williams, who had both dropped down the order, to give the score some respectability.  They put on 52 for the 9th wicket but Devon eventually succumbed to 128 all out.

Result:

Hampshire: 197 all out (Yabsley 3-19, Horn 3-39)

Devon: 128 all out (Maunder 24*, James Bovey 32)

Hampshire won by 69 runs

Devon Under 17’s lose 50 over game v Somerset Under 17’s but get the best of a draw in the 2 Day Game

The appalling number of wides bowled by the Devon Under 17 bowlers came back to haunt them as they lost by 43 runs as they tried to chase down the 239- 7 set by Somerset. The 37 wides plus 3 no balls were basically the difference between the two sides as Devon finished 43 runs short in their run chase. Bowling first Devon had Somerset under the cosh at 131-6 but an excellent 7th wicket stand of 94 off 16 overs saw the home side to a competitive total. Once again Samuel Wyatt-Haines was Devon’s main run scorer as he continued his excellent run of form with a fine 68 but with only skipper Josh Mailing and Ryan Rickard scoring more than 30 Devon couldn’t make up for their wayward bowling effort and they were finally all out with more than 3 overs to spare.

Result:

Somerset: 239-7 (Mailing 2-46)

Devon: 196 all out (Wyatt-Haines 68, Mailing 33, Rickard 30)

Devon lost by 43 runs

A much improved bowling performance from the Devon backed up by some exceptional slip catching saw Somerset slip to 101-9 in the following two day game at Taunton Vale CC. What followed was a truly remarkable last wicket partnership between Godmon, who was on thirty-one, and Veal. Nearly four hours later on the second morning they were still together! Astonishingly 231 were added for the last wicket with Godmon finishing on a magnificent 173 not out and Veal finally out for a brilliant 73. Somerset were all out for 332 off 115.5 overs. Devon’s best bowling figures were Hallam Kerton’s 4-87 who was backed up excellently by newcomer Jamie Stephens from Tavistock who bowled his off-spin with great control to take 2-52 off 23.5 overs.

Devon had 88 overs to try and get a first innings lead, which would earn them a 10 point bonus and they fell agonisingly 18 runs short with 2wickets in hand when time ran out. It was a good all-round batting scorecard with nine batsmen all getting in to double figures but it lacked the one big innings needed with the top score being 45 from Rhys Davies.

Result:

Somerset: 332 all out (Kerton 4-87, Popham 3-61, Stephens 2-52)

Devon: 314-8 (Davies 45, Higgs37, Mailing 35, Penrice 35)

Devon 11 points, Somerset 9 points

Week ending 22nd July 2012

Devon Under 10’s Runners-Up at the King’s Taunton Festival

The Devon Under 10’s had a good King’s Taunton festival finishing runners-up to Middlesex

Team manager Nigel Ashplant was full of praise "This was a great performance from the whole team, led by a sparkling innings of controlled hitting from Kazi. In this form he is difficult for any side to contain. Our fielding and bowling was much improved and the side now knows the level it can perform at.  The trick will be doing it consistently"

Result:

Wales: 145-5 (Szymanski 2-27, Yabsley 8-3-11-1)

Devon: 146-6 (Szymanski 49*, Causey 20, Crowe 18)

Devon won by 4 wickets

Devon Under 13’s Beat Gwent but lose to Berkshire

Devon’s Under 13’s dodged between the showers to record a win over Gwent in a friendly at Brixham CC. Ben Philips took the batting honours with an impressive 76no as Devon posted a first innings total of 184-7.  Philips’ knock included 10 fours with an array of impressive, attacking shots, especially straight drives.  Alex Hannam chipped in with a valuable 21no at the end of the innings for the home county. Gwent were restricted to 149-8 in their 40 overs. Spinners Jack Lockwood (2-12) and Harry Ward (2-18) took the pace off the ball well to turn the game Devon’s way.

