Another early start for the trip to Paul to play Cornwall. The weather forecast which seemed to change every 4 hours or so was not looking great and it had rained hard over night and it rained on and off leaving Devon right down through the Glyn Valley. The journey was untroubled and the weather improved  however as we headed almost as far West as we could go - Lands End 5 miles!

On arrival we found the pitch very green and damp and with a very short boundary on one side. As the players arrived it became apparent that they felt they should bat given their recent run chase history - not what Nick or I would suggest!! Coddy won the toss and opted to bat. What happened next was partly the pitch but also a number of batsmen did get themselves out with disappointing technique and/or application. Dan Pyle was first to go playing at a ball he could have left; Ben Steer followed proding forward with hard hands, caught at silly mid off- he had just worn one for the cause; Dan Wolf committed harikari and was run out and it was 10-3 off 8 overs! Quickly the batting order was changed to let Toby and Jamie bat to try and steady the ship but it soon became 16-4 when Toby pushed forward with hard hands and was caught in the gulley. On a pitch that is two paced and the ball jumps/holds in the surface you have got to be very watchful and play with soft hands and not go hard at the ball guys. Jamie and Ben Green, who was once more adapting to the pitch and situation, then took the score onto 34 when in the 19th over Jamie was caught behind. Cornwall possibly then helped Devon by taking their medium pacers off and putting their spinners on because whilst getting turn they also served up enough bad balls for Devon to score off. Charles FitzRoy, who we had tried to protect, then also made it look relatively easy, playing each ball on its merit and with Green he put on what turned out to be the match winning partnership. Both Green and FitzRoy played some lovely shots before Fitz played one shot too many and was bowled for 26 but more importantly there had been that partnership of 60. Just when there was hope, disaster struck next ball when Charlie Barriball was bowled neck and crop, 94-7 off 30 overs and the next problem now could we bat out our overs? Will Thompson and Green however put on 34, Whoompy giving us some scarey moments on the way before he inevitably holed out with the score on 128. Green was surprisingly next to go for a determined and exceptional, given the pitch, 60, without any additonal to the score - again not what Devon needed. Jake Reddick and Dan Goodey, wanting to prove their worth however and both are capable of batting higher, set about a splendid little partnership taking Devon to 157, a score they should never have got, when in the 44th over Goodey was last out caught. Interestingly when Cornwall's medium pacers came back on the pitch started to mis behave again and so even though the pitch had dried out considerably there was hope if Devon bowled in the right areas and the right pace. Nick Watkin had been heard to say earlier when Devon where 34-5 if we get to 3 figures we will win and comments from the umpires suggested they though Devon might have enough too but was the nearby grave yard a very worrying omen?

After a splendid lunch, thank you Cornwall, and after a quick warm up and positive talk , let's be inspired by last night Olympics, it was into action. Steery and Goodey opened, although there was the quandry that Goodey might bowl too quickly for the pitch and there were no great alarm bells, yes the odd ball did mis behave, for Cornwall until Tregunna played back and onto his stumps. 18-1 off 7. Dan Wolf then came on and bowled well, 4 overs for 2 runs as pressure, dot balls, mounted on Cornwall. Dan Pyle then replaced Goodey, whose 5 overs had gone for 7 runs, and in his first over he bowled Skewes with a peach. 32-2 off 12 overs. Next over amongst the no balls and wides he then had a long hop brilliantly caight by Jake Reddick at backward square leg and it became 34-3- some luck. James was batting very sensibly and with Tom Dinnis they watchfully put on 16 before James had a rush of blood, Toby was bowling well though, and was stumped by Jamie Telford. Two balls later Whoompy took a catch off Toby and 50-4 became 50-5. Greener was not bowling his occasional off spin too well and how he got away with figures of 5 overs for 11 runs we will never know but the introduction of Jake Reddick was overdue as Devon felt it unlikely Cornwall would not bat as deep as Devon and so it proved to be the case as wickets then started to fall at regular intervals. Reddick got the next a reflect catch by Steer at silly mid off, then Coddy took another again caght Thompson; Reddick a second caught and bowled and then, due to the pressure, there was a suicidal run out. 74-9. Tom Dinnis who like Green had played though much of the carnage, then decide to try and win the match but once Devon mananged to get Lakeman on strike it was just a question of time and Goodey finished off proceedings, Cornwall all out 109, Devon winning by 48 runs- Devon had got out of Jail!

Our thanks to Cornwall and Paul CC, the umpires and the weather gods. Many thanks to the parents for yet another early start and journey. Back in Devon it had be throwing it down, there was flooding in South Devon and very little cricket had been played.
