A beautiful morning driving to Wales but as we approach the Bridge there is thick cload hanging along the Welsh coast and rain, including heavy showers and perhaps more forecast. Depending on the pitch perhaps a day to put the opposition in?
The warm up is a little lethargic, players seem tired, too much cricket? Toby wins the toss and puts Wales in. Unf
ortunately, even though Dan Goodey who has found his form, takes a vital wicket second over, Roberts LBW, there is definitely a sense of tiredness in Devon's body language and the bowling and fielding reflects it too; too many singles being taken and a sharp gulley catch goes begging, as Wales get off to the start Devon just do not want. Dan Wolf bowls the best he has this season but there is just not the penetration or luck for the bowlers to take the necessary wickets. A rain break brings the drinks break and it is not until the 20th over that Toby gets a break through Pearce caught at mid on by Dan Pyle. 77-2. Wales are still relatively untroubled and it takes an outstanding piece of fielding from Will Thompson to run out Thornton with a direct hit to get the 3rd wicket in the 28th over. 106-3. After another rain break, Wolfy then gets reward for his bowling when Jake Reddick taking a comfortable catch 144-4 in the 36th over and then it is Wolf's turn to hit the stumps direct from square on, brilliant, to run out Jones. 150-4 in the 38th. Wales have by now decided to up the anty and are taking singles almost at will and using the wide expanses of the Newport ground, something Devon did not defend very well. Dan Goodey cooly then runs out Mills but Wales end up 187-6 from their 45 overs. A decent total but one that is achieveable if Devon bat properly.
After lunch and in a positive frame of mine, Devon genuiunely felt they could chase the runs down, Codd and Pyle open. 8 off the first over and 6 the second and Devon are away. The third
over was a maiden and the scoring then starts to slow down a little as the Wales' openers finnd their length. In the 8th over with the score on 32 Dan Pyle, who has just had a life, prodes forward to a ball which kicks a little and is caught and bowled, think about the angle of your bat and using soft hands. Charlie Barriball given a chance to bat at 3, joins Codd but the introduction of the Wales' spinners slows the scoring rate and Codd tryng to force off the back foot is cuaght behind in the 14th over. 41-2. Ben Green looks untroubled once more and plays with the authority he has shown all season when in the 23rd over he tries to force to leg and is adjudged LBW. 64-3 off 23. By now, as only 23 runs have been scored in the last 9 overs, the run rate
has crept up and pressure has started to mount on the middle order. Try as hard as he could Ben Steer could not find any rhythm and he snicks off. 79-4 off 29! Barriball, 34, perishes next in the 37th over with the score on 109 trying to hit over the top. All the timeThompson is trying hard too but even though he clears the boundary ropes twice he eventually circumes to the large outfield and Wales field placings and is caught. 135-5 off 41. By now it really is a lost cause and the incoming batsmen are on a hiding to nothing. Jake Reddick and Dan Goodey are both run out taking suicidal runs for the cause and then Charlie FitzRoy is caught behind. Jamie Telford is last to go as Devon's innings comes to a sorry end 147 all out, desperately disappointing and something we must/ have to learn from - yes we discussed these things afterwards and have before but we now need to start doing them and not just talk about them!
A long journey home with plenty of time to reflect- I hope! Our thanks to the Wales' management, the umpires, groundsmen at Newport CC and their catering staff. Thank you also to parents and relatives for your support and to Wendy for scoring once more.