Result:

Devon 184-7 (Phillips 76no, Hannam 21no),

Gwent 149-8 (Lockwood 2-12, Ward 2-18)

Devon won by 35 runs

It was back to the serious stuff and an ECB encounter with Berkshire at Barton CC.  The visitors opted to bat first and ran up a formidable total of 189-6 from their 40 overs. Opening bowlers Ollie Reed (2-42) and Alex Hartridge (2-18) bowled well early on to make some in-roads into the Berkshire batting order, but the visitors put the pressure on late on and probably scored 30 or so runs too many in their last 10 overs.

Devon openers Noah Wright (35) and Harvey Sargent got Devon off to a flying start. When Wright went it was left to Sidmouth’s Sargent to try to lead Devon home to victory. He ended up with a patient 58 from 72 balls and spanning 105 minutes. When he was given out LBW, Devon suffered a batting collapse with only one other player reaching double figures. Last pair Ollie Reed and Alex Hartridge fought right to the end as the Berkshire finger nails became shorter and shorter but the hosts eventually finished 10 runs short.

Manager Jim Parker said: “It was encouraging to see Ben putting into practice what we had focussed on during the winter in his innings against Gwent and Harry and Jack showed the importance of using spin.  The Berkshire defeat was obviously disappointing but there were some real positives to come from the game. Harvey batted extremely well and Ollie and Alex showed a lot of pace early on. It was also good to see the side not going down without a fight – something which may not have happened this time last year.”

Result:

Berkshire: 189-6 (Reed 2-42, Hartridge 2-21)

Devon 179: (Sargent 58, Wright 35).

Berkshire won by 10 runs.

by 3 points. Their first game was against Berkshire on a damp pitch and under leaden skies. Devon openers Luke Medlock and Will Scott-Munden put on a solid 37 for the first wicket. At half way Devon were 56-2 thanks to a good partnership between twins Luke and Cole Harford. Luke was caught for a top score of 29. Some great boundaries by Ollie Hannam (23) pushed Devon to a respectable first day score of 147-7 at the end of their overs. Unfortunately Berkshire didn’t get a chance to bat for long as the heavens opened and play was abandoned for the day with them on 7-0.

Result:
Devon 147-7 (L Harford 29, O Hannam 23)
Berkshire 7-0

Match Abandoned

Day 2 v Middlesex
A hard fought first session saw Devon drop 3 catches allowing Middlesex to get off to a good start. Alfie Hagan-Burt removed one opener and spinner Max Hancock removed the other. Middlesex were gifted several more chances and after 22 overs were 120-2. A double wicket maiden from James White, a fantastic direct hit run out from captain Jack Moore and a 3 wicket haul from Will Scott-Munden, which included 2 superb stumpings from vice captain Freddie Ford, helped to slow up the run rate.
Requiring a patient and steady reply Devon lost both openers within 4 overs which brought Jack Moore and James White to the crease. Moore and White batted for over an hour and half and helped Devon to a respectable 146-9. Sam Read dug in at the end to deprive Middlesex of the win in a nail biting conclusion to a great game.

Result:

Middlesex 197 all out (W Scott-Munden 3-38)

Devon 146-9 (Moore 29, White 29, Read 21*)

Middlesex winning draw

Day 3 v Surrey
A great spell of bowling by Alfie Hagan-Burt saw him remove both openers inside ten overs with only 23 runs on the board. Devon had to be patient by waiting another ten overs before leg spinner Will Scott-Munden gained another wicket with the aid of Freddie Ford claiming another stumping.  Spin being the way forward saw another spinner, Will Oxland, get two more wickets with a lovely display of variety. This steady fall of wickets was backed up by some incredible fielding with skipper Jack Moore leading the way in what was a display of sensational under 10 cricket.

Devon replied with purpose despite this being the final day of a tiring festival. Cole Harford was lost in the 6th over but this was the only wicket to fall in the run chase. Luke Medlock and Jack Moore put on a match winning partnership of 111 in just 21 overs with a magnificent display of stroke play despite Surrey deploying nine bowlers to try and break the partnership. Luke was unbeaten on 64 and Jack was unbeaten on 33. This batting display was a joy to see and even the Surrey parents enjoyed the stroke play and were extremely complimentary about the efforts they saw.

Manger Ted Ashman said, “It was a superb effort from start to finish from the Devon team led by Jack Moore who was making his third under 10 festival appearance. The team played better with each day and I was very proud of them.”

Result:

Surrey 126-8 (Hagan-Burt 2-14, Oxland 2-16)

 Devon 127-1 (Medlock64*, Moore 33*)

Devon won by 9 wickets

Popham and Wyatt-Haines Magnificent As Devon Under 17’s Beat Hampshire Under 17’s

Devon under 17s beat Hampshire in a rain affected game two day game at Torquay. They bowled their opponents out for 196 in 62 overs with Barnstaple’s Jack Popham taking 5-59 off seventeen overs with excellent back up from Sidmouth’s off-spinner, Dom Bess (3-46). They were well supported in the field with Jack Dart taking two fine catches.

Devon had already lost opener Ben Stein to a hip injury sustained in the field and were soon two men down as Mawgan Penrice was rushed to Torbay’s A & E with what transpired to be only a bruised instep. Luckily he was able to return for the second day’s play. Devon reached 94-2 at close of day one thanks to Rhys Davies and Samuel Wyatt-Haines who put on a vital stand of 58. On the second day Devon had another 50 overs to score the outstanding 102 needed for a first innings lead. They reached this target in the sixty-ninth over thanks to a partnership of 132 by Sam Wyatt-Haines and Jack Dart. Wyatt-Haines scored 108 which was his fourth century in his last five county innings. Dart scored a fine 46. This was the third highest under 17 stand for the fourth wicket in history. Devon then had 124 balls to score the 104 needed for two more bonus points but disappointingly only took one point before captain Josh Mailling called them in on 269 with eight balls unused. Penrice, who had fortunately been able to return to the crease, was unbeaten on 31.

Result:

Hampshire U17’s: 196 all out (Popham 5-59, Bess 3-46)

Devon U17’s: 269-6 (Wyatt-Haines 108, Dart 46, Davies 33, Penrice 31*)

Devon won on first innings lead

Maunder Marvellous but Under 15’s Fall Fifteen Short

Chasing down Hampshire Under 15’s 220-8 the Devon Under 15’s finished 15 runs short on 205 all out with 7 balls to spare in an exciting run chase at Sidmouth.  This was hard on Devon wicket-keeper Jack Maunder who scored a superb 104 off 144 balls. Going it at number 3 he batted for 158 minutes before being the ninth man out with the score on 202. Not for the first time this season the rest of the Devon batting was found wanting as only Reid Mawdsley (23) scored more than 20.

Earlier Hampshire’s Andrew Gorvin had compiled a classy 109 off 121 balls as he helped his team set a challenging total off their 50 overs. The most successful Devon bowler was Ollie Dawe with four wickets and there were three run outs but despite these good moments the Devon fielding again was poor which it was in the previous game against Wales. This had proved to be costly then and did so again as Hampshire scored 51off their last 28 balls.

Manager Alan Swift was left frustrated by the lack of support for Maunder. “Jack batted with great skill and maturity but once again too many of the batsmen are struggling to find form which is not surprising considering how much cricket has been lost due to the weather. One more decent partnership and we might have won.”

Result:

Hampshire: 220-8 (Dawe 4-51)

Devon: 205 all out 48.5 overs (Maunder 104, Mawdsley 23)

Hampshire won by 15 runs

Super Szymanski Slays the Dragons

Devon Under 12’s took on Wales Under 12’s at Lewdown and were victorious by 4 wickets thanks to a superb all-round performance from in swing bowler and hard hitting batsman Kazi Szymanski.  He was well supported by off spinner Chris Yabsley, who took 1-11 from his 8 overs, and a scintillating fielding performance led by Leon Horn.

Szymanski made light of the target with 49 not out from 30 balls with 6 fours.  He was well supported by Monty Crowe (18) in a stand of 46, after Ash Causey (20) had laid the foundations.

Powell and Ansley Nearly Achieve a Remarkable Comeback

Thanks to the efficiency and co-operation of the ground staff at Newport CC the Devon Under 15’s managed to get a prompt start against Wales Under 15’s despite the recent terrible weather.

Devon won the toss and chose to field first, thinking that the pitch might have some early life in it given the conditions and Ollie Dawe and Hugo Whitlock gave Devon a confident start with the ball and were unfortunate not to get some early wickets as both openers played and missed several times.  However, Wales’ Thorpe and Harris played cautiously putting on 35 for the first wicket. Plymouth’s Dan Goodey, promoted from the Under 14s, was playing his first game for the Under 15’s and coped well in taking 1 for 39 from his 9 overs and was well supported by Jack Thomas (2-36) and Matt Skeemer (2-39).

For much of the Wales’ innings neither side was able to establish any ascendancy but it became clear that anything above 150 would be difficult to chase. Devon became ragged in the field as the Wales innings progressed which allowed Wales to reach 200 for 6 off their 50 overs. Thorpe showed excellent application in reaching a top score of 96 before being run out by a direct hit from Skeemer. The target would have been much lower if Devon had taken their catches particularly two opportunities to dismiss Thorpe.

Devon’s reply couldn’t have got off to a worse start as they soon collapsed to 10 for 5, due principally to some accurate seam bowling by Carey and Eakins (the latter finishing with 6 for29) which left Devon with the proverbial mountain to climb.

What followed was a remarkable stand of 120 by Dan Powell and Seb Ansley who contributed 71 and 65 respectively: a really outstanding performance, particularly in the context of the game. When Ansley was dismissed Devon were in with a real chance of securing a surprising victory. Dom Bess (22) and Powell put on 40 but when Powell went caught off his 130th ball Devon’s last three wickets fell for 9 runs to leave Wales winners by 21 runs.

Manager Alan Swift said, “We had 8 batsmen fail to get into double figures which really does show what a brilliant partnership Seb and Dan put on. Thank heaven they did as it could have been very embarrassing! They showed great heart and character but in the end Wales were just a little more clinical than us.”

Result:

Wales Under 15’s: 200-6 (Thomas 2-36, Skeemer 2-39)

Devon Under 15’s: 179 all out (Powell 71, Ansley 65)

Wales won by 21 runs

Wyatt-Haines hits 111* for Devon Under 16’s v Gloucester Under 16’s

(but rain has the final say!)

A brilliant 111 not out by captain Samuel Wyatt-Haines saw the Devon Under 16’s post a competitive 263-4 off 66 overs against their Gloucestershire counterparts. In reply Gloucestershire were 245-4 off 44 overs at the end of the first day of the two day game but as has come as the norm this summer the second day was completely washed out, leaving the result as a draw.

Wyatt-Haines came to the crease with the score on 72-3 and batted through to the end, hitting 9 fours and 4 sixes off 114 balls faced.  Decline Lines supported his skipper sensibly scoring 33 not out as they put on 138 unbeaten for the fifth wicket.

Apart from opening fast bowler Ben Holmes (2-25) the Devon bowlers struggled on the excellent Instow pitch as Gloucestershire’s opening batman Tom Smith smashed the bowlers to all parts on his way to a magnificent 151not out off 124 balls before time was called at the end of the first day. He was unable to add to his total the next morning as the rains came and the game was called off. Added to his 4-87 Smith fully deserved the man of the match award.

Result:

Devon Under 15’s: 263-4 off 66 overs (Wyatt-Haines 111*, Lines 33* Higgs 32)

Gloucestershire Under 15’s: 245-4 (Holmes 2-25)

Match abandoned as a draw

 WEEK ENDING 1ST JULY

Super Ben Steers Under 14’s to Victory

Thanks to the incredible hard work from Thorveton CC, after another appalling week of weather, Devon Under 14’s were able to get a full game in against Berkshire and were delighted to come away with a 23 run victory in a low scoring but hard fought game. Having been inserted Devon found batting difficult and no batsman was able to score more than Jake Reddick’s top score of 19 in a final total of 121 all out. At 52-1 it looked liked Berkshire were cruising to victory until captain Toby Codd brought himself on and his off spin proved to be the key to breaking the back of Berkshire’s batting line up. With Jamie Telford executing a brilliant leg side stumping of the medium pace of Dan Wolf Berkshire were soon 59-6.  Ben Steer raped things up with 3 wickets in 2 overs to leave manager Jon Mears delighted with his team’s fighting spirit.

“We bowled straight, only one wide, our fielding was intense and of a high standard, something we had practiced over the winter, which together applied the pressure which in turn led to wickets falling and us winning,” said Mears.

Scorecard:

Devon 121 all out ( J Reddick 19, D Pyle 18)

Berkshire 98 all out ( B Steer 3-24, T Codd 3-20)

Devon won by 23 runs.

Magnificent Maunder’s Innings in Vain

Devon Under 12’s game against Dorset at Axminster saw an exciting game finish with Dorset winning narrowly by 2 wickets as they chased down Devon’s 162-8. The home side’s innings was built around a tremendous innings of 78 from captain Sam Maunder. Maunder batted from the 8th over until the last ball of the innings and controlled the game. He was well supported by Ashley Causey in a stand of 68. In reply Dorset reached their target with 10 balls to spare. Kazi Szymanski was the pick of the bowlers with a hostile spell of 3-26 but Devon were left to regret that the top scorer for Dorset was extras with 51!

A disappointed Devon manager Nigel Ashplant said, "We batted well and Sam Maunder played superbly. His partnership with Ashley Causey was full of mature cricket and put us in to a position to control the game. Unfortunately we bowled poorly. 31 wides is too many at this level, and those runs, along with the 5 extra overs this gave Dorset, was the difference between winning and losing. It was especially disappointing as we had bowled so well, and with great control in our previous game.”

This is a good team, with a desire to do well, and I am sure they will go away and work on their bowling disciplines.  I look forward to an improved performance in their next game on 15th July."

Result:

Devon 162-8 (Sam Maunder 78, Ashley Causey 21, Mikey Cooper 19)

Dorset 163-8 (Kazi Szymanski 3-26)

Dorset won by 2 wickets

Devon Under 19’s Defeat Worcestershire Academy

After winning the toss Devon Under 19’s elected to field against the Worcestershire County Academy side but did not field to the high standard they normally set themselves and chances were missed which would have been expected to have been taken. Debutant Will Squire entered the attack in the sixteenth over and with his eleventh ball he removed Worcestershire’s second team opener Carasco with Josh Mailling taking the catch. The Worcestershire captain Rhodes was holding his side together as Squire took his second and the side’s third wicket in the twenty-eighth over when Matt Kidd held Clarke on the rope. This brought another of a number of county second team players, Ollie Steele, to the crease. He had scored a century against the county at Exmouth in 2011. He is another talented player but lasted only twenty-three balls when Kidd took his first wicket with Rhys Davies taking a skyer. Four down with 115 on the board and nine overs left. The home side then scored at just under four and a half an over losing five more wickets as Devon dictated the play. Kidd took the next two wickets bowling Harris and trapping Joshi leg before. George Yates then took the remaining three wickets including the vital one of Rhodes caught by the ever reliable Matt Golding. His contribution had been an outstanding seventy-six ball sixty-two. This was the top score of the game. In the same over Yates then bowled Charwood and in his next over he dismissed Underwood in an identical fashion. The last pairing put on another couple of runs as Worcestershire finished on 156-9.

With captain Barney Huxtable going early Josh Mailling and number 3 Zack Bess then compiled the best partnership of the game putting on fifty-five. They looked in total control until Bess chanced the arm of mid wicket and was run out by a whisker with a direct hit. Mailling was batting very sensibly but lost a decidedly unwell Golding with eight still needed for the hundred. Devon reached three figures in the twenty-seventh over but in the next over Mailing went bowled trying to sweep and missing. With Rhys Davies batting intelligently he and Harry Booker comfortably put on the remaining fifty-two and the game was won. Davies struck a couple of trademark straight sixes which both ended up in the car park behind the pavilion. Davies was unbeaten on 35 and Booker 18 not out as Devon ran out decisive winners by 6 wickets.

Result:

Worcestershire CCC Academy: 156-9 (Kidd 3-22, Yates 3-29, Squire 2-29)

Devon Under 19’s: 157-4 (Mailing 33, Davies 35* Bess 26)

Devon won by 6 wickets.

Week ending 17th June 2012
Super Sargent Steers Under 13’s to Victory

Opener Harvey Sargent led the way as Devon under-13s secured their first ECB championship win of the season with a four-wicket victory over Dorset at Axminster. Sidmouth batsman Sargent’s 61 from 92 balls, which included 10 fours, was the platform for Devon’s successful run chase. Dorset were inserted and finished on 152-5 – a decent score on a challenging wicket due to the recent wet weather.Key to keeping the runs down was bowling full and straight – something Billy Rudolph (3-15) did exceptionally well for the home county who also gave a good all-round team performance in the field. Sargent and Abbotskerswell’s Noah Wright put on 44 for the first wicket. The partnership which really set Devon up for the win was for the third wicket when Sargent and Joe Hagan-Burt (18) came together for a 52-run stand. Rudolph (19no) was there at the end to complete a good day individually with both bat and ball, as Devon won in the 39th over.

Manager Jim Parker said: “This is just what the squad needed, a win to boost confidence and make the lads believe in themselves. Harvey batted extremely well and with great maturity, combining patience with putting away the bad ball which was absolutely key to batting on this kind of track. Billy also put in a good all-round performance.  In a way it was good (not for Harvey, of course) that he got out because it meant other members of the team had to stand up and be counted which they did. They showed something for which I and coach Julian Wyatt have been looking since we started with them as under-12s last year – a bit of bottle. The goal now is to keep the momentum going and showing more of the same against Somerset.”

Result:
Dorset 152-5 (Rudolph 3-15)
Devon 155-6 (Sargent 61, Wright 20, Hagan-Burt 18, Rudolph 19no)
Devon won by four wickets.

Dawe and Bess Sink Somerset

Devon Under 15’s managed to dodge the showers at Weston-Super-Mare to record a comprehensive win over neighbours Somerset in their ECB National competition. The victory was down mainly to a fine bowling performance especially from Ollie Dawe and Dom Bess who took four and three wickets respectively which saw Somerset bundled out for only 113 in 37.2 overs

Knocking off the runs wasn’t too difficult with opener Matt Skeemer scoring 33 and captain Jack Maunder scoring an undefeated 30 to see Devon home with only 31.5 overs gone.

Manager Alan Swift was surprised that Somerset chose to bat after winning the toss. “With all of the recent rain we were desperate to bowl first so when Somerset opted to bat first we were delighted but we still needed to bowl well which Ollie and Dom did. We also batted with good technique and skill so it was a very pleasing day all round.

                                                          Week ending 10th June

Devon Under 15s Start with a Victory

The Devon Under 15’s won their first game in Division One of the ECB Under 15 County Cup at North Devon Cricket club against Gloucestershire thanks mainly to a fine innings from skipper Marcus Hoddinott.
Having won the toss Gloucestershire seemed well placed at 60 for 2 having taken advantage of some indifferent bowling. Devon established some control of the run rate thanks to some accurate bowling by Hugo Whitlock (making his county debut), Matt Skeemer and Dom Bess. Wickets began to fall regularly with Ben Roberts taking 3-20 and it needed some lusty blows from Gloucestershire’s number nine Bond for them to reach an all out total of 164.
This appeared a straightforward task for Devon on the excellent North Devon pitch but they found themselves in some difficulty at 53-4.  Thankfully captain Hoddinott batted superbly to score 57 and he was ably assisted by Henry Gater (37) which ensured the target was reached with 5 overs to spare.

Manager Alan Swift was pleased to have started the season with a victory but feels that they will come up against stronger teams in the season. “ We looked a bit under-cooked and our middle order will need to contribute a lot more if we are to win against the stronger sides.”

Result:
Gloucestershire 164 all out (B Roberts 3-30, J Thomas 2-21, O Dawe 2-29, D Bess 2-32)
Devon 169-6 ( M Hoddinott 57, H Gater 37, S Ansley 25*)
Devon won by 4 wickets

Devon Under 12’s Frustrated by the Rain

Devon did well to get any sort of play against Cornwall.  The goodwill of the opposition, positive action by the umpires and the St. Austell ground staff meant that the game started on time.  Cornwall won the toss and decided to bat, in the belief that bowling and fielding would be difficult with a wet ball.  Kaz Szymanski and Matt Parker(on debut) bowled tightly to restrict Cornwall to 18-0 from the first 10 overs.

The introduction of spin from Chris Yabsley changed the game, as he bowled an superb spell of 5 overs taking 3 for 3. James Bovey at the other end took 2-16 with his tight medium pace. Tom Williams then took over from off spinner Yabsley and took 2-7 with his slow left armers and Monty Crowe wrapped up the tail with a quick burst taking 3-7. Unfortunately heavy rain at tea prevented Devon batting.

Manager Nigel Ashplant was delighted with the bowling and fielding.  He said, "This was a much improved performance from the week before.  Wides were kept to a minimum, on a difficult day for bowling, and our fielding was much sharper.  Ash Causey took two blinding catches in the slips and skipper Sam Maunder gave a virtuoso display behind the stumps.

It was a shame the weather closed in. The boys wanted to show how much they had learned from last week’s poor batting performance".

Result: Cornwall 66 all out (C.Yabsley 3-3, M.Crowe 3-7, T.Williams 2-7, J.Bovey 2-16)

Devon Did Not Bat

 Match abandoned as a draw.

Week ending 3rd June 2012

Medlock Magnificent Again for Devon Under 10’s

Paignton’s Luke Medlock followed up his 6 wickets (including a hat-trick) last week with a magnificent 81 against Gwent. Medlock hit 15 fours and a six and along with an aggressive 53 not out from captain Jack Moore (Barnstable) and 31 from Barton’s Cole Harford  saw Devon post an imposing 220-4 off 35 overs.

A fine spell of bowling from Plymouth’s Alfie Hagan- Burt (3-15) which saw him take a brilliant diving caught and bowled backed up by an even better catch by Harford saw Gwent bowled out for 86 leaving Devon winners by a massive 134 runs.

A delighted Devon manager, Ted Ashman, said, “This was an excellent performance by the team. There were three outstanding innings by Luke, Jack and Cole and our bowling was good backed up by some truly exceptional fielding.”

Devon 220-4 off 35 overs ( Medlock 81, Moore 53, Harford 31)

Gwent 86all out off 29.2 overs ( Hagan- Burt 3-15)

Devon won by 134 runs.

Under 12’s Narrowly Beat Oxfordshire

Devon Under 12's narrowly won their first game by 1 wicket at Barton against Oxfordshire.  Having been put in to bat Oxfordshire were threatening a big total at 63-1 however tight bowling from spin duo Chris Yabsley and newcomer Lewdown’s Leon Horn put the brakes on and wickets were lost in the search for runs at the end of the innings.  There were two wickets a piece on debut for Leon Horn and Exeter’s James Bovey.

In reply to Oxfordshire’s 112 Devon did their best to keep the game exciting.  Poor shot selection and running between the wickets meant the last pair were at the wicket with 2 needed to win.  A mature innings from Bovey Tracey’s Kazi Szymanski ( 24*) and a boundary from another debutant Callum Worth (Tavistock) saw Devon home.

Birthday boy Jack Gibbs (Newton Tracey) had a fine all round game, taking 2 wickets and top scoring with 27 runs.

Manager Nigel Ashplant reflected, "The team looked rusty, but still managed to win.  There were plenty of positives, especially the performances of the debutants. There is plenty to work on as we bowled far too many wides, were guilty of poor shot selection and there was some comical running between the wickets.”

Oxfordshire 112 all out off 34 overs (Gibbs 2-7. Bovey 2-9 Horn 2-22)

Devon 116-9 off 27 overs (Gibbs 27, Szymanski 24*)

Devon won by 1 wicket
Devon Under 13’s Thrashed by Hampshire

Devon Under 13’s started their ECB campaign with a disappointing eight wicket defeat in Hampshire. Devon's first innings total of 93 all out was never going to be challenging for a strong Hampshire side. Taking into account that nine Devon batsmen failed to reach double figures it was a relief that Abbotskerswell opener Noah Wright showed promise with 24 and that here was a bright knock of 31 from Jack Lockwood. The hosts had no problem knocking off the runs and won in the 24th over. Devon manager Jim Parker said: "This was a big test for the boys and we need to learn from the mistakes of too many poor shots at crucial times but there were some positives, notably Jack Lockwood who impressed with a good all-round performance. "

Result:

 Devon 93 (Wright 24, Lockwood 31).

 Hampshire 94-2.

Devon lost by eight wickets.

Devon Under 14’s Rue Missed Opportunities

It was a very frustrating trip to Southampton for the Devon Under 14’s. After driving over 3 hours through heavy rain they arrived at Trojans cricket club to find that a pitch had not been prepared and that they were not expecting a game to be played there. This meant that the pitch used the day before had to be used and as it had been left uncovered winning the toss would be vital. Hampshire won the toss and inserted Devon who struggled on the damp surface. After 23 overs Devon were 33-2.  Exeter’s Ben Green continued from where he left off the previous week and hit a very composed 73 not out in a final total of 149-5 off 45 overs. Plymouth’s Dan Goodey struck early and Bovey’s Ben Steer almost took a hat-trick but it was not enough as Hampshire managed to sneak home with four balls to spare with four wickets in hand.

Devon manager Jon Mears was left counting the small things that didn’t quite go Devon’s way. “We again bowled too many wides and didn’t take all of the half chances that came our way and we missed a few singles when we batted. However to push a good Hampshire side so close after we had the worst of the track and the worst of all the conditions bodes well for the rest of the season.”

Result

Devon 149- 5 off 45 overs ( Green 73* Pyle 20)

Hampshire 150-6 off 44.2 overs (Goodey 2-23, Steer 2-23)

Hampshire won by 4 wickets

 Week Ending 27th May 2012

Magnificent Medlock Destroys Dorset

A brilliant bowling display from Devon Under 10 opening bowler Luke Medlock from Paignton saw him take 6 wickets, including a hat-trick, to destroy the early Dorset Under 10 batting order. There was no let up from the other Devon bowlers either and Dorset collapsed to 25 all out off only 15.4 overs. Dorset had recovered from losing a wicket in the first over from Medlock to move onto 14-1 but in his 4th over he took two wickets. Next over Plymouth’s Alfie Hagan-Burt took the 4th wicket to fall but even worse was to follow for Dorset as Medlock took a hat-trick in his next over to send them tumbling to 16-7. The brilliant bowling was backed up by sharp fielding and brilliant wicket keeping from Kingsbridge’s Freddie Ford.  After 10 overs both opening bowlers were replaced by Devon’s two left arm spinners, Max Hancock (Sidmouth) and Will Oxland (Budleigh Salterton), who both enjoyed success.  Max Hancock took a wicket in his third over and Will Oxland finished the innings in the 16th over bagging two wickets.

Devon lost an early wicket but skipper Jack Moore (Barnstable) and Plympton’s Will Scott Munden had no problem knocking off the runs in only 3.4 overs with Moore finishing on 15 not out and Scott-Munden on 7 not out.

Ted Ashman has seen a lot of great performances in his many years as Devon Under 10 manager but cannot remember a more convincing win or a game to finish so quickly. “Luke was almost unplayable and we couldn’t have wished for a better performance to start our season,” said Ashman.

Result:

Dorset: 25 all out off 15.5 overs (Medlock 6-4)

Devon: 26-1 off 3.4

Green Stars in Under 14 Victory

Exeter’s Ben Green put in an all round match winning performance as the Devon Under 14’s got their season off to a convincing 8 wicket win against Gwent. Gwent scored 205- 5 off their 45 overs on a good pitch at Blundell’s school and Green had the best bowling figures of 3-39 off his eight overs. Going in at 93-2 Green put on a match winning stand of 116 with Bovey Tracey’s Ben Steer (43) to see Devon home with 14 balls to spare. A solid opening stand of 70 from skipper Toby Codd (33) and Dan Pyle (42) broke the back of the chase and Green’s weight of shot saw him increase the tempo nicely and saw him bring up his 50 off only 35 balls.

Manager Jon Mears said,” It was a very mature performance by the team, with Ben Green being particularly impressive  with the pace and accuracy of his bowling and his ability to punish the bad ball when batting. My only criticism would be that we bowled too many wides which is something the boys need to rectify.”
